In the light of a full moon on the outskirts of Yangon, a group of people gather around a glittering shrine, chanting incantations.
They believe this ceremony will bring magical protection.
Across Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of people follow the teachings and practices of wizards thought to have supernatural powers.
They believe in the magic of the Buddhist occult to cure illness, tell fortunes and protect people from harm.
Buddhism and magic are uniquely linked in Myanmar, and many influential people follow these practices.
But with Myanmar once again under brutal military rule, some of these customs have been forced underground.
From candlelit rituals to magical potions, 101 East goes inside the mystical world of the weizza, Myanmar’s wizards.

It's not a surprise that Burma for centuries is a land deeply rooted in mysticism. In my language, we used to call it the "Kâwl puithiam" or "Burmese priests". they are specialized in magic, casting spells and lifting curses from people. It is dangerous to anger the Kâwl puithiam because a great curse could befell upon the offender.

The hanging of women's clothing is not for the protesters. The protesters are not that superstitious. They are using the fear of Burmese soldiers not wanting to go under women's clothing as they are too superstitious and believe they might lose their luck or good faith as soon as they cross the hanging. Most young people in Burma think that treating women's clothing as unauspicious things is sexist.

Majority of the buddhist monks in Myanmar don't practice magic in Myanmar. They are more of a minority. I have stayed in monastery for over 2 months and in fact Buddha discourage these practices.

En slecht is het waarvoor zij hun zielen (aan de duivel) verkochten. Hadden zij het maar geweten. Al-Baqarah, Ayah 102

The reason you don't throw your Islamic beliefs and rituals into the garbage bin of "superstitions" and "stupidity" is because those beliefs and practices were normalized throughout your process of socialization. If you were born into a polytheistic society, you would see polytheism as normal and submitting oneself as a slave to a former Arabian moon god transformed into a Semitic god tyrant by a mad illiterate warlord as quite repulsive.

Nothing was "normalized": a religion exists because it is true. Take for example, the Shia sects that all along the centuries have never managed to grow within the Islamic sphere; to this day they stand at 10%. They were fake in years after the Prophet, they still are fake. And if I were born into polytheism, as you wrongly suggest, I would rationally (i.e., use my God-given brain) inquire about the wisdom of worshipping monkeys, or bathing in the disgusting Ganges River, as they do in Hinduism, or doing some mind-boggling charlatan magic as with Buddhism in Burma. As for the rest of your drivel, I get back to my initial point: do yourself a favor, open books, educate yourself.

@@farid7838 Your argument is that Shia is not legitimate because of its number of adherents. You do realize that Islam and all other majority religions were once minority religions, don't you? And, by your logic, if numbers determine the legitimacy of a religion, then Christianity would be the most legitimate (or least fake, in your words). Secondly, humans are products of their social surroundings. If you were born in a different culture with different beliefs and practices, you wouldn't know any different. You assume that your current knowledge, cultural identity, and interpretation of reality would somehow still exist if you were born into another social context. Your ethnocentric perspective is clear. I suggest you inquire outside of your biases and evaluate religions and cultures on their own terms, instead of injecting your learned bigotries upon them.
