I was in the US Marine Corps. Nobody used a Kabar other than guys who didn't know any better. Most guys used a CRKT folding knife, because it was the best pocket knife you could buy in the store on base. Personally, I deployed to Afghanistan with an old style Grayman Pemburu, the one with double bevel convex grind. It was perfect for my needs on that trip, and it took more abuse that I can possibly describe (partly because I didn't know better back then). See? It's hard to say "this knife is good for military," because the vast majority of guys in the field have no clue how to use a knife or what it can do for them. They just end up abusing them as pry bars and scrapers, and many even think that's what I military knife is supposed to be. So honestly, the best knife for most military guys is something cheap and tough. Seriously, most military guys don't even know how to sharpen a knife. Almost nobody even takes a knife sharpening tool with them to combat, because they don't know how to use it. For those that do know how, any good harder use bushcraft or non-gimmick survival knife would do just fine as a military knife. A good multi-tool will have far more use though.
@farstrider79 Жыл бұрын
Nobody seems to know how to sharpen a knife anymore. They think they need a "sharpening system" Or they think they have to ship it back to the manufacturer to have it sharpened.
@inspired4more Жыл бұрын
I'd argue to the contrary regarding knife knowledge among the average marine, at least from my experience. But you are right that the majority are well served with a simple pocket knife or Muliitool. Mostly because that's what you have on you most of the time. I don't know anyone who walked around with a bayonet on the hip. It stayed on the gear rig or in the gear bag. That's an issued item, and you pay well more than it's worth to replace if you break it.
@WheelchairGunfighter Жыл бұрын
Realize, I'm not talking about guys with experience. Most field Marines have maybe had one deployment if any at all. They don't know what they need or what a knife can do for them, because they don't have much in the way of field-craft skills. A knife is for opening MREs 90% of the time. They just don't know that scraping carbon off a barrel with the edge of your knife is bad. They don't know that using a knife blade as a pry-bar to wedge open a stuck ammo can is bad. They think that's what a "good" knife is for. And, if they take a "sharpener," it's one of those V-notch drag-through sharpeners that wreck your knife. I took a kit of DMT diamond stones that I had assembled for my needs to Afghanistan, and I ended up sharpening everybody's knives because they noticed their knives got worse when they used the drag-through types. I'm just offering observations. I'm not an expert, and I especially wasn't at the time, but I knew what I was doing to a degree. But, it's a fact that I used my ultra-course stone more than anything else, because every day I had to re-profile a knife. Guys would break tips of knives every day from prying with their knives or even using them as hammers. If there is anything I could contribute to the USMC infantry, it would be a week long course of basic, basic field-craft and knife use, not even bushcraft or survival stuff, just how to use basic tools like axes, shovels, and knives and how to make a good camp site.

@WheelchairGunfighter Жыл бұрын
@@IndianOutlaw1870 well, in an ideal world. But, military guys are already loaded down with kit. They carry a wreck-your-body degree of weight as it is. Maybe back at base, sure. But, most guys already have some kind of pliers-based multi-tool that has a knife blade. That's sufficient for cutting cord, tape, and food packaging. So, the real question is about the larger do-most-things fixed blade for outside the wire.

I use both while I was in the Natl. Guard. I was good either way, but I gravitated to the Ka-Bar. I was in a field hospital and used the knives for just about everything to include driving small tent stakes and digging small rain trenches around my individual tent. The steel butt on the Ka-Bar meant I could hammer with it for small projects without going to find a hammer or e-tool. The sawback on the Glock was an advantage on digging around roots and notching small limbs. If one were to modify the butt of the Glock with a steel bolt, it would probably win out.

In the Army, there is no issue knife typically (sometimes the M9 Bayonet). We got "issued" from the RFI or Rapid Fielding Initiative, or civilian items purchased off the commercial market like tools, sunglasses, goggles, etc. So, many units picked things they decided were appropriate for their needs. We saw A LOT of multi-tools like Gerbers and Leathermen, and Gerber knives in various forms. We were also allowed to carry personal knives so it was the soldiers' choice at that point. I’ve been telling you guys to do the Glock knife for over a year and finally you’re doing it in two videos in a row excellent. I personally think the Glock knife really is the perfect military field knife because it’s cheap enough to replace extremely durable big enough to fight with light weight an added benefit is unless you’re familiar with the knife people don’t know how to take it from the sheath so people can’t steal it from you and stab you.

