Why is a team located in the suburbs of a major metropolitan area considered strange?

Inglewood, California can't have any skyscrapers because of it's very close proximity to LAX airport.

The park by sofi is a cemetery. Also it used to be a horse racing track and there is the Forum right there where the Kings/Lakers played for years before staples center. It hosts all the major concerts in LA as well.

Minneapolis and St. Paul are both the hubs of the metro area, so placing a stadium in either one isn't weird. The teams clearly identify with both cities (calling themselves "Minnesota," wearing the names of both cities on jerseys, the light-up Twin City sculpture at Target Field, etc)

Right. And me and most fans have zero problem with the Xcel Energy Center. Might be outdated but it's still one of the better hockey areas there is. I love all the windows. Are teams may not win jack but all our stadiums are awesome.

Also for those of you wondering about St. Paul Minnesota. It is located probably 8-10 minutes away from Minneapolis with no traffic. Downtown St. Paul just got a really nice minor league field for the twins a couple of years ago I believe.

Ok….St. Paul is the capital of Minnesota and they are called the twin cities, so Xcel Energy Center doesn’t belong on this list. Gillette stadium absolutely does being in Foxboro MA, which is in an area that has nothing really. Two other omissions I can think of are Globe Life Stadium, and AT & T stadium, both in Arlington, TX. which is about 15 miles from Downtown Dallas. Oh yeah, and the Canadian Tire Center, located in Kanata Ontario, well away from downtown Ottawa. When the Bears build the Arlington Heights stadium, you can add that as well.

Most cities don’t have the space or funds to build a downtown stadium. Very few pull it off. It’s not totally weird to see a further out stadium.

Toronto was able to get all their professional sports teams downtown. The Toronto Blue Jays baseball play out of Roger's Center (formerly Skydome) that is right in the middle of downtown. The Leafs hockey and Raptors basketball share Scotia arena about one block over from Rogers/ Skydome. They are almost side by side. Then Toronto FC soccer and Argos football share a stadium on the old CNE grounds not quite middle of downtown but close enough. Toronto however "got lucky" because the Roger's Center/ Skydome was built before all the major development went up around it and it was old govt rail yard lands that the govt help build the stadium. And the hockey/ basketball arena was an old govt owned postal warehouse sorting facitlity so again the govt helped donate and build the stadiums. And soccer and football already had the old Exhibition stadium (where the Blue Jays and Argos used to play) on it. The old Ex stadium was just torn down and the new stadium built on the old location/ land. Edit- forgot to add the new Women's Hockey Team plays out of the old Toronto Maples Leafs arena- formely Maple Leafs Garden that is also downtown. But that was built nearly 100 years ago (1927 I think...maybe 1919) so there really was not much of a "downtown" back then.

St. Paul and Minneapolis are literally the the same urban area. The team is named after the state after all.

I grew up in South FL and attended many, many Panthers games. That "weird swamp" as you put it is actually the Florida Everglades. I guess it is pretty weird for a hockey arena to be there but growing up around it I never even thought twice about it. I know the placement is pretty out there but I remember the Miami Arena and that place was a fucking dump and in one of the worst neighborhoods in Miami, so when it opened it was actually a huge upgrade. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago now. Another fun fact is that stadium is also across the street from one of the biggest malls in the country which is also kind of weird. My high school graduation was also there. Anyway, love the vids. Keep up the good work.

Foxboro isn’t a weird location, because it is only 5 to 10 minutes out of Boston. Also they are called the New England Patriots, not the Boston Patriots really the team could be in New Hampshire, of course that wouldn’t happen but the team is named by the region not the city

Sandy, UT is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. I believe it even has SLC based addresses. If someone is traveling to Sandy from a different city, they’ll usually just say that they’re going to Salt Lake.

The NHL Panthers arena looks like it's in the Everglades which it does border but it's in the Broward county suburbs which are super busy and crowded and right across the street from the arena is Sawgrass Mills mall that's second to Disney World as far as annual visitors (23 million) and 10 million cars drive there yearly.

The old Richfield Coliseum in Richfield, OH. Home of the Cavaliers, indoor soccer, arena football and minor league hockey until the downtown arena was built. Not only was it closer to Akron than Cleveland, the only thing near it was an exit off I-271. Literally, no restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores or anything. The best thing about it was that no public money was involved.

Definitely a weird one but that may change soon. But Kanata is actually in Ottawa, which some people don't realize. Was once it's own city, but not as of 2001

"Tampa Bay" is not a city. It's an area. So a team named "Tampa Bay" being located in St. Petersburg is exactly in the right location. On the other hand, a team named "Dallas Cowboys" being located over a half hour away in Arlington, closer to another major city, Ft. Worth, than it is to the namesake of Dallas... that makes no sense

MetLife Stadium, while in a swampy area, is definitely not in the middle of nowhere. You can be in NYC in a few minutes and there's stuff to do if you go down Route 3, all with easy access to the NJ Turnpike.

For college teams, Rentschler Field, home of the UConn Huskies football team, is located in East Hartford, about a 30 minute drive away from the Storrs campus. And the basketball team plays a lot of games at the XL Center in Hartford.

