Great video! We moved here 20 years ago when the population was about 33,000. Although it's grown exponentially over the years, it's up to the individual to get out and move around or stay near the area that they are comfortable with. When we first got here we took line dancing lessons and went the squares fairly often (2 or 3 times a week). After a while the newness wore off and now the squares seem be too crowded for us ... but we still go occasionally. We play golf quite a bit, I'm in two billiards leagues, the wife goes to the pool daily, shops and does a lot with her friends. Of course, we are now both in our 80's and don't do as much as before, but we're still walking, talking, laughing and feel that the move here has no only made our lives better, but kept us alive longer. One thing about the video, when the young lady said that the bank was an historic building ... that's just a story. All around The Villages there are signs about the buildings and so on about the history. However, The Villages has been built from scratch and the stories are just a fantasy to give an old feeling to the place. Even Lake Sumter was created by the developers, it didn't exist when we first came here in 2003. All in all though, it's a great place to live. And as we age we realize that this is really just "God's waiting room".

As a long time resident of a different 55+ community, I couldn't help but notice how many couples there seemed to be. Dancing, having fun, strolling, dining... doing things as a couple. I lost my Spouse five years ago after living in our community and the one thing that jumps out at me to this day, five years later is that as a newly 'single" person, I'm... precluded (??) from much of that. The dinner parties, happy hours and get-togethers we enjoyed for more than 15 years, I have been excluded from in the years since. I now sit at home with our small dog and make one attempt after another to be included SOMEWHERE with SOMEONE but find I'm (honestly?) not generally welcome. I'll leave it at that for the sake of brevity but ask that people reach out and make others that are less fortunate and are without a "significant other" be included in your happy retirement lifestyle. We are NOT out to steal your Spouse!!! We would just enjoy some inclusion and have much to offer. Honestly!

Retirement living is getting harder to afford these days, especially with inflation eating into savings. Even if you have a decent nest egg, balancing day-to-day living expenses with long-term growth feels like walking a tightrope.
@roseyfischer

Absolutely. One of the biggest mistakes people make is underestimating healthcare costs or failing to diversify their portfolio for steady income. I’ve seen retirees run out of money because they relied too heavily on just one source of income, like Social Security or their 401(k).

Here's the true lay-of-the-land across the Villages -- flat and hot. The artificiality and directionlessness and forced vacuousness of "oldies radio" blaring out of outdoor speakers is mind-numbing like an MK Ultra experiment. This is what Florida has been turned into -- artificial everything, superficial grins in a totally totalitarian environment -- an essential third world dumping ground for America's mostly White consumers who must be entertained constantly. Should there ever be any real moments of silence for any long duration, these people would be losing their minds. The spectator mentality that sucks one's very soul out of you and will ensure one never rises above disposable crap.

I was planning on watching 5 minutes but ended up watching the entire video. My sweet 91 year young daddy who recently passed away would have loved this placed as he was very social and loved to dance. He did live a wonderful life and was very blessed every where he lived! How wonderful to see older people enjoy their lives and being active. Today I see young people spending hours watching Netflix or their phones. No matter our age, if we do not move our bodies, keep learning, stay isolated, we will have a lot of complications and illnesses. Lastly, people everywhere have misconceptions of other people and places. That is because they do not bother to visit other places but stay all their lives in one place and repeat whatever they hear without verifying.

Golf courses, swimming pools, golf carts, restaurants, bars. And it was so peacefully quiet. I met their friend who was 96 and you would've thought he was 70. I truly believe living like that adds years onto their lives, rather than spending the last 20 years of your life sat in your house, like we do.

My husband’s grandparents live there. They’ve been there since the late 90’s. We have visited many times. It’s an absolutely wonderful place. It’s so heartwarming to see all these happy, energetic older people loving life, loving it to the fullest. You don’t move there to sit and wait to die, you move there to get busy living! Everyone helps take care of each other. Especially when someone looses a spouse. Think about how hard it is when you are elderly and you loose your spouse and your family lives somewhere else and has their own lives. The Villages has such a strong caring community and so many who have been there who can help in those types of situations. Or health issues, think about your grandmother sick alone unable to drive to get medicine or see her doctor, or prepare food for herself. That’s not an issue there. It really is a wonderful way to enjoy retirement. Heck my husband and I are 45, and we live in a similar community in a different state. We have said for yrs we would love living there once we retire. Thank you for showing how great it is, of course there could be things going on that you mentioned but I’ve never seen or heard of it from anyone who actually lives there.