Having used the glock knife, it's not the best (like soft steel) knife. But you also shouldn't look at it as a knife, but as a pry bar with an edge that's good at stabbing. Because that's what it was built for.
@Ve-suvius7 ай бұрын
Yeah, I've had many Glock knives. Most of them have very soft steel. And the tip test in the video, don't know, I've done it many times, and it bends extremely easy. And then when bending it back, not perfectly, you have an s shape in the tip. I value the tip higher in the Ka-bar having tested those also.
@Ve-suvius7 ай бұрын
I also had a few glock knives that I even couldn't get an edge on. Those were in the minority. Still not a fan of the glock knife. It's overrated. When stabbing hammer grip the hand slides forwards. I freaking love this design as long as the knife is strong enough and the grind is right. This is where I take issue with Cold Steel’s design, bc they have inexplicably decided to use a hollow grind instead of a proper sabre grind, or even a flat, which is what they used to do on the Leatherneck SF. Also, to both Kabar and Cold Steel: incorporate a freaking lanyard hole at the bottom of your handles! Seriously! Make the strong leatherneck thickness tang design with a proper saber grind and lanyard hole, and you guys will watch your sale of this design go through the roof!

I also carried an M7 that I had cut the barrel ring off of for my field knife. When I was in the (US) army (late 90s to early 00s) they could still be had in a surplus store for around $10. They are fairly stoutly built though I doubt the steel is anything special. I would love to see you guys do a review of one. We were issued the M9 bayonet for the Bosnia deployment but they made us turn them in to the armorer after a few weeks because too many guys (who had apparently never handled a knife before) were playing with them and cutting themselves. Almost everyone also carried a Leatherman or a Gerber multi-tool. I made a little side money sharpening knives for guys in my unit and just from my observations the Leatherman tended to hold up a bit better in the field. We encountered the Russian army there as well and one of the guys in my unit traded one leatherman for an entire Russian uniform, fur hat, boots and all. I was sharing a camp with the Swedes for a time and they all had basic Moras as a utility knife. Also, their (the Swedes) guidon (unit flag) , instead of being a two-section pole with a bit of vaguely spearhead shaped gilded pot-metal at the end, was an actual ash spear with an actual steel spearhead that just happened to have a flag tied to it.

I am a marine and I never saw the K-Bar in use. It was only a decorative piece. If you could aquire a WWII K-Bar I would be interested in those results. In training we had a M-7 banette but we were never issued one.

I'm pretty sure the Kabar USMC has not been issued in the US military for a long time now. As much as I like it for it's history, I know it's not the toughest knife for abuse with it's thin tang.

I had a Ka-bar and it broke while batoning in the weak spot, blade went flying. Thankfully Ka-bar is fair about their warranty, after 2 weeks i got a new one.Bacz when i bought it the leather model was around 80-90€, a reasonable price. Now it’s nowhere near a good deal.

Are we talking Utility knife or fighting knife ? Major difference here. I have NEVER been able to get an edge on a Glock that I would deliberately take to a fight. That said, A MODERN 1219C2 is the same. My main fighter is/was made by Camillus. My actual Ka-Bar is retired. It did it's job and brought me home. But it has a story that gives it sentiment. Suffice it to say that it was ISSUED to me by my MOTHER before the BEIRUT, LEBANON conflict in 1983. The blade still has blood stains , some mine, some not. Thus it's retired status. I then acquired an older Camillus that has been within arms reach of me every since. The newer KA-bars simply would not take an edge that met my standards. A utility knife and a combat knife are difficult to get into one blade.

In 2011 I was in Afghanistan and carried the same glock knife. The reason I carried it was a family member who was in Vietnam had to use a knife in a few fights and he found that having a a thin blade that can fit between ribs easily and not get stuck in bone is best. This is the main reason I chose to carry the glock knife, that and that handle and blade would be very low maintenance and I could just wash it with water bottle after being in a turret all day or on patrol/climbing mountains and stuff

US Army rarely issues knives. But when they do its typically the M9 Bayonette. We generally buy our own knives to use, my preferred is the Benchmade Nimvarous
@josephnoll2754 Жыл бұрын
In the army, we used bayonets unless personal purched- I used a SOG Seal Pup and a Leatherman. Folding knife, I used an issued benchmade Griptilian or personal bought Spyderco bill, none serated H1. The salt series held up better in tropical climates. Many soldiers bought ESEE knives after SERE. I like Mora knives for bushcraft. I own k-bar quartermaster, Glock 78, spanish muela etc.