Teams in South Florida are associated with Miami so having an arena that far from Miami is perhaps the reasoning for it being on this list. The arena itself seems nice, have never been to it though

The interesting thing about the major sports teams in the Twin Cities is all of them going by Minnesota, their state's name, and not Minneapolis or St. Paul.

First of all. The panthers have no plans to relocate. The team has gotten much support even tho they didn’t win the cup. Just because a team hasn’t won a championship does not mean it’s time for them to hunt for a new area. You need to do your research.

I'm with you on trees. If and when the Royals move, I'm very much hoping trees will be implemented at the new stadium. There is zero shade at the current parking lot and KC summers can be brutal. It'd also help the air quality and anything that helps out the environment is a win.

St Paul is literally right across the river from Minneapolis and yes, Allianz Field is also in St Paul. Personally, I would have far preferred they built the MLS stadium at the old Sears store which is right by the state capital.

Inglewood is a major part of LA proper and the small collection of downtown tall buildings were majority built in the late 80's but the city never really had skyscrapers, there was a race track where SoFi is now, the Florida Panthers didn't build that arena the city of Fort Lauderdale did, the highway is I75 and on the other side is the 4th biggest mall in the US along with the majority of the city's population, having the everglades beside the highway is interesting but all the cities including Miami also use the I75 has a buffer between itself and the everglades

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact the Levi's Stadium shares its parking lot with Great America. Now THAT'S gotta be weird, especially on game days, considering that the parking lot is already kind of small for either a stadium or an amusement park.

@@nathanbrandli6827 it’s interesting for sure. You don’t typically see a team whose name features a prominent city (SF 49ers) playing near a different prominent city (SJ). And a lot of people don’t know this, but San Jose is actually bigger in population and size than San Francisco. SJ is the 10th largest city in the U.S. It could very well support its own team, but the Niners would never change their name, because the name “49ers” is so significant to SF’s history. I would definitely feel a little salty about that if I was from San Jose tho lol!

Levi's is built on the site of the 49er's pre-existing training center. The area is business parks and an amusement park. There really hasn't been any new development since the stadium opened. Candlestick Point was a terrible location for a stadium, so its good they moved.

Levi’s Stadium is not exactly in an ideal location either. Not to mention, going from Candlestick Point to Santa Clara just meant they traded one extreme in weather for another (for Bay Area standards). People have had heat strokes at Levi’s, and there have been many games where those upper deck seats remained empty because of the heat, affecting the Niners attendance. I don’t know that Santa Clara was exactly the right move, and given the tumultuous relationship the team has had with that city’s leadership recently, I would not be surprised if in just 10 years we hear about the Niners trying to break their 40 year lease with SC to build another stadium in another cooler (both literal and figurative) location.

I've actually a Panther home game there. It's in a mythical place called "Sunrise". It's nowhere near Ft. Lauderdal,e, not to mention Miami. If Ottawa Senators fans ever attended a Panther game they'd never comlain about the location of CT Centre again! BTW-whenever I see a "full house" at a Panther game I keep hearing the word "paper". keeps

How are the wild in a wierd location. The twin cities are both large cities only on opposite sides of the Mississippi River. All the major roads and transit is connected and St. Paul is the capital of the state. Also the xcel center was renovated a couple of years ago. Confused. Why is St Petersburg weird? It's Tampa Bay Rays, not Tampa. The majority of the metro population lives on the St Pete side of the bay. That's why it's there.

These structures are in these places and weird situations for a reason. There is too many people in this world with A lack Of vision and artistic detail or they fail to hire someone in planning that does think this way. These owners go overboard only thinking about money and not the long-term and then they wonder why they end up having to Relocate Or lose money. The NFL can get away with putting their stadiums anywhere because it's the biggest market and sadly fans are slaves to it. I believe every single stadium and arena should be around it's cities skyline and have some nice backdrop And be a part Of the overall skyline itself. People with that whole "why does it matter" mentality is exactly Why these situations Don't look good.

So Minnesota is in a pickle right now, invest privately funded money and state taxpayer money into a out dated nhl arena for renovation of use that money to completely rebuild a nba arena. One of the arenas will have to host both teams as well. Lots of goodies on that if you need a video idea

No. I love my Heat and Panthers but I hate when teams share venues. It’s not the same feel atmosphere wise plus I don’t want to mix ice with the court. I wouldn’t mind the Panthers back in Miami but probably won’t happen…not many places in Miami to build an arena unless they go in the suburbs of Miami which is being built up alot but they went there separate ways because Panthers wanted there own arena when the Heat was getting the new arena built

From NYC and I can't stand where Metlife stadium is and that's the reason I don't root for the giants or the jets And no matter what it should be within the 5 boros of New York city. YES were arrogant high horse NYers and even though its just across the bridge to me I don't care it absolutely matters. Most famous and richest city in the world and you gonna have a team not only not play within the actual city bounds but in another state and sorry if you're from jersey but that is literally a Meme state so it's an even bigger slap in the face and it's in the middle of nowhere. Stadium design is horrible as well.
