To play devil's advocate (especially since I have never attended a match there), one has to consider its primary purpose: to host the US Open, the last of tennis' four Grand Slam tournaments. The idea is accommodate as many people as possible. The fact that the US Open sells out each year would indicate that the organizers have succeeded.

Nice stadium. Simple stadium, but great atmosphere. Hope they don't change a thing. Sat in the upper deck, low in the 5th row though, and the view was good. Higher up would be a bit much, but it's fine and all the people make it a better atmosphere.glad they added the roof. I was there a year or 2 before that was added and the final was rained out and pushed to Monday.

It is the perfect layout for boxing/wrestling/MMA events. It would probably be used more if there weren't already three NBA/NHL arenas within 10 miles of it. And it appears there is nothing to do around it before or after the event as far as bars or restaurants.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is held there. It used to be held at Madison Square Garden in the winter, now at Arthur Ashe in the spring. They can close the roof if it's too chilly or it's raining.

The original Stadium Court (now Louis Armstrong Stadium) had a capacity of 20,000.
@gregsells85497 ай бұрын
It was built for the 1964 New York World's Fair as Singer Bowl, used for various spectacles and housing displays of the sponsor's sewing machines. Later it was a concert venue, and it got its present name when the Newport Jazz Festival staged a Louis Armstrong memorial concert after his death.

Mr. Ginger, visit the US Open. Attendance is roughly 950k for two weeks. The economic impact is about the same as an NFL team (people from around the world visit). Arthur Ashe is big… but the stadium is only part of the experience.

I would love, for once, to see a video of him going to an actual game IRL. Doesn't matter the sport, doesn't matter the city. It would be a massive improvement, just being able to provide some personal experience instead of just learning facts from Wikipedia.

There's some valid criticism of Arthur Ashe, but no mention that the roof is actually a separate structure. The comment on the empty seats shows ignorance on how tennis sales tickets (which is its ken set of issues) 2023 US Open had attendance of 957,000
@Arturo-sm1tb7 ай бұрын
Agree on the Ginger take. You cannot even hear the ball from the upper rows. But its impossible to renovate the stadium when all the corporate and wealthy patrons sit in the decent seats now, and they would never allow it.

The problem with a social area in the upper deck is you can't really talk during tennis matches so it kind of defeats the purpose

Ive been watching tennis for a long time and havent heard any complaints. I do hear complaints about Rome though, as they desperately need a roof.
@linkin20la7 ай бұрын
The issue wasn't that the roof couldn't fit it was that the ground could not support the weight of the roof. Apparently the stadium is built on top of what is described as swamp like soil. Also the issue you forgot to mention is the conditions of the court. With the stadium being so massive there is crazy wind patterns that are created. Every year they mention the wind at this stadium causing issues for the players and it's not like that at the other stadiums on the US Open grounds. Not to mention the crazy humidity and heat there, the players are always drenched in sweat more than in other tournaments - except for maybe Acapulco.

The retractable roof also makes it unbearably hot on the court. Traps the heat on a hot day. It was like 125 degrees on court last year. And because its a “outdoor” tournament they will not put on the A/C
