America's Great Central City | Kansas City, MO

If driving west through Missouri until nothing further stands before you but the state border, you better hope that you find the exit on the interstate which directs you to the Show-Me State's largest city and fascinating cultural epicenter. Today we're diving right into the huge city vibrantly keeps the spirit of American culture alive, from its poetic location deep in the nation's geographic center. Kansas City is known by many names: the "Heart of America" and "Paris of the Plains" to name a couple. From its earliest days as a frontier outpost, the town of Kansas soon became the city of Kansas, and witnessed political tension, westward migration and wide-scale commerce as it grew into a regional behemoth of an urban area over the 1800's. Until I spent a day in this city, I didn't quite understand the wealth of attraction that still exists in modern KC. So may my pleasant surprise serve as testimony that this destination is a great example of a beautiful urban area with plenty to offer the tourist, from its universal friendliness and free public transportation, to local markets and classic barbecue joints, all despite being hidden away from the mainstream tourist track. Yes, there is in fact a Kansas City in Kansas just across the state line, but the center of all our action today lies within Missourian boundaries. Well, one last hurrah for Missouri before we continue onto the frontier and cross into new Coverage Project territory.
