Wow, this was one of the most insightful and touching pieces of journalism i have ever had an opportunity to witness. Thank you PBS and more importantly, thank you Frank Luntz. Frank Luntz is a BS Artist to the Nth degree!! Watch his 2nd FRONTLINE interview --he has a beard and weighs about 100 pounds less. Then, tell me that he cares about everyone, especially after hearing his last 2-3 minutes: Trump absolutely knew what he was doing by sending his followers to the Capitol, but we don't need to punish Trump and the other planners of J6. We should just move on and move forward. I say we cannot move forward until we have accountability!

@@classiqueliberal8576 I know right ... these interviews were so amazing. I've always been against Trump and Palin, disliked the Tea Party, but have a right wing disposition from a European point of view. These interviews finally made me understand the whole decade better (except that Schimdt one, typical left idpol) I see a method to the madness of this century now, why it happened, and why it's not as horrible as it's portrayed. I still have VERY strong criticisms of Trump and the GOP, but there are also issues that were finally being addressed for the first time in who knows how long. I don't think I'll ever support Trump, but I understand it all a bit better now. But then the whole eventual documentary was such a one sided selective shitshow again. Exactly the type of MSM bs these interviews speak to.

@@alphaomegastables ... This guy Is "A SNAKE". He Begins Seductively by luring you in: "Obama Inauguration, Beautiful Day, Washington DC had Never felt like this... Guy on crutches..." 1. Slight shift: Obama's failure to provide for homeowners, (my critique too, so shrug?). 2. Then WHILE FAILING to Acknowledge McConnell's Statement and Agenda "To Make Obama A One Term President" AND 3. McConnell's Determination TO: ▪︎REMAKE The Supreme Court Into A Conservative Majority ▪︎ And Limit Obama' Judicial Appointees ▪︎And To Protect McConnell's Large Campaign Donations from Big Insurance Companies; 4. THEN: In Goes the Shiv; Right between the Ribs. Obama was "Arrogant", Obama "Didn't know How To Play Nicely"; Obama "Didn't Use The Right Word" (WELL Now, 'McConnell' Knows What To Do With "Arrogant Black Men"). 5. So? Obama Took Out His Pen and Wrote "Executive Orders". And that CREATED "Trump"?!?!? How About Lee Atwater's 'Southern Strategy', Nixon's 'Silent Majority'; Bush And 'Willie Horton'????? The GOP hasn't had A New Idea In More Than 40 Year. Oh, don't neglect: Reagan and Philadelphia, Mississippi's: 'State's Rights Speech" (wink, wink) And Someone had the "Blue Collar Workers" Revolution; All While The Unions were Ravaged. The Results: Wages have been Stagnant For 40 Years. This is Exactly what Eisenhower warned against, relinquishing ALL the Gains for the Working Middle Class, made by Franklin D. Roosevelt, during the 1930's And 40's. The McConnell Controlled GOP Had NO INTENTION of EVER WORKING WITH Obama. NONE, ZIP, ZERO. IF You DOUBT That:"History IS Prologue" (ie.The PAST Can Tell The FUTURE). EXAMPLE: FROM Roosevelt in the 1940's UNTIL Bill Clinton in the 1990's, There had NOT Been A TWO TERM DEMOCRATIC President. AND Assuming KENT STAR had His Way; BILL CLINTON Would have been Removed From Office During his Second Term. This Attempt To Control Our Political Institutions and Legislation "Charade" (Directed By The 01% Percenters) has Been Going on in This Nation Since Before (Republican) Theodore Roosevelt And His "Trust Busting" Or FDR And General Butler (Google) BTW: Brett Kavanaugh, Mitch McDonnell's "UNHINGED" Appointee to The SCOTUS Worked On Clinton's Impeachment with Star. ALL Of This Is 'GOP Spin'. And is nothing more than Pure SPIN And NONSENSE. JUST More; Deflect, Distract And Disparage, Designed to Divert the Public's "EYES" From McConnell's Shaping Of "His Ideal" Picture Perfect "Conservative SUPREME COURT" (And 130 Federal Judicial Appointments). All Appointed To Protect The Deregulation And The Tax Breaks Gifted To Corporate And Wealthy Donors. The Average American Family Is Struggling To Pay Their Mortgage, or Rent, Medical and Child Care Cost And Educate Their Children. Example? THE Average CEO Earns 300 Times MORE Than the Average Wage Earner. Example: WORKERS Salary: $100,000.00 Annually. The CEO's Salary: $30,000,000.00 Million Dollars Annually. Civility, manners, consideration for the opinions of others, those are things we used to have but have largely disappeared. The reason for this is that in your youth America was still a white-dominated society. The Hispanic population as much smaller, America still saw itself as a Christian country. Now a massive amount of people descendant from Christian families now see themselves as atheists. In your day they were an insignificant minority. In short, it is these changes that caused the increasing lack of social cohesion that results in the loss of a sense of shared identity and community.