As someone that moved to The Villages almost 10 yrs. ago, I appreciate you're review of our neighborhood. Most of us grew up at a time when life seemed simpler. We smile and say "hello" to strangers. We wave people out of their driveways instead of honking our horns. We ask people who seem lost if they need directions or help. We enjoy welcoming people to our neighborhood and are proud of our lifestyle. It's not for everybody but for those who thrive here, it's a lucky find. For so many it's the same story. They came to visit just to see what the place was all about and before they knew it, the hook was set.

Great exploration as usual Peter. I’m 52 and live in stunningly beautiful Venice Florida, but recently did a 5 day lifestyle stay in The Villages. My take is that it’s everything you saw and more. People move to the area not to retire and kick the bucket but to LIVE. People in The Villages are happy! There is a high probability that I will purchase a home in the community over the next few years. Have a Sunny Florida Day!

I’m a 62 year old that is living in an older retirement community farther south on I-75 in the Tampa area called Sun City Center. I’ve lived here for 21 years and provide musical entertainment throughout my community. A few months ago, I got a call to provide music for a New Years Eve 2023 event in The Villages. It’s an hour and 30 minute drive one way. Looking forward to the event and the possibility of more performing opportunities there. The Villages are 20 years newer than SCC and has 110,000 more people, so there will be more opportunity for gigs in the Villages. You never know til you try! Both communities have a lot of activities and dancing so I’ll know what to expect.

Peter, Thanks so much for doing this video, us Villagers really appreciate it. There have been other people that have videoed us here, but all he did was find and report on a few negative pieces. We are 140K strong city and with that, you’re going to have some problem people. There are so many rumors that go around about The Villages and we just get tired of hearing them. All they have to do is come out here to visit for themselves, but I can almost guarantee that they won’t want to leave. We have music 365 at 3 squares, 1 stage/restaurant area and they are continuing to build more. We have over 4000 clubs to join and you can create a club as well. For the most part, everyone is nice and caring. Fuel pump went out on my golf car, so I was parked on the side of the multi-modal path. Only one person didn’t stop and ask if I needed help and the one person that didn’t stop, was probably someone that was visiting family here. When I’m too old to drive my car, I know that I can still drive my golf car to get around and meet up with friends. This truly is paradise for us. Thanks Again. ❤

Great Video! This is so much better than what my grand parents lived in after retirement. This keeps them social and active which is exactly what you want when you retire or just want to keep working but want to be surrounded with people over 50! Some people retire and unfortunately just sit and watch TV all day in their home or apartment and never really get out and live life after working 30+ years. I'm 45 and when I retire or semi retire would love to live in a place like this! Who ever thought of this concept is a Genius! One huge bonus is not having to deal with teenagers disrespecting elderly while they are out for a walk or trying to enjoy their selves. This is a huge issue I see with my parents when they go out. This type of facility does not have those kids to upset the elderly which is a huge +. Plus they can find new hobbies to keep them active and prolong their lives! Love this!!!

@@dingdongdickweed6288Florida has 2,000+ special districts (basically communities that pay for their own infrastructure in order to remain private). The Villages is made up of several special districts. Hence, homelessness is considered trespassing or loitering and subject to removal and possible arrest. Next, it’s not segregated. For many, it’s just not a known thing. If anything, I think it’s more of a cultural thing. If your active it's a great place to be, just because you are over 55 doesn't mean you have to sit in your old home, assisted living, or apartment and wait to die. People down there still go to church, still volunteer, and YES they "enjoy" NOT HAVING to go earn a living every day. They earned it let them be. Thank you Peter Santenello for a great tour of the lifestyle.

Peter & Heather ... EXCELLENT video of the area. You both brought to life but another option of an all inclusive way of living. I'm in Toronto, Canada and 66. I was very impressed with the love and kindness of the people that live there. My mom lived until 87 years and she would have just been thrilled to live there. Great job.

Oh my goodness! I need to move there! I’m at a crossroad in my life bc I lost my husband of 39 years to brain cancer. It’s been four years now. I’m selling my house bc living there is keeping me in grief. He passed away in our home and the images are too much for me to even get a good nights rest. I’m going to really consider this

I live about 15 miles from the Villages and they are expanding for miles and miles around. I've never felt the Villages was in any way negative, it's an amazing place. Over 1,000 things to do there, from studying languages to tennis, swimming, golf, bridge, yoga, pilates, you name it, they have it. You never have to leave there.

I looked on Google Earth and it showed the border of The Villages but I can see it has expanded quite a lot beyond that border already. The Morse family are certainly onto a good thing!
