On April 11, 2019, Pope Francis shocked the world by kissing the feet of the government leaders of South Sudan, who for years have been at war among themselves. Nearly four years later, the pope will make an in-person visit to the country, from February 3-5, with that same hope for peace.

I am a South Sudanese based in Brazil. I would say, the leaderships in South Sudan rely on violence to solve socio-cultural, economic and political problems. Intimidation, widespread corruption, the inherent desire to have more influence because of money, unaccountability and irresponsibility among others, are things that are affecting South Sudan. I pray that the presence of the Pontiff can enhance that touch of faith and believe that these two guys and others can see a greater nation than themselves.🖤🙌🙏 🤝

Please get that off your head. South Sudan is no one child because Ethiopia, Uganda and Egypt can also say the same. Dinka and Nuer fought off Arabs since 14th century, ottoman Turks in 1800s and British in 1900s long before modern Kenya existed. we are not servile to anyone that's why we always resisted foreign influences dating back to ancient Kush. only reason we went to Kenya as refugees in 1992 was because Mengistu Haile Mariam's government which was supporting us during civil war got overthrown. Kenya benefited from our displacement as it became centre for UN and other NGOs. roots of southern Sudan problems originates from British southern policy of 1920s meant to keep us uneducated and underdeveloped for they feared we would dominate and inspire the others to resist their colonial ambitions given our pride and resistance against them. this is what Khartoum's Arabs government also tried to use against us but we rebelled. We are starting from scratch unlike other British east African countries.

If any country could claim some credits about South Sudan’s independence, it could be Ethiopia. The most immediate opportunists now … the likes of Kenya, Uganda and their other ilks were just bunch of double faces during the war. They did nothing to support South Sudan. South Sudanese were in Kenya as well as Uganda as refugees but that was because areas on which they stayed were being paid the United Nations and other international humanitarian organizations.

The Pope visit was timely, though it happened at a time when the church especially the Catholic church mainly it's leadership was in bed with the political oligarch who the tormentors of our peoples aspiration. Some of us thought the Pope would have time with young people and listen to our demands from the government...but the church and the government decided to have predetermined audience for the Pope. There are still political prisons like the Abraham Chol is imprisoned with orders of President Kiir. If President Kiir was interested in peace , he should have pardoned political opponents both in prison and in exile.

What makes one an African ? That is the question you all should be asking yourselves. It is just like when you go to the USA you will find people of different ethnicity but they are still Americans. There was a time Ethiopians claim that they were not Africans, there was a time people from Madagascar claimed that they are not Africans. Moors in Mauritania identify with their enthnicity more than their African identify. Has that stopped their heads of state from attending AU meetings? Has that stopped AU headquarters from being built in Adis? If people are more rooted in their enthnicity or tribal identity, it just shows you how they have being educated or socialized or how they have been mis-educated. Nevertheless it does not take away their continental identity. For a Jesuit Chanel that is reporting news I expected them to know that north of Sudan is still on the continent of Africa. Just like Saudi Arabia is still ethnically Arab but still located in Asia