Because no matter how many crooks inundated the banks, the banks were needed, and the responsibility was put to everyone to fix it. Without the banks, this country would have failed, and I know there are some voices out there that wanted to see our country fail. There were some voices out there that wanted a “do over” and they thought by burning it all down, with the banks, and with Trump, that somehow something better would arise. That’s pure foolishness, as anarchy would have risen. Our country, with its flaws, but also with its adaptability, would have been gone. The ideal of it would have been gone, and the anarchists and dictators would have won.

What this gentleman is talking about is at the very root of all the issues facing all of us. It is the lack of proper, constructive, sincere, communication, lack of mutual respect, and a lack of personal and individual responsibility on all fronts. What he is talking about is a struggle that is not only here in the US, but is mirrored in all other countries of the world in some shape or form. Voices like this need to be heard and amplified. Example, your comment does not offer an opening to conversation. It is a statement- the other side is bad- DROP MIC. That is how we got Trump. That is why there was no "blue wave." The "other" side is still there and they are as American as you. Claiming victory or superiority, without attempt at understanding, at the expense of another will ALWAYS sustain and worsen division. This is definitely not balanced. If you understood this man’s background and the bidding he did for the Republican Party, you’d know this man is anything but balanced. For all his praising of Obama he immediately names a negative aspect of the compliment he just gave him and tries to label him (and to a greater extent the entire Democratic Party) completely out of touch. Meanwhile he gives all the praise to 45 and the one thing he says that is remotely critical of him was saying that “his greatest strength is his greatest weakness.” He makes it seem fair and honest, but that’s his job. As they say, it’s the gift of the silver tongue. One last thing to note, was his gloomy interpretation of where the country is heading. He claims the reason our democracy is going down the tube is because it’s everyone’s fault; politicians, the media, the journalists, the people. Not once does he single himself out for all the backwards progress we made in terms of climate change. You ever wonder why suddenly we went from calling it “Global Warming” to “Climate Change” and why we the common folk still even debate whether or not it’s a real thing? Look no further than this guy. He is the reason why enough people in our legislative branch, executive branch, the news organizations and the greater population in the US still are so polarized on the notion the earth’s temperature has been increasing for the past century as a result of man made activity. We are one of the few that still debate the science of it, and it’s all this guys fault. The man’s a shill and a sellout.

That's a little largely unknown snippet from the Pollsters. Who hasn't even bought one copy of the National Enquirer in their life ? Often drawn in by the madness of the Front covers, even if it's just for a piece of a self congratulatory assurance that you're not likely to believe anything inside. You did go inside, just this once you tell yourself. This could apply to millions, and these sales might form part of their Research. Trump used the research, gave it to Jared to work with and held Rallies in the places no one else did. , Clinton didn't do this kind of research and dismissed the thought. This is where the Electoral College Votes live. This is where Trump won. Trump has called his voters White Trash and has said that he supposed he was White Trash too. The only difference Trump added is , that he's got money. He's Rich, they're not .Politics is a dirty game.

@@illuddivinus3309 The key words here: "cold war", with the emphasis being on cold. The US and USSR never engaged in a direct war. Likewise, Americans will not actually go to war. It's a contest between the two ideologies, which will most likely not turn into a full scale civil war. Why? The same reason an actual war never happened between the US and USSR, that is, too many people have too much to lose. Eventually one ideology will prevail. Hence, "COLD civil war".

Fantastic interview and well expressed. I too feel like Frank Luntz, although a pollster who used to specialize in the Republican arena, has a great deal of insight for both sides and can both support and critique both sides very well. I ordinarily would feel a bit more hopeful than he about our future except that right now at least, he's right about social media. As long as there is nothing to stop anything and everything from getting out there as "fact" instead of at least being stamp marked as "editorial" and "opinion", we may be leading ourselves down the path to losing our status in the world. I do think from all this that having good character and civility actually makes a huge difference. What I've seen from the last two administrations is that having the loudest voice or a softer voice that ignores half of America definitely isn't what it will take to keep America truly great.

