As a Canadian, I can tell you that although the tariffs are paid for by you guys, the increased price will affect sales for companies up here. We do 70% of our trade with you... if you raise the price of our products by 25%, your citizens will just buy a cheaper product... from China. This will affect many small businesses, and our GDP as a whole... we're already talking about it. But while we're at it... if Trump's complaining about drugs and illegals sneaking into your country, what about the guns, cocaine and fentinal making their way into Canada... through the US? The guns are from you guys, but the drugs make it into Canada... through the US. You guys let them in to begin with. Blame yourselves, not everyone else.

The part that no one is talking about is that if imported goods go up then so do home produced goods . Partly this will be due to increased cost of raw materials but also because home producers aren't going to keep their prices the same if the products they compete with go up . They'll just charge more to match the price .

You're right I've given this so much thought my brain never stops actually.. I wish everything could be made in the USA..... but if he was going to do that first you got to start making everything in the USA and it would take so many years to be independent from them..... they make our medicine in China.... here's an example I go to Walmart and I buy a cheap hand can opener it breaks the first time I use it... I buy another one it breaks the second time I used it.... I thought I wonder if anything's made in the USA and freaking Walmart and yes there was one and it still works and it'll keep working for the rest of my life... most of the time made in USA means quality..... you should see the video of elon's car going up against a Chevy...... yes it was somewhat bulletproof so big deal in the end it couldn't even do anything and the Chevy truck or whatever it was I think it was a Chevy drives over this giant thing of dirt and Elon lost and I think it must have been something because C4 will blow through it but in that video it did not they gave Trump a Tesla truck he likes musk but he hates electric cars give me a break
@allanmason32018 минут бұрын
You're right. And the mystical forces of capitalism (aka corporate greed) will also be a factor. Say some huge transnational company which relies on imported raw materials or components manages to stockpile years' worth of inputs by the time the import taxes hit. There's no way they're going to keep their prices low when they have a semi-valid excuse for gouging.

We (Canada) will just pivot to trade with Europe. Europe is starving for LNG and oil, as well as rare earth metals and lumber, all of which we have abundant amounts of. Do you think that the EU will want tariff-free trade for these things, as well as our innovations in green energy, as we make the global transition? Unfortunately, it is now evident to all Canadians that we need to diversify and ween ourself off of the easy "methadone" of US consumerism in favour of more reliable trade agreements. Canada has a VERY good reputation as a reliable, fair, and honest trade partner. Time for us to seek or bolster other opportunities based on that.

I am also Canadian, and I wish it were that simple. 70% of our trade is with the US. 2 million jobs directly or indirectly depend on that one market. We are the biggest trade partners of 17 states. We cannot “pivot” to Europe. Tax policy in Canada has to at least track American tax policy. That is why when their richest 1% own 33+% of national family wealth, our top 1% owns 26%. When their top 10% own 72%+ of family wealth, our top 20% owns 69%. Trump will end ACA. Doug Ford, Danielle Smith, Poilievre will end Medicare here. The advantages we have are an independent Supreme Court, pretty strict rules on federal and provincial campaign financing, 20 provinces who can never agree and a multiparty system. On the other hand, note that the party members nominating candidates are often “instant members” bused in. And they need not be citizens! Russia, Iran, China all have an interest in making Canada less governable. All of them pay surrogates here. All of them fund dissidents.

@faderen200015 минут бұрын
Yes, but saying tariff is just a tax on consumers is not correct. Most contries uses tariffs. Sometimes over 100% tariff. Reason is to protect domestic businesses. Specially within agriculture. Instead of tariffs you could give subsidies (better alternative) so domestic businesses can compete with the ones abroad. That way you could have a combination of both and the consumer gets more products to chose from/or like you said, get the product all year round. But it gets even more complicated when the country abroad subsides their export industry. Conclusion is that tariffs are a tool. Also not something you should impliment and remove frequently, because it makes it hard for businesses to plan ahead. Global trade dont like uncertainty. The video says tariffs cant stop drugs. Well, time will tell, but its a tool that might help, indirect, to motivate Mexico and Canada to do more to stop it. Lets say Mexico and Costa Rica export avocado to the USA. Without tariffs, Mexico have an advantage being closer (less transportation costs). Lets say Mexico gets a 25% tariff on the avocado, but the ones from Costa Rica was just 10% more expensive before. So now the import from Costa Rica goes up and less import from Mexico. Over time Mexican farmers might stop producing avocadoes, and produces something they can sall domestic instead (or something they can export to others). Its like playing poker, but history have showed that Trump dont bluff. The tariffs will happen, meaning Mexico and Canada might reconsider todays political actions. But its also a tool that might backfire and hurt the US. Only time will tell. Haveing a secure border, often comes with a prize. Less illegals = less cheap labor = higher prizes, so if Trump voters wanted cheaper stuff, they probably will be dissapointed. Only tiime will tell.

Canada is lumber and lumber products including toilet paper, paper towels and all forms of paper as well as raw materials. Canada is a major exporter of raw materials into the US, depending on how the tariff is written, and Canadian owned mining companies are everywhere internationally. I'd buy as much tp as you can store now. Mexico is so many goods it is hard to pinpoint where the worst pain will be. There are literally entire factory zones in northern Mexico that exist to do nothing but assemble products and export them into the US.

one part that everyone leaves out when explaining the tariffs is: the companies that import the stuff and pay the tarrifs will rais the prices for their costumers and if costumers then buy less because its more expensive the supplier might raise prices again because they are not selling enough of the stuff stop doing business altogether. if the importer goes to the supplier and tells them they will have to lower their prices to accomodate the difference in taxes the supplier will either refuse or will reduce the quality. my gf works as a product manager and has plenty of experience with china, if you ask them for a lower price they will give you the price without much of a discussion but they will reduce the quality of the goods to match the new price, for instance less thick pipes to save on the material..... so it's all even worse and more complicated that even the people who understand the concept think

The companies that have to pay the tariffs will NOT pass it onto the consumers because they are that patriotic and caring of their customers? No! The consumer pays, not the corporation, they pass the costs on.

I live on the border. I have seen the effects of policies that completely destroy the American cities and towns because Canadians stop crossing the border to shop. They can’t afford American prices, they want to support their communities and they do not like American policies. These cities and towns rely on Canadian shoppers. More boards will go up over doors and windows when American businesses go out of business and shut down. That is my experience of what I have seen happen over the years to border towns and cities.

You only have to look at the UK, who stopped immigrant workers and then there were no pickers for Farmers, and crops rotted in the fields because, Brit`s who were saying immigrants were taking their jobs, would and could not do the backbreaking job.

Not just farm workers - lorry drivers, hospitality workers, service workers, social carers. Brexit also raised trade barriers fucking up our export market especially for small and medium sized businesses, restricted our previous right to travel, work and live wherever we wanted in the EU and forced us to lower food and safety standards in a desperate bid to shore up the economy by signing to terrible trade deals. It's devastated our country. All because people were convinced that immigrants were invading the country and our European neighbors were taking advantage of us. Sound familiar?

you are assuming the goal is to keep the economy going well. Two things to consider... 1. Trump always does what is best for Russia, so a broken US economy would help them. 2. His billionaire friends will make billions if they short the market and he crashes it, they can then afford to buy when stocks are low and everyone is panic selling. Even if Trump crashes the market, it will recover, the only thing to be seen is who was lucky enough to buy when the stocks were low.
