A few years ago, my wife was selected as "Teacher of the Year" for her grade (8th) at one of the middle schools here in South Bend, IN. As a teacher in rural Knox, IN, she got her advanced classes to perform TWO Shakespeare plays on a beautiful stage that had never been used for a play in 60 years! Half the town showed up to watch. She also got students at an "inner city" school to do a play. My point?... She's a great teacher! Last year, she had been pushed to her limit... by students, parents, and administrators... and she walked out of the classroom. Whatever you hear about how bad teaching is... It's worse.

@Edgy-s1j The problem I see with this type of thinking is the blindness to the reality of bias. Bias is in every word you, me, or anyone says. What schools do teach is navigating bias, by utilizing critical thinking and exposure to many different points of view, aka bias. It' better to embrace bias than make yourself blind to avoid it, because who then is more vulnerable? So when you say that teaching is flaw because of bias, I wonder what it is you actually expect?

Here's a fun fact: I taught Art and Music in a Catholic Jr/Sr high school for 7 years, until the school closed down in 1992. My salary had topped off at 11,000 dollars /year. The total budget for art supplies for the the entire year for 100 students was 500 dollars, yes, $5 / child. And of course, that wasn't enough, so guess who took up the financial slack with his meager earnings, whenever the need arose... When the school closed, no retirement benefits. But to this day, my former students still remember the lessons they learned and have continued to appreciate and participate in the arts.

As a therapist who formerly worked at a college clinic AND was a teacher at that same college before that, the line about your future medical care being illiterate in both the general sense and math is spot on. The subject I taught was one that involved a minimal math component, yet converting inches to feet and miles was one of the things that tripped students up the most. As a therapist, most of the nursing students I worked with came for counseling due to high levels of stress related to struggling with math classes that would affect their ability to progress in the program. They'd muscle through and squeak by, but it demonstrates how today's struggling students are tomorrow's caregivers that all of us will depend on as we age regardless of whether or not we have kids. One reason I left public school to apply my two graduate degrees in higher academia was because I saw how the focus on standardized testing was reducing public education to turning kids into test-taking automatons, not future adults with critical thinking skills. The dumbification of successive generations was set in motion by Reagan, carried along by the Bushes, and may now make a giant leap with Trump. And the commenters that say US politics are looking more like reality TV are right. So many people look to reality TV as the model for how life should be now - complete with BS drama. It's hard to say if this pairing between entertainment and reality is by design or the byproduct of the toxic sludge that is reality TV. 🤷♀

When I did so, I reached out to a few schools for degree programs in New York state. I haven't followed through on that "calling" just yet, though I still may. But usually when you contact a university about degrees, it's the usual copy-paste brochures. I actually got a reply back directly from a professor, recommending a Master's degree in Computer Science education (I have a Game Design degree), how to get certified to teach in various states, etc. I was shocked at the personal...desperation in the email, the education crisis in America is no joke. The professor was also realistic about it, telling me about his time at a high school teacher and "honestly horrific lack of support from the government and administrators." To be clear: The email was fully professional, but the wording was telling...teachers at all levels are struggling badly and the stress and lack of new teachers is weighing on them. Not to mention it's their life's work and they see it crumbling around them.

I’m a high school teacher. I’m sorry the schools haven’t set you up for success. The hands of the teachers are tied in this by the principals and district people. There’s a lot to this about why this is, but I’ll tell you that there are so many rules on what teachers can do that it makes it impossible for us to teach anyone like yourself, and give you the knowledge base you need for law school. We are being forced to pass kids that can’t read instead. I actually risk my job sometimes by teaching kids in ways I know actually work, because they want me to use methods that have questionable research backing them. My students love my class because they learn things, but most teachers are more timid than I am. I’m not justifying it or passing the buck, but it’s bigger than your school and your district. It’s like this everywhere. I really wish you luck. If you’re smart enough to get what’s going on, you’ll be fine in law school. You’ve got an active mind! Always do your best and you’ll do well. I promise.

