Most of the time you don't have to. If you fly a lot you can usually either use a "system wide upgrade" from a business class ticket or buy the flight with miles. And they aren't always 10k either, I've seen it for as low as 3k on this route (but rare).

I've been flying AA for business for nearly 25 years. It has continued to get worse year after year. It all seemed to start to really fall off when the America West executives took over US Airways and then took over AA. It's a good airline that could be great but Doug and his executives are not focused on delivering a premier product. They are focused on being just good enough and getting customers from A to B safely. Catering is definitely an area where they just don't care. Dan, I do think the flight attendants were supposed to take off the plastic wrap prior to serving. As always, your video was spot on and well produced. Thank you!

I volubly laugh when I see that an american airline advertising that they are No 1 in the USA... means zero when it comes to the global markets...

The difference no one exposes in forums like these is, those foreign carriers like Air France, British air ways, are subsidized and fully backed by their governments unlike our carries here in the US thus Air France can run a business model at a deficit with barely or no profit, while an American airlines who's raising capital from running its business, private bank loans and stocks sales has to make a profit for their investors and to pay bank loans and creditors even when business is lean and even the few times the U.S. government has help then out, via bail-out loans, they've had to pay it back and with interest, not so in socialist Europe or Asia.

They also need to rely on investors money that is why they made a collaboration with KLM. Alitalia was unprofitable and now bankrupt. For several decades now I have refused to fly U.S. carriers aboard from/to the USA. Foreign carriers just do it better in all classes. For our long haul domestic (it's a large country and with territories outside the mainland) well we simply have no choice and I've chosen to fly domestically as little as possible. Thanks for confirming what I suspected about AA International First Class. Any foreign airline in Business or even Premium Economy would have done a better job.

So for those who have tried this seat: Am I the only one who feels like the seat is too "narrow"? My arms keep falling off to the sides, which is rather uncomfortable. For night flights I actually prefer the business class seat on the 777-300 from AA, the side walls keep my arms in place and are actually a bit more comfortable; if only they had the mattress pad for the business class as well, that would be a perfect seat.

Slippers and jammies on this flight? Nope, they weren't on the catering list. If I hadn't been flying on miles, I would have asked for a refund. As an AA flight attendant for 30 yrs, Doug Parker has been trying to operate AA as a low cost America West. The pride & joy we once had has been beaten out of us over the last 10 yrs. Parker’s is leaving and being replaced by a legacy AA Sr. exec. He has vowed a return AA back to the industry leader we once were. We have already seen a slight overhaul of inflight service, especially in premium cabins. Give us some time to work out the kinks & fly us again. I’m a NYC based purser who flies JFK-LHR and would be thrilled to give you a tour of all the ins & outs of working long haul flights and no candy necessary, but it is always appreciated. 😃

I recently flew from LHR to JFK in Business and was impressed how good the crew were, but the ground staff ("security" and AA) at Heathrow where the worst I have ever experienced! They felt the need to check my boarding pass four times (including the same person twice), determined to find a problem. So unprofessional. LHR is to be avoided if at all possible. We don't have culture issues like Asian carriers, or Command issues like Middle Eastern ones, South American ones. I haven't flown for eight years (internationally). After 911, flying became a more and more unbearable experience for the peasants and chattle; all the way from the queues and suspicious searches, to the impersonal kiosks, to being herded into our assigned holding pens like livestock, and then finally crammed into those chicken cages they call seats: "Here, have some peanuts and don't let your knees knock your teeth out during turbulance." Flying used to be relaxing even for coach class travellers. And then... there are the fellow travellers who are angry, disrespectful, stressed, sleep-deprived and or drunk. If I cannot fly at least first class on long haul flights, then I'll just stay home. And at those prices, it looks like I'm staying home.