I said he believed in what he was doing. The fact is, it doesn't matter. He was part of the crew that lit the matches and now he feels terrible for the fire that's out of control. His contrition is admirable, but it doesn't matter. You know how i know that? Because I did pay attention to the interview. He's the one who's sobbing in the end, because he knows nothing he apologizes for now matters. He knows where this is ending, and he knows it's his fault and the fault of many others like him So call us harsh, or judgemental, or call us whatever you'd like. In the end everyone sits down to the banquet of their mistakes. Frank Luntz isn't dealing with his well. For myself and the other liberals here who are not giving Frank a pass, we'll deal with ours. Our mistakes however, didn't end the republic.......

Great stuff Frank. I salute your honesty and analysis. I am half Ukrainian, so I know how you feel about your heritage. Let's start a ground swell, listen to the people and take their frustrations, concerns and ideas to the people responsible for making change happen. KZbin is one vehicle we can use to populate the concepts and ideas to the masses. Will it be hard, hell yes, will it we difficult? Dam right, will it be worth it - YES. If not us, then who? If not now, then when? If not the peoples will - then who's' will? I am behind you 100% - Bring in Chomsky, bring in Robert, Reich, there is so much intellectual talent that can be harnessed - it can be a different America. Let’s remind the “Politicians” who pays their salary. No more Taxation without Representation! Reach Out - I am ready!

I agree with Luntz on social media. It once was seen as something positive but, of course, people have turned it into something very negative. It probably needs to be banned but that will be hard to do.

I do 'hate politics as they are now' and I did 'move to NZ'. But for love and marriage, before Palin, and not to escape the nation I love. As an American I am hurting, really hurting that my home is so divided, chaotic and unjust. It's not the nation my grandfather endured a B-17's tailgun for. I dread visiting my divided family who I love but who also dread seeing me, all of it owing to identity politics. Frank , I hope you are okay. I have heard you and I care about you. Thank you Mr Luntz for your enormous ability to take it all in, analyse it, and a willingness to share your hard earned truth. We need you, and you need us from what you said. We all need our better angels. By the way, NZ isn't a panacea either. I've been here two decades and I have studied this place each day, formally and informally. But we have this problem here as well: we are populated by humans. A few selfless and generous ones, heaps of ordinary ones, and a few who could do with some reflection and repentance. Currently the latter are not leading our government. But they have and they will again. Like America, we are divided, especially on fronts of economic disparity and justice. We like to believe we are egalitarian here, and that we always were. There are beacons of truth to this belief. First to old age pensions, first to suffrage, first to public healthcare. But we have so much to answer for from our colonial past. The common argument to gloss over crimes of colonialism is that it wasn't as bad here as everywhere else during the exploitive Age of Exploration. But it was bad and the past still echos despite the popular tendency to cover up. The best way here is to be as ignorant of history as possible, then blame the disenfranchised for not trying hard enough. Much the same as the rest of the world. We have hate, we have violence, we have incarceration of minorities in private prisons, and we have a long tail of poor educational and life outcomes. We have families living out of cars. The social safety net and the strength of the middle class have retreated like our alpine glaciers. I fear we too can see the 'End of the Golden Weather.' I keep going each day, however, in hope that we humans can also improve and heal. I'm just a recent artist trying to shelter from the enormity. Perhaps I should do more to be the change I seek. I did some of that as a teacher for as long as I could. It is easier to create and be immersed in abstraction, form and colour. But the public radio or internet is often on as I cannot help but attempt to listen, observe, analyse and communicate as much as I can. But in so doing I too fall into the traps of outrage and partisanship. Sometimes I hate. When I do so I try to think to the Millenials. In going back to university a few years back I got to know many young people, the very best and brightest, and they are brighter than most of us. I did not encounter the degree of cynicism I recall from my youth despite their knowing the existential burdens they've been left to shoulder by their forebears. There is optimism and idealism. Our best hope for keeping our republics is for us to resist squashing this out of them. If the Boomers and Gen Xers can't make our society more whole, then we should step back and let them lead...so we can all keep breathing.

Great interview, just like the rest in the series. It's heartbreaking to see the type of hate we see in the country. Frank Luntz is partially responsible for all the hate himself, he was on a mission to divide the country from the moment Obama became the president. It's all political games to them but people believe them and follow their lead. You reap what you sow, Mr. Luntz, and you were sowing Hate and division for years.
