America vs Tree

In August of 1976, a brief but epic territorial battle was fought. On one side: the US, South Korea, and her allies; on the other: North Korea. Over... a Korean tree. This, is the story of that fateful battle: Operation Paul Bunyan

Historical overview:
Occurred in August 1976, in the “Joint Security Area” of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea. Basically there was a poplar tree blocking line of sight between a United Nations Command checkpoint and an observation post near “The Bridge of No Return.” The North Koreans said it was planted by their leader at the time, Kim Il-sung.
Part 1 of the video: August 18: small team of Korean military, and a UN Command team and of about 13 personnel, were sent to prune the tree. 15 North Korean military came out, watched for a bit, sent for and got reinforcements, demanded the pruning stop, and then attacked. The South Korea/UNC were injured, and two American commanders were axed to death.
Part 2 of the video: Operation Paul Bunyan (named after a mythical American lumberjack) was the South Korean/American response, a wild show of force: 23 American and South Korean vehicles with 16 military engineers with chain saws, accompanied by two 30-man security platoons from the Joint Security Forces (pistols and axes), another vehicle with a massive machine gun on it, (aimed at the bridge but we can fudge it), another group building rafts on the nearby river in case evac was needed, and then ALSO a 64-man Korean special forces brigade with clubs who were trained in taekwondo... who also then pulled out a bunch of machine guns. And some had claymores strapped to their chests. Cobra helicopters circling overhead, B-52 bomber fortresses, F-4’s, other fighter jets, and even more (trucks etc.) waiting at the edge of the demilitarized zone ‘just in case.’

Fun fact: This is actually true, there was a tree in the DMZ on the north korean side and they didn’t want the tree there so the put 3 operations there 2 failed and 1 completed and they used alot of grenades to get it down.

The US wanted to remove a tree in the DMZ. They sent out 3 men with axes to chop it down. The North Koreans murdered them. So on the next operation, the USA sent in tanks and trucks to destroy the tree. B-52 bombers with nuclear bombs were put on high alert.

They didn't have axes. The people that made this video were poorly informaed and this entire comment section has nodiea what happened. The soldier were sent their to trim the outer branches. There were civilians with them to help. The NKs then showed up and proceeded to attack them with knives, crowbars, and metal bats. They killed one US soldier after she jumped over a bridge and they beat him on the ground. The soldiers buddy jumped over to try and save him but missed and fell into a blindspot in a ditch where he was rushed by a squad of NKs. The footage shows the NKs down their for a few mins, another NK squad comes over and watches, loud painful screaming is heard, the 1st squad then comes out and hands the weapons to the 2nd squad who then continue to torture the soldier. More NK soldiers gather around to watch. The American soldier eventaully dies. All SK soldiers and civilians, along with the few US soldiers were unarmed. They dropped their axes and trimmers the second the NKs showed up in hopes to not provoke them. The torture was the reason the UN sent an army. The saying goes "fuck around and find out". In the end it was an uncalled for a brutal torture and murder of unarmed US soldiers, and the malling of unarmed SK civilians and soldiers.

M60 Patton tank belonging to the United States. ground-to-air missile deployment Place a lot of self-propelled guns near Panmunjeom. 10 woodcutters. The name of this operation is Operation Paul Bunyan. Since then, the boundaries of Panmunjom have been further strengthened, and the barracks on the other side have been demolished.

In 1976, South Korean and American forces attempted to demolish the Panmunjom tree because it obscured the view of North Korea, and in the process, it collided with North Korean forces, killing two American officers. Eventually, when human casualties occurred, the South Korean and US governments set up an operation to remove trees for fear of a conflict with North Korea, and the operation name 'Paul Bunyan' was derived from this. The operation to remove branches by mobilizing aircraft carriers and special forces was successful, and the attack on the US military ended with an official apology from President Kim Il-sung. In addition, the name of the US camp currently stationed in dmz, Camp Bonifas, was named after one of the US military officers who died at the time. As a citizen of the Republic of Korea, I express my condolences to the young officers who sacrificed for the freedom of the Republic of Korea and thank the Americans who sacrificed themselves to protect the freedom and democracy in distant countries. Our Republic of Korea has received an unforgettable grace from the United States.