Depends on where you are and the income of your district. Teacher here (who used to teach HS students who wanted to go to law school): I've been trying to prepare my students for those types of fields for years and what I hear is: trade school, chat GPT, "why am I learning this?". I teach social studies, which includes civics, government, etc. They don't see the point when they're young, no matter how much you try to engage with various lessons- and that's because there's no basis because we treat history like the least important subject in grade school. So it's catch-up in middle school and in high school. Then, you get to high school, and you fall behind on it. I'm sure you already realize that most of law is critical thinking and history. It's also a thorough understanding of the Constitution and the government. I'm hoping you have a government class to at least cover that part. But again, it depends on the school and requirements. Also, please don't judge my grammar. There's a reason I teach history and not English, haha. Also, not trying to talk down to you in any way. I'm just venting teacher frustration and I hope you understand. I can give you a few resources if you are interested in filling the gaps. I had a couple of students who chose law school while preparing for high school- but the truth is, you need that B.A. or B.S. before you get there, which is going to require all the other skills you're learning now.

My old school was a non-public option funded by the state and city. I will tell you, it was not great. My middle school years were pretty bad; they didn't listen to me when I told them that some of the male students were acting out and bullying me, which led to bullying and calling me a snitch and other things no physical harm was done so I don't think they could do anything about it. It went so far that a student had a straight-up mental breakdown. That kid did come back, but I don't think he got the care he needed. At my kids' school the teachers are completely out of their element and they never bother hiring people with experience in dealing with autism, mental illness and other challenges. Because of the low wages, districts are hiring the cheapest they can find, so of course the kids are suffering. During COVID I was in high school and severely depressed with zoom only classes. I couldn't get the support I needed and bombed all of my classes that entire year. Even with almost all A's every other year, I still had a GPA of about 3.2 going into college and the consequences of dealing with a pandemic at age 15 are now permanently affecting me for the rest of my life. Damn, it sucks.

Most kids who were in HS during the pandemic needed to start at the lower end of freshman classes, which is better afforded at the community college level. If you are still struggling with depression, which is a disability after experiencing it chronically after two years, you could be eligible for vocational rehabilitation services. Voc Rehab services may help pay for educational or vocational training leading to competitive employment, that a Pell grant, other grants and scholarships don't cover, including fees, books, parking or transportation, and possibly housing. You can Google Vocational Rehabilitation Services to find an office near you in your state.

My dad and stepmom have a 6yo who’s in first grade and a 5yo who’s in his last year of prek. My dad and stepmom decided to homeschool both of them starting in kindergarten. They did it because “they lean more conservative, and they worried that the kids would get a more liberal education at public school, so they decided to homeschool them”. I’m sorry, but wtf

