The formation you asked about at around the 4:45 mark is known as a scrum. This is performed by the forward pack who are always quite a bit heavier than the backline. The forward pack or simply forwards, are in the South African context human wrecking balls who now in the modern game are also fast. It is not uncommon for pack weights to tickle the one tonne mark typically coming in at around 870 to 990kg's in top flight rugby. There are 8 per team arranged in a 3/4/1 formation. The scrum is part of structured play known as setpieces. What you see around the 7:55 mark is known as a ruck(ball on the ground) or maul(ball not on the ground, ie ball is held by a player and another or others are contesting possession) and this is part of unstructured play. Traditionally left to forwards because of their sheer physicality, it is in the modern game, more or less a free for all for both forwards and backs(backline) to gain possession or try and gain possession of the ball so as to gain advantage and score. I may stand to be corrected on some of the more technical point of these, but that's more or less the nutshell....

To answer your question @4:50, that is called a (set)scrum, ref calls for it for light offences mostly committed by the team in possession of the ball. The scrum is contested by the forward players of the two teams(positions #1 to #8). The forwards are usually the bigggest players as their jobs requires more mustle than does the backline.

@triggrhappi Жыл бұрын
Our Springboks have also had some rough years which have made the wins so much better. You will often see in Club/League rugby where International players will target each other so that when the time comes to pick the Springbok Squad for the season, half of our best players get "taken out" in league, like the "Super 15" where clubs from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa all play for the League Title.. Kind of like in the NHL clubs where you have players from Russia, France, USA and Canada playing together and then playing for their country against each other when the Olympics comes round. So if a top springbok is playing for an SA club, against a NZ club, the NZ club players will target that one top player so he cant play internationals, its hardcore! So basically.. That shitty tacktick MADE the Springboks tough AF and hardened them ALL!
@leonlucas368 Жыл бұрын
4:55 - It's called a scrum whereby both apposing teams basically try out-muscle the other team to contest for the ball. The team are fed on Braai's and Sadza. And Pap en Vleis. They are also always given the psychological advantage of playing rugby as if they are fighting a war to protect their fellow countrymen. Whenever they play, they always play super physical. Our number 1 opponent the All Blacks from New Zealand have said it was always the heaviest game to play when playing the Springboks because of how physical and attritional our boys make it. Because our Boks don't just tackle, they tackle with their everything as if their very lives depended on it. Which is why they make it hurt. And because the Boks make it hurt, they don't get hurt easily either so it's fantastic. 4:57 That's called a scrum. Basically the forwards numbered one to eight on their shirts are part of the forward pack and they are involved in the scrums and lineouts officially. Lineouts being, ball goes out and an opposition hooker (#2 on his back) throws the ball in to two lines of forwards one line from each team. This enables opposition to contest the lineouts but it also tests the strength and tactics of the forwards packs against each other. Early on in the game, the forwards packs were only used as battering rams in scrums and catchers in lineouts. They never trained to run, that was the job of the backs (#11-15) and then scrumhalf (#9) would connect between the two getting the ball from the forwards and throwing it to the backs. The Flyhalf (#10) is the standard kicker. However, as the game got more professional the forwards would start running as well, the kicker isn't necessarily #10 although he usually is, and basically if a player has the ball he must run it. Lastly, the idea of the guys dotting the ball down over the goal line initially was a variation of soccer or football where you didn't get any points there, that was the place where the Flyhalf would then attempt to kick the ball through the posts over the crossbar. And naturally the further out wide it was the further back the kicker had to stand. However, since the game got more professional the try as it is called, players dotting the ball down over the line, became a way to score as well and since it wasn't easy they gave it a bigger point incentive than the kicks over the posts. So 5 points for a try, 2 points for conversion, kicking the ball through the posts following a try and 3 points each for either a penalty kick or a drop goal. So it's also an amazing simply for how many different ways there are to score.

Pap and vleis! That's what these big boys eat. That's basically meat protein (normally steak or a beef sausage called boerewors (a beef sausage) and a corn meal porridge normally topped with a sauce of tomatoes, onions and chillis (Chakalaka). Classic farmer's breakfast, lunch and dinner... BTW Loved this video! It's 2023 now and we're in the Rugby World Cup final! One of the best rugby world cups ever!

My theory is that it starts with high school. The boys are rough and play with guys from the farms (they are big boys). They mellow down but become aware of their surroundings due to the crime in the country and can run if need be (away or to help). There is a lot of pride in their country and team so there's pressure to perform. They are gentle giants but don't mess with them, or the country's women. My nephew is the VC of his first team in an all-boys school. His skinny butt looks confused in the team pictures. Lol, he will learn. If I remember correctly during the 1995 world cup Jonah Lomu (New Zealand) gave some issues cause he was massive and hard to stop. The S.A. team managed to get him down by 3 of them holding onto him. If there is a will, there is a way and South Africans are really good at finding a solution to a messed-up situation while laughing. P.S. That dome they were doing is called a scrum.

Wanted to say this. Springboks maybe one of the best but All blacks is their stop sign.

True, that’s one way to look at it. The All Blacks have won more, but here’s another way to look at it… both countries are sitting on 3 World Cup wins, so SA won when it mattered most. If you look at NZ records out of the World Cup, you’d expect them to have 5 maybe 6 trophies. As a South African, I can honestly say that when the AB team is working well, they score tries almost at will… but that’s just as true of SA. I really want to see a WC final where both teams are at their peak. It’d be quite the spectacle.

S.A have been the better team of late but the ABs seem to evolve the game with young talent ,although at their own demise sometimes @@pieterrossouw8596

Just remember south africa didn't play many games during apartheid. Other countries didn't want to play against them because of sanctions. So yes the all blacks have the numbers but the springboks didn't play as much. And during that time rugby wasn't seen as a profession in South Africa. It was like a club, players would have normal day jobs and play on the weekend.

The set piece where the forwards are interlocked is called a scrum. The teams push against each other to gain advantage when the ball is placed in the scrum so they can get it out. The loose scrum is called a Ruck, same principal. The ball is kept by a player and the team mates lock in behind him to push the ball and player against the other team. This happens when a tackle is unsuccessful and the ball is kept up by the players. They ruck or wrestle to gain momentum and win the ball.
