They have been stabbed, had acid thrown at them and barred from public transport. This is now a reality for some Asian Americans bearing the brunt of increasing tensions between the United States and China.
The COVID-19 pandemic and US presidential race are creating the perfect storm, as experts warn the two countries could be heading towards a new Cold War.
As President Donald Trump blames China for the virus, two-thirds of surveyed Americans say they do not trust the country and Americans of Asian descent are increasingly being violently attacked.
101 East investigates what the battle of the superpowers means for Asian Americans.

The saddest part about all of this is the people being attacked most likely consider America their country. Some are born and raised there. Much like how Indigenous Australians left Africa long before the color differentiation and can thus not be considered descendants of Africans. Calling them descendants centers Chinese people rather than appreciating the uniqueness of the culture, traditions and achievements of Indigenous people themselves. This would be the equivalent of calling Jewish people the descendants of Arabs/Palestinians. Or other Latin people the descendants of Italians.

@@desmondclark3193 No state is fine the way it is. The old way of thinking doesn't solve todays problems. I live in California (and its not perfect) but neither is Texas and its important to remember that change needs to come. I'm not talking about making Texas a more democrat controlled state but we need more independent free thinkers across the country. This whole right vs left politics is what is destroying our country. The whole Make America Great again slogan was a big delusion thinking that we can backtrack in history until everyone looses their rights and is hated on because of the color of their skin or their sexual orientation. So no sir Texas is not fine the way it is.

There are things really wrong in the notorious things that keep happening in the USA. Perhaps it's bad when others out of fear froze when witnessing somebody is being beaten helplessly. However, the worse is when witnesses silently sympathize with the attacker by letting the attacker freely beat the victim.

This is why learning self-defence is even more important for Asians. We are perceived as being smaller and weaker and somehow racism only matters when it's directed towards Blacks. I've met many white people who downplay racism toward Asians. If you try to talk about your experiences you are instantly accused of 'playing the race card', usually by people who have little experience of being on the receiving end of racism. Well, our greatest weapons are our phones and cameras, once you show them the evidence let's see if they dare to say we're playing the race card. And white people aren't the only culprits. Black people are too but no one will talk about that since Black people must be seen as innocent victims all the time. So Asian people, make sure your kids learn self defence in case they are attacked by violent, hateful white or black people.

I am a Korean American and I think that the world should discuss the issue of colorism not just racism. We have to discuss showing respect for everyone, not just to the wealthy or well educated. I work at place where I see and assist many people and to be honest the most disrespectful people are my fellow Asian community members. I have never been shown any respect from my Asian community. It is very hard when someone feels like an outcast, not only from people from other races, but equally disheartening when it is perpetuated by your own race, culture, and ethnicity. Please show the unity and togetherness that we so very discuss here on the page.

My sister was sexually assaulted at a nightclub in Melbourne for being Asian. Right now she’s battling on whether or not to keep the child since abortion isn’t really a thing in our family. We are 7th generation catholic, our ancestors were one of the few soldiers who help fought the crusade as slaves. The Catholicism belief runs deep in our family, yet we are treated like outsiders. The world is wrong, everything is wrong. Changes are needed.

I have lived in Texas since 1978 and later moved to California. Racism is always there. My suggestion for Asian Americans is to live in a racist area (such as Texas) for a few years. It will help you learn how to deal with racism as you integrate into the American society. Learn how protect yourself as well find ways for you to cope with systemic racism. Even after your moved to a more racial tolerant area such as California, you still need the ability to detect racism and ways to deal with them. Don't think racism does not exist in California, people are just more polite about it.

@Mohith Kanna Gosh, so essentially you are saying that it's alright to be racist in the community and should not be taken seriously because it's coming from hooligans? as long as it's not coming from someone in a police uniform? Cases of racism against Asian isn't something new alright, it just not being spoken of or viewed in a serious manner because Asian is considered minority in the states, not spoken doesn't mean it did not exist or new and it had been on the rise. Bear in mind that all these Asian Americans too are paying their taxes and contributed to society in America. Regardless if it's coming from a police or not, racism is racism may it be Black or Asian, i never know that anti-racism only applicable / entitled only to Black. If the black can't protect themselve, let alone minorities.