One story from when I was teaching math and business in a small rural school: I had a class of 7th grade students who would just NOT behave, listen, or do anything asked of them. So I went to the principal (my direct supervisor) and asked her if she could help or provide resources to help me. The next day, she came into the classroom and yelled at them. It worked for that day, but the next day, back to "normal." I asked her if there was more we could do, if she could provide resources to help (such as a paraprofessional to sit in to help me keep them under control, calm, and focused), but she said there wasn't more she could do. So I tried a few more weeks with some success, but still not enough to make me feel like it could continue that way. I again asked for help, but got none. So I sent an email to the parents of the students, asking if they could talk with their children about the importance of paying attention, staying calm and under control, and listening to me. I told them that the administration of the school only has so many resources and that they can't help with this situation. It worked SO well! They were quiet, calm, under control, and paying attention. A big win! ...or so I thought. The principal was LIVID with me for pointing out to parents her inability to help. She went after me SO hard. She mocked and ridiculed me for having absences due to being chronically ill (flaring ulcerative colitis, made worse by the students' behaviors), b*tched at me for my online lesson plans being "inadequate" because they "contained too little information about the lessons," and sent people to watch me teach at least once a week, to report back to her. She often accompanied them. I adjusted the online lesson plans to include more information within 3 days of her b*tching at me about them. The next week, I'm called into the board room to speak with principal and superintendent. Again, I'm being attacked for my absences (due to flaring u.c. as a reminder) and my online lesson plans. She demands I follow the methodology the school uses for lesson planning. I agree to adjust to fit the schools methods, leaving the room p*ssed and feeling horribly demeaned. I checked the methodology, lo and behold, I not only met it, I exceeded it. I checked the online lesson plans of other teachers - MANY of them posted ALMOST NOTHING for their plans, but they didn't get harassed at all about it. Things continued this way for a couple months; I finally packed up my belongings and kept teaching. One day, I after writing lesson plans that were SO FAR BEYOND what was in the schools methodology, I got an email, stating I would be meeting with another teacher about writing online lesson plans. The next day, after school, he comes to my classroom, I open my laptop and show him my lesson plans. He looks at them, looks at me confused, and asks "why is there so much?" I tell him that I kept getting told I needed to include more info, so that's what I did. He tells me that the approach I should have is "K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple, Stupid." He then asks me if he could read the email I sent to parents as he had heard about it before but never got to read it. I show it to him and he looks concerned, then tells me to remember K.I.S.S. and to keep going strong. I worked about another month, which included continued harassment, and then the combination of being sicker than before despite treatment and the stress of having my supervisor harassing me for an email made me miss a day of class. Then another. And another. One more. Then one more. And another -- until 2 weeks had passed with me missing class. Then I sent an email with my resignation. Superintendent was concerned about me - I gave her documentation of the harassment but she did jack sh*t about it so I didn't GAF about what she thought. Oh, one more story - same school. I had a test scheduled and all ready for students to take on a Wednesday. I missed work that day (same reasons), and I sent an email to the substitute on what to do to administer the test. The next day, I come back to work and start grading the tests. They all did SUPER well; I was impressed! But then I started to notice they all made the same mistakes with the same wrong answer. I continued, more evidence of chesting presented itself. I set them aside and decided I would make a re-test to administer to them. I confronted them when their class period came, asking anyone who cheated to raise their hands and to be honest. Nobody raised their hands. I told them they would have to re-take a test for the lessons we covered and one student said "we didn't cheat! (Sub's name) helped us find the answers on the whiteboard as a class and we wrote them down!" I was p*ssed - I specifically told the guy NO HELPING the students! I reaffirmed they would need to redo the test. They RIOTED. Some left the class to tell the principal, some tried to intimidate me physically, some were running around the classroom screaming, some cried, and some just sat in their desks reading or drawing. I sat down after telling them all that I would be waiting for them to stop. A few minutes later, principal showed up and asked wnat's going on. I told her, and she told me to reconsider a new test. I told her I already made the new test and that what happened is cheating IMO. She and I received angry emails from parents; I responded, telling them what happened, and they understood. But principal was p*ssed from them and told me to axe the new test. Made it very clear it was not to happen and to gice the students [A]s So I had to move on with all of them getting [A] grades. 🙃🙃🙃

I taught high school for 12 years in SoCal, five of those in LAUSD. There are two problems that Leeja did not touch on that I saw crippling the public education system. The first, at the elementary and middle school level, was the unintended lesson that was taught to every student: there are no consequences for failure. I had freshmen that failed my Algebra 1 class who were shocked, even stunned, to find out they were not taking Geometry the next year. They had been passed along, for their entire academic lives, and did not understand why they were not just automatically sophomores when they returned the following year. They would argue if there are no standards before 9th grade, why should there be standards in high school? The second issue is at the secondary level. After years and years of telling students that everyone should go to college, we have raised the college graduation rate in this country all the way to...(drum roll)...38%. Yet, almost every high school teaches every single student a college prep curriculum. Therefore at least half of my students were being prepared for a college degree that they would never achieve and may never have wanted in the first place. So what happens to that 50%? A large portion end up hating school, not coming to class, being disruptive and disrespectful when they do, and often dropping out because the system no longer caters to their needs. Now that I teach at the college level, I see the results of these problems combined to create students who are not prepared, do not know how to read, do math, or study. My school has a 54% graduation rate, which means that almost half the students who start there never earn a degree, but they do get a parting gift of sky high student loans, since those don't go away just because you didn't graduate. Public education is a public good. We all pay for it and we all reap the benefits. And right now, we are getting what we pay for...

10th grader here who just happens to be more progressive and smarter (surprisingly) then a lot of my classmates. The pandemic screwed us ALL over. Half of my classmates make a whole 3 minutes to read a small sentence, most of them ask questions that were literally just answered a second before, and my teachers are so tired. The teachers are making loopholes so less kids fail even though they really don't deserve to pass, most kids are failing 70 and below. I can admit I don't have the best grades but at least I can do basic skills like reading, writing, and counting, y'know, basic stuff a sophomore should know by kindergarten. For the past 5 years I've been relentlessly bullied just for being trans. Despite how unskillful these people are they are SO nasty. Alongside the bullying, it's been sexual harassment too. I swear someone needs to get it into the people my age's heads that being nasty for LITERALLY NO REASON has never been okay. Also, the whole AI stuff has made me worried because 1. I like to write for fun so I am pretty good + I use grammarly to help so my writing is better 2. this year I've had to explain to my history teacher that no, I didn't use AI on and essay and am very against AI unlike my classmates who's brains have genuinely rotted so much that they use Chatgpt on literally any writing assignment. Sorry for rambling just kids my age make me really upset with how lacking in basic skills they can be.

