The American F-15 EX is a new super interceptor fighter jet that is designed to patrol some of the world's most disputed air space in the south China Sea and Eastern Europe. In fact NATO scrambled jets 570 times more than once per day in 2022 to respond to Russian aircraft. And Japan is forced to scramble F-15’s every time China violates their airspace. The number of Chinese airspace incursions has jumped up from 96 in 2010 to 675 in 2019.
But critics have been quick to point out the F-15 is ancient. It was originally manufactured in 1976 and is headed into retirement. Many are questioning the logic of investing millions of dollars into upgrading the F-15 into the EX. Because it seems like a step backwards in this modern fancy era of stealth technology. But the truth is it’s not that simple. The new F-15 will have some weapons and flight capabilities that modern stealth aircraft lack. Fire an aim 9 sidewider at the like button and lets get started.
Written by: Chris Cappy & Justin Taylor
Edited by: Michael Michaelides
In producing the F-15EX we admittedly took the long scenic route. So the way it happened was during the early 2000s the F22 was supposed to replace the aging F15 but it’s program’s budget was slashed by 75%. This led to only 195 aircraft purchased which is a third of what the US air force originally wanted. In 2009 The F-22 production lines were completely shut down and are impossible to restart. This forced the air force to keep the old F15 past its expiration date in order to maintain a fleet size large enough to respond to air space violations in Europe and the pacific at the same time.
So in order to solve for the lack of F-22s the United States Air Force decided to order 104 of the new upgraded F-15EX multirole fighter, marking the first order of F-15s in over 20 years.
Earlier this year, the United States Air Force announced that after two years of extensive testing and study, their latest upgrades to the F-15 platform dubbed the EX had actually ‘smashed a new record’ in terms of capabilities and expectations. What this means is that it is able to perform as both a fighter and bomber except at a much lower cost than the F35. Now according to Boeing the new plans will extend the service life of the aircraft well into the 2030s, which would make it the longest serving fighter aircraft in American history.
Unsurprisingly like all decisions involving the military industrial complex it was met with a bunch of support and criticism from political leaders and internet forums trolls. But To be fair you can understand where they are coming from. The sticker price on a new F-15EX will run you about $80 million, while the most recent batches of F-35As cost only slightly less at $78 million, leading many to rightfully question why the government has decided to spend more money on an old aircraft originally built in 1976 with zero stealth capabilities. I think a lot of it comes down to its interceptor and escort abilities.

Cappy, didja know? The price of F-22 was down to $140-million (and falling) when we (understandably) cut the program. As you know, people like you dying in Iraq & Afghanistan & needed MRAPs ASAP. Of course, the F-15 II are cost .... more ... have vertical stabs & have targeting pods on perpendicular-pilons. Two ... _egregious_ mistakes and one small one: Jets aren't "even able to go fast at high altitude" ... they're can ONLY hit their max speed above certain altitudes ... and burn prodigious amounts of fuel as altitude decreases (denser air). Second ... the F-15 is far from the fastest jet in the world. Both the MiG-25 and MiG-31 are FAR faster. The F-15 II is a far more advanced and successful fighter ... with win-loss records that are (allegedly) impeccable. While the new RADAR is very very good ... the F-35 just got the AN/APG-85 (you know, 85 is 82 +3, so _you know_ it's better) ...and 4th ... SEAD is only performed by F-16s in an air group dedicated to the task ... it's not something given to generalist pilots on some rotation. it's just too, too difficult ... and the utility of the F-16 in this role is first that it's lighter and more agile than the F-15 ... and (sad to say) ... cheaper. And this is a very high risk. Just look up "Wild Weasel" for the genesis of this role. "YGBSM" ...

On Ward Carrol's channel several months ago, he had on a former F-15E pilot who had a little bit of stick time on the EX. This guy relayed a conversation he had with some F-22 pilots... apparently during Red Flag war games, one of their favorite scenarios is to be paired up with teammates in non-stealth aircraft with powerful radars. They explained it like this... if trying to find an F-22 was like trying to hear an individual instrument in a symphony, then trying to do it when the F-22's buddies had their radars on full blast was like trying to hear that instrument while standing next to a jackhammer. Apparently it became nearly impossible to pick up the F-22's through all the radar noise. The reason he explained this was because that new radar the F-15EX will have is going to be more powerful and with longer range then any other fighter in the world (and those radars were going to be retrofit into the E models as well). The scenario then becomes one where an F-15EX could stand off out of the radar range of opposing fighters and designate targets while creating so much noise that the opposing force never have the ability to see the F-22's and F-35's (this is on top of the often cited scenario where the stealth aircraft paint targets while the EX's act like missile trucks). Now plop a few of those in Japan and the Philippines...