I think the Marines should replace the Kabar with the Cold Steel Leatherneck because it's more similar with a much thicker tang.

Cold Steel SRK is another worthy choice. Nice video.

Let's be honest, the main reason to buy the Kabar is because it looks like the sexiest knife ever produced. I have one and what I like about it, is it fits and feels great in the hand, nice and balanced and I think it works really well for chopping wood because of it's length and it has a bit of weight behind it. Also I really like the notch at the end of the handle. You can use it as a hammer. It might not be the strongest knife in the world but if you don't mistreat and abuse it, it will last forever.

One of the most dangerous things to soldiers in every army of every country is boredom. So as long as you pick your nose then scratch your ass in that order you are fine. However, doing it the other way around could leave you with a nasty smell in your nose. 😵

Outside of extremely specialized units in very rare and specific circumstances the U.S. military pretty much uses multi tools and folding blades. I was never issued a bayonet but I used my Gerber almost daily. So much so multiple tools broke and I replaced it with a much more capable Leatherman. Large fixed fighting or survival blades were at best novelty items for a few guys.

I used to carry an original straight back Gerber BFM. What I knew about knives at the time was enough to be dangerous. Wasn’t exactly good for fine work, but chopped wood well and the point didn’t break off instead. Still, I should have bought the Randall #1 next to it on the shelf that afternoon an Ranger Joe’s in Columbus. I have been tempted several times to buy a Glock knife but had heard it was hard to sharpen. Also I haven’t seen one without the saw teeth for a very long time. I have a Camillus K-Bar copy that has been decent for what it is.

The KA-Bar is about 2-1/2 times (on Amazon) but that is because of the "Brand" and the leather handgrip is a little more expensive to make. It has been a long time since it was an official military knife. The design is a quickly mass producible one that could do a lot of things but not the best at anyone thing. There were so many made during WWII that they military had stockpiles of the knives that lasted for over 20 years. - The correct modern comparison is the OKC-3S.

Fun video. Lots of energy! Very entertaining. I was in the Army 2002-06. I wasn't issued anything but the M9 bayonet. We all bought our own knives. Isn't that Ka-bar more of a fighting knife than a field knife?
@nirfz2 жыл бұрын
Well, the FM78 is too, just look at its geometry. Thing is, anything sounding as martial as fighting knife would not go well with the german speakers since WW2. At least here in Austria we would probably not have even got one if it would have been called fighting knife. And so it is called field knife... For most of us the main use was tightening and loosening of the blank fire adapter. The adapter is screwed into the muzzlepiece of the rifle and has a slot in which the back of the blade fits. And the handguard of the knife also is shaped for it to be easy.
@Sanchito2092 жыл бұрын
When I was in the Corps the kabar was more of an icon seen at ceremonies promotions and retirements. Nobody really used one. At the time Gerber one handed multi tools and your average pocket knife was used. Of course we all had bayonets but mine never got used. Others may have had a different experience.

There is no real knife culture in the USA like there is in some other countries. It would be good if public schools replaced useless ballgames with martial arts for the athletic programs as students get rigorous physical fitness training and gain useful skills for the world as adults.

It would be nice to see a comparison of these 2 knifes doing what they are meant to do. Slashing and stabbing flesh in a fight. That is the only "test" that means anything. Based on the KA-BAR blade being wider, I would assume it would be more lethal.

i own a glock 78 and after A LOT of hardwood processing, stil no rattle. it's a legit beast, absolute vfm ! my only complain is that it's difficult to sharpen properly and have a razor edge..
@asz33372 жыл бұрын
When I was in the Austrian army we were actually forbidden to sharpen them. Probably because everyone who DID try ended up grinding half the knife away trying to get a proper edge on the bloody thing... 🤣 I occasionally pull mine through an any sharp, a little work on a 400 stone and (at least forme) that's easily sharp enough to accompany me the next few sorties through the woods. I did successfully sharpen it with a flat river stone too several times though. Not razor sharp but certainly good enough.