You're a smart person, and while I'm sure the situation is dire (I mean, you described it as such, I trust you), I'm confident you can find your niche and crew of like-minded people, and I can tell you from experience that it makes a big difference to the psyche. Unfortunately it sounds like you have another 2.5 years of this nonsense, but I really hope you can find yourself in a place soon where you have at least a handful of other sharp individuals to grow with. As someone almost exactly twice your age, I rarely ever think at all about the non-thinkers and bullies from that time in my life, and I hope you can power through this! Everyone's case is different of course, and you should definitely prioritize your safety given your gender identity, but I also hope that some sort of school club or such can connect you with others, and if you do go to college you'll absolutely be around people who (mostly) have passed the "filter". Good luck and stay safe!

I am now 31 years old and still remember this many years later. For some reason this was always on the back of my mind and gave me so much anxiety in school and life. Point being, teachers are very influential in the lives of students.

It's really strange thinking I may be one of the few of my generation that was able to read at an adult level by 2nd grade; i won an award for it in my school and it got the attention of the state superintendent to boot. I had no idea just why it was such a big deal to them until recently. Hardly anyone I knew growing up read books like I do; I mean I read the damn dictionary cover to cover in 4th grade. I was a total nut for literature and it made my elementary school get a nice little equalizer for all the kids who weren't scoring well for literacy exams. I've since fallen out of reading as much as I did then but I got a really solid grasp on the English language way faster than other kids and could speak fluently and with confidence to my teachers with rich grammar and expansive explanations of my thought processes for my other school work. I was a bit of a favorite but that soon soon changed once I got to middle school, I ended up getting bullied pretty bad and started attending less and less and soon my grades went from flawless to atrocious and instead of getting help I was punished by being put in a behavioral school for 4 years instead of high-school. The education system is horribly flawed, but it's existence still made me who I am and I would not want to be anyone else but me even after everything I went through. Gutting it even more will just make things worse not better; the teachers I had growing up were practically the reason I attended and without them I would not of become so driven to learn about things the way I do.

I definitely resonate with this. I didn't read like you did but I was probably at an 11th-12th grade reading level by 8 years old and pretty much stopped once I reached middle school. The school system was pretty painful to me despite loving to learn on my own terms but the few good teachers really made it bearable. Even then I knew teachers were underpaid, overworked, and abused, so I always tried to be nice even to the ones I didn't like.

As a 17 year old in high school, oh my god you hit it right on the head. I live in New Zealand, where things are objectively much better than America, but god this is all so relevant here. On top of all of this, no one actually stops to ask the kids - I have never been able to have a say in the systems that I can visibly see crumbling around me, no one asks why we're skipping school more, no one is asking why achievement levels are dropping, everyone is just yelling over us and making everything worse

People really haven't put two and two together regarding the factors that make school pointless and student absenteeism and behaviour. Of course they're going to treat it like the joke it is when they're forced to go to a potentially dangerous place that doesn't teach them anything but bangs on about a future that's unattainable for a vast majority of them through no fault of their own. If this institution doesn't respect them, why should they respect it? People need to look past the fact that students don't kowtow and address why they don't, but nobody's ready for that conversation because their egos are far too fragile.

I'm a high schooler at the moment, myself (Junior Year), and the only reason I pay attention in most of my classes anymore is because I find it interesting. It sounds nice, and I want to know some more. Having this ability has apparently made me the "smart one" among my peers. Hearing that phrase over and over, and then getting it seemingly confirmed with your grades feels good. It can also make you suffer if you're meeting expectations on what the average student should make that leaves your ego prepared to be fully deconstructed when you're face-to-face with an actual smart kid. The kids are, in fact, not alright.

We intended it to be a temporary solution but with the way things are going, it gets harder and harder to hold onto hope.