Add to that where the F22's and F35's stay in radar passive modes, having the F15EX relay the radar data to the other aircraft in the vicinity using narrowband transmissions that are only received by the local aircraft on the allied side. The F15EX's can paint air and ground targets and transmit that data to the stealth aircraft who may not even have to go active with their radars to engage a target, or go active at the last moment to engage the weapon platform. Throw into the mix some that are strictly tasked with SEAD, you can almost guarantee air superiority over most threats including most small drones. The one concern that still hasn't been deployed or talked about much are swarm drones, but that is so costly that most countries can't afford to deploy them, yet....

In the Philippines, I don't think we can even afford F15EX. We could barely afford the Korean FA50 and Turkish ATAK helicopter. Good video, but one small but important correction: the Legion pod functionality of sharing targeting information with other units has been a major capability in F-35 development from the beginning. The idea is that it can penetrate enemy airspace and pass on targeting information to non-stealthy units outside that airspace, even ground and sea units. It's even part of the sales pitch for the F-15EX, with the Eagle providing the F-35 with more ordnance. The F-35 is far more likely to pass targeting information on to the F-15EX than the other way around.

The per unit and per flight hour costs are no longer an issue for the F-35 due to improvements in RAM. This improvement in heat resistance of RAM is also going to lower the per/hour costs for the F22! The big thing for the F-15 is that it is a huge missile truck that could carry some of the biggest missiles around. The F-35 can ask the F-15 to fire a specific munition and then can redirect that munition on the way to the target. This makes the combo extremely powerful. Especially once the aim 260 is available.

@@mikeyd4390 Radar Absorbing Material. It is a material that can now absorb up to 80% of a specific set of electromagnetic waves, in this case in targeting radar spectrum. This is used in areas where the shape of the plane cannot deflect the wave away from the radar receiver. It's used to "hide" various areas like panel doors and screws and parts of control surfaces. basically anywhere a surface or object on the plane may change it's relative position to the radar receiver changing it's reflection. This material originally was somewhat fragile and so high performance jet like the F22 would "wear" this RAM off and it had to be repaired to keep the Radar Cross Section to it's minimum. Note, any damage to the F22 like an explosion of a missile that might not kill the F22 would make it's RCS jump up from a bumble bee size to a much larger object. The F35's RAM was developed later and is less fryable but it does need consistent maintenance. Early RAM was also reactive to water, it didn't absorb as well when wet. Over time new materials are being developed including ceramic RAM that absorb and disperse electromagnetic wave but also don't heat up like earlier RAM, now it even disperses Infrared and Ultraviolet in a way that makes modern missile seekers harder to find the target and more vulnerable to countermeasures. NOTE, all this information is publicly available. The US and EU have GREAT Chem E.s!

Good video. I'll use my experience in the F-15C to address points in chronological order. We're not upgrading F-15s into the EX, we're buying new F-15EX models because the F-15Cs have way too many flight hours on them, to the point that the airframes are cracking and there are G-load limits on them now. Why? The F-35 can't fill the missions roles the F-15C does and there aren't enough F-22s. The F-35 needs a host of logistics support such as FOBs, Tankers and AWACS that the F-15 doesn't need. Why? Range. F-35 can't project airpower because it's too small, it has a hard time cooling the radar and they still can't get close to the APG-63 radar range of the old C model. The F-35 is a 2nd line situation awareness platform in a large airforce and a small regional fighter for a small air force. The F-15C has the worldwide record for longest missile shot, range is classified. We dont care if you see us when we have missiles on the way by the time you do. Can we lock and shoot the F-22 and F-35? Yes. F-22 is harder by far. I've 'air policed' ADIZ in Iceland, Latvia and Estonia etc. F-15Cs accompanied the F-22s on the balloon shoot down because of the SNIPER pods capability btw. Confiormal fuel tanks are indeed a drag. Since the F-15Cs left Lakenheath, F-15Es have been air policing with conformals off. Best case in hindsight we should have given the F-35 contract to Boeing and let Lockheed keep making F-22s. Congress/Defense appointees really hamstrung the USAF so that Lockheed could have their export darling F-35. The F-15EX is the stop gap to the loss in mission capability that decision cost us.

