Had an AMC Rebel SST with 343 cubic inch aluminum block engine. It was a fantastic freeway cruiser and great touring car. The split bench seats fully reclined creating almost a queen sized bed with the back seat pan.

I'm an American Motors man at heart, so I'm excited to see y'all showcasing a clean '70! My first car was a '69 AMX that exact same green color except mine didn't have the black shadow mask. Drove it all through high school in the early 2000s and I kick myself daily for getting rid of it!!!

We had the 68 AMX with the 390. My uncle bought it new, and then we owned it. That is one we should have never sold. Really nice car. Good memories driving that car. Nice to see someone who knows cars like Donald Osborne appreciate the AMX.

When I was in high school (1970-71), I was the lot boy for the Ramble/AMC dealer in town (Sarasota, Fl). I had the chance to drive the exact car that he was driving in the video and it's my favorite color of the AMX. My mom worked there and got me the job. Needless to say, all the cars that I had in high school and college were AMC. I had several Rambler Americans, 2 Classics 660, and a Ambassador with the 343 engine. My parents both had Javelins, my dad had the 6 cylinder 232 will my mom had a Javelin SST with the 360. Ramble/AMC were great cars and easy to work on. I laughed when I saw the vacuum gauge, since the windshield wipers were vacuum driven, every time you gave the car gas, the windshield wipers would stop working until you let up on the gas, which was too good in the hard down-pours we would get here in Florida.

I'm old enough to remember when these were being built, so I didn't need the education, but appreciate it for the many who have never heard of the AMX or AMC for that matter. I grew up in a GM town, but there was one brave soul who bought one of these in the late 70s and early 80s. I always liked this as well as the Javelin and the AMC Eagle too. Thanks for the video!

I had my opportunity twice in life to have a 2 seat AMX. First a 69 in 75 4sp low miles and I couldn't afford it at $2700. The second chance was in 97 another 390 2 seat auto in excellent condition engine body low miles all of it but needed a back seat to sell it to the better half. That one was $25,000 then. Always till lately underrated by the masses but always appreciated by the hard core fans/owners. Cheers 🇨🇦

Great review. I had no real idea of how great the AMX was, always loved it though and thought that it was just another muscle/ sports car of the era. In analyzing why it never got the accolades, it most likely was because of the AMX brand, which to many, was seen as a cut rate brand. AMC really did much more with so much less than the Big 3 automakers, and I admire all of their ideas.

That exact car was my first car 1970 Amx in Lime Gold Metallic with flat black hood with scoop 390/325 HP and a positraction rear end and a Carter 4 barrel carburator. Drove it everyday for probably 9 years until the rear end went out and I sold it to someone that had wanted it for a long time. Car was made for only 3 years and limited to under 20,000 units (1968 thru 1970). Serial numbers located on Glove box door.

AMC AMX 390, 10,000 made, serial number 3853. Red with dual white racing stripes. I bought a 2-year-old low mileage when I was 18. Within 4 months insurance companies decided you had to pay high risk insurance if you're under a certain age I don't remember maybe 21 or 24 I think. So I stuck a 360 in it. Swapped out the two barrel manifold with the one from the 390 engine by drilling some different holes in the four barrel manifold. Still ran great. Handled magnificently. Not nostalgic for old technology but I wish I had that car now with a 390 engine. Most recent high performance thing I own was a 2004 Harley-Davidson V-Rod which supposedly could have done the quarter mile at 2.73 seconds as I had it set up for racing but I never got it below 3.01 seconds. That was fun but I'd rather have the AMX back.

What I find great about this video is not just the review of a terrific car but the fact they are on a proper back road with NO power poles. Exactly the path that these cars were engineered for. Speed AND handling. Something in the throughs of 50 years ago was few and far between. Additionally, thank you for your knowledge of the car AND the brand. The 1st-gen Javelin and AMX were fantastic cars. What AMC did in the muscle arena in the short time they did it, is amazing.

In 1970, I bought a brand new Lime Green, with a black half vinyl top, AMC Javelin 390. I took the 390 stickers off the side of the car & replaced them with 304 stickers. I never lost a race until the guys I beat looked under the hood & saw the 390 sticker on the air cleaner. LOL, I had to give back the racing money I won. After a while, I didn’t lift the hood after a race anymore. lol good memories of that fantastic car, I left mustangs in the dust!

I bought the first 1968 AMX in New England while it was still on the truck, 390/4 sp.. Drove it hard and fell in love. When the 1970 came out, I fell in love again, 390/4 sp.. My father and sister followed suit, both 70's/4 sp. My father went overboard and raced his at tracks and in hillclimbs, with some success. When I bought my first house the car had to go, but I vowed I wasn't done. Over the next few years, I bought two 1970's. The AMX will forever be my favorite car.

I owned a 70 AMX 360 4-speed Go package. With 3.73 posi, if you short shifted that torque motor it was quick but ran out of revs at 5500. It handled well for skinny tires. I had tremendous fun with my AMX and it drew a lot of attention and respect from fellow muscle car guys.

Amc factory never produced a high tunned 390/401 most had mild cam timing, hi-po cams made 100 more horse easily. And extended shift points from 5500 to 6500 ,but it still had the low end. Still One of the fastest standard engines ever made.