That would require going active and they lose all stealth capacity at that point. Did you miss the part where they talk about the new radar? That noisy plane in the back is what will mark and manage targeting for the stealth fighters, not the other way around. It will also serve as a missile truck while fulfilling this first purpose at the same time; it isn't a binary choice where you only get one or the other. It will mark targets FOR stealth fighters, so that they can stay STEALTHY. This should not be so hard yet every other person is under the same impression as you.

I've heard the aerial doctrine idea is to use F-15EXs as rear-line flying missile-artillery boats, while using F-35s as deep-penetration scout-recon units. The F-35 paints targets from behind enemy lines and at close aerial detection range, and rather than give up its own stealth by launching its own payloads, it relays the information back to long-range missile-equipped F-15EXs that use pre-acquired targeting data from the F-35s to launch from outside their own detection range, essentially allowing the F-15EX to snipe enemies from afar, while tripling the kill-payload of the F-35, without endangering either jet.

@@sushio4357 The lost wing was from a mid-air collision, not a structural failure. The Mig-31 really doesn’t have a lot of structural strength because it’s not a fighter, just an interceptor and weapons platform. The wings weren’t designed to be able to maneuver, or to take the stress required to do so. If you tried to turn a Mig-31 like you can turn an F-15, the wings would fall off. I believe there was one incident with an early model F-15 having a wing snap off during training, but this was in the 2000s and that particular aircraft was one of the oldest F-15s with an absurd number of flight hours on it, which caused excessive metal fatigue in the wing spars. The Su-25 is tough, but not as tough as the A-10 because of the position of the engines and the wing design being inherently more vulnerable. Both aircraft are obsolete though.

The Stealth Fighters and integrated link tech that shares info as mentioned via the Legion Pod, can and will and send messages to payload carriers to fire a munition at a target as fast as possible. If you have a flight of these aircraft loitering with massive amounts of payload munitions with decent range loitering at the edge of an aerospace battlefield you absolutely increase the capability of the Stealth Fighters to continue a mission well after they have spent their munitions. The reason I am not sold on stealth is because we haven't fought a peer competitor since World War 2, every other conflict we've been in since then we've had complete tech dominance over, that will not be the case with China and to a lesser degree Russia, in either of those scenarios we are stepping into the unknown and cannot be so certain of our own capabilities. On paper the F-22 and F-35 look amazing, problem is they have very limited combat records, the F-35 is still riddled with problems to this very hour and I would be surprised if it isn't put to the wayside in favor of the NGAD I doubt the F-35 will ever see major combat like the F-22 before it. Unfortunately in spite of our own military admitting that China is either near parity in most technologies, and have exceeded us in others, people still have this bizarre cold war perception of Chinese capabilities as being low tech or incompetent. Our own military officials are very concerned about where we are in relation to China but the American citizenry has this crazy opposite belief that China would be a push over.

It's an excellent weapons platform, with capabilities that can make exactly what the F-15EX is hard to define. I guarantee you 5 to 10 years from now the F-15EX will still be at the top of a very short list of fighters that dominate the skies. So many of the foreign made stealth planes aren't going to achieve stealth, some ever and others only from a very limited perspective. One or two F-15EX embedded with F-22s and or F-35s, is a flight of planes no one could defeat. The vast majority of opposing fighters wouldn't even get within visual range of such a group. The best part is, it's also a top tier plane in speed and payload. As a fail safe, the u.s. could sell them used and most of the rest of the air force's on this planet would be falling over themselves to get in line to buy them. Anyone who disagrees just hasn't learned enough about this plane.

Stealth is a joke. Satellites are watching every airstrip in the world, 24/7, and tracking everything in the air, since the 1950s. It's a threat to Russia and China because they're broke and cheap. It's not a threat to the US or other Western nations.

@@ricomock2 Pipe dreams! Everyone fell asleep after beating the crap out of Sadam's 3rd world Airforce. The world moved on. Russians and Chinese have modern radars that can detect USA's "stealth" planes. Instead of investing in missile tech we went on with this Stealth and aircraft carrier nonsense. Turns out all it takes is 3-4 Kinzals and aircraft carrier is gone. Kinzal is a little guy, Zircon is the one to worry about. USA/NATO has the largest military budget in the world and nothing to show for it except submarines.

@DXD2004- Kinzals? LOL We are literally giving away missle defense systems that swat them out of the sky, what makes you think they're any more of a threat than all the other hypersonic ballistic missles that have been around since the 80's? What's your point about radars being able to see stealth planes? Radars have always had the capability of seeing them, there is no such thing as a RCS of 0. The problem has never been radar being able to see stealth planes, and has always been the user of the radar being able to pick them out from the background noise of other things flying around with similar RCS levels. There's a whole lot of things flying around with a RCS equivalent to a 1/8in sphere (rounding up for a F-117), nevermind the .004in sphere equivalent of the more modern planes

If I recall correctly, the 31 is almost purely thrust because it's designed to run down bombers. Very small weapons fit, and not terribly manueverable because it's not supposed to chase things that can evade, only things that go high and fast. Not really meant to engage hostile fighters.

The 31 is an interceptor. The 15 is multi-role, one of which is interceptor. The main reason to go at it's top speed would be to intercept. So, pitting both planes in the same role the 31 wins IMHO as it has the higher top speed and a much higher ceiling. What happens when they get there is more to do with the missiles than the plane so I believe whoever gets there first wins this particular argument. And that would be the 31. Everytime.

17:35 "pass off targetting data to another aircraft" The F-35 can TOTALLY do this from inception. They fly in buddy pairs. The far one has the radar on, and thus is visible to enemies, but keeps far away to be safe. When it spots enemies, it shares the targeting data with the near one, that gets within 20km and kills the enemy from an less-protected angle. Once the near one exhausts his four fires, they trade roles.

When I see something like the F-15 get an extended life I'm thoroughly convinced the designers of so many of our military equipment that was designed in the 70sand 80s really had longevity in mind. I could be wrong but when you look at things like the Abrams tank or the various fighters for both the Air force and Navy these designs have been a force to be reckoned with for decades. One thing I can apply about continuing using Gen 4 aircraft is that its that nice balance between capability and cost vs new Gen 5 aircraft. Which as you pointed out not to many Nations can weild at this time. Now imagine if these could be used against the Russians right now. Then the F-15 could really rack up some more kills to its name.

I would suggest that a big part of that is about miniaturization. The Abrams and F-15 were designed to be a specific size to fit specific gear. As tech rolled on, that gear (and often better equivalents of said gear) got smaller/lighter and so with space/weight open for use things got added on. (The Abrams kept getting heavier with each upgrade, though the next proposed change would actually shave 10 tons off IIRC.) Because they were mass manufactured as a platform and are well developed designs (Meaning virtually all the issues are known and if fixable fixed by now) they become cost efficient options for a given role. Example: You want to test an Air-Air DEW system? Stick it on the F-15, B-52 or C-130 platforms depending on weight/size.

No he definitely got that wrong. The data-linked targeting is one of the primary advantages of the F-35. Moreover, it is also able to forward sensor and targeting information to naval and ground fires. This is especially significant for missile defence, as it dramatically expands the radar horizon, the threat identification and response window and the data set for the creation of a targeting solution.

Great vid, but I always nitpick this one area when people knock the F-35 and F-22 for being "slower" than something like the F-15. That top speed number for the F-15EX is in CLEAN configuration. If it is fully loaded with AMRAAMS and fuel tanks and sensor pods, it likely can't even outrun an F-35. So while the top speed number is nice to cite, it rarely ever gets approached by a 4th gen fighter with a full-sortie loadout.

I flew the F-15E and the USAF needs more than the proposed number they plan to buy. The new jets should be going to the active duty and not to the guard. Flying intercept missions defending the ADIZ does not require the newest and most advanced aircraft, case in point the recent aircraft that crashed in Virginia. Building the new fighter without conformal tanks reflects on the strength of the Air to Air mafia in the USAF, the moto of “not a pound for air to ground” comes to mind. I loved the fact you covered the man hours require to keep the stealthy aircraft airborne. With the recruitment problems the USAF is facing, those man hours required will only get more difficult to accomplish. The USAF could have kept the cost down had they signed a contract for a long term buy. Boeing is now out there signing contract for X number aircraft rather than a specific number which would allow them to be in a stronger position to negotiate a better price. I could go on but I hope you get my point, the USAF leadership is putting all their eggs in “new technology” with very limited payload, range and loiter time.
