I went with a uk academy on a tour of south africa abt a yr ago, played paarl boys and a few other academies over there, and when i tell you they are a different breed believe it, we had some big boys so we edged out the teams we played in the forwards slightly (scrums, lineouts etc...) But the level of athleticism in their backs was ridiculous, we couldnt compete as soon as the ball touched their flyhalf, they ran through us all day. Then after the game they were some of the nicest, most enthusiastic people ive met, absolutely excited to talk with us abt school and rugby in the uk. Great experience.

Rugby culture is South African schools is unreal, there often rivalries between the old schools that go back years and years. On big game days the whole school comes out to support, with the biggest games sometimes being televised too. It’s a wonderful atmosphere - often with old students going back generations. In South Africa the word "college" just means school. So these guys are all high school students aged 16-18 with some of them being 19 years old. None are older than 19

At 2:00 the clip shows Paarl Gimnasium vs Paar Boys High. A yearly rugby match that started in 1915. Both schools have produced Springboks. The whole city and alumni is divided during that weekend. Used to be that the losing team would not dare be wherever the winning team concregate. Good Times.

18 years old or 17 years old, they are first teams or team A's, unless they failed a year they might be 19, but there is an age limit of 19 if I am not mistaken. Essentially the Matrics or year 12 students, here in South Africa what you call college is what we call university rugby. These are high school boys. Sometimes you will have monsters that might even be 16 or 15 in the A team but that's rare in these Schools as there is a large talent pool to choose from.

Man I went to one of the schools repressed here and let me tell you the vibe and energy makes u do some crazy things on the field. Some of the guys I played rugby with are now playing for the national team and provincial teams. The guys are between 16-19 in most of the video.

The headgear some players wear is called a scrumcap. That coupled with a good gum guard decrease the chances of getting concussed which is one of the common rugby injuries. The gum guard helps to absorb the shock of clattering teeth which otherwise more easily effects the brain. These are worn voluntarily. The scrumcap also helps protecting the ears from excessive friction which eventually ends up deforming the earlobes typically of forwards (numbers 1 - 8). Another advantage of using a gum guard is obviously protecting the mouth and teeth. I attended so-called rugby schools in the 80's and 90's. Didn't have much of a choice since they were closest to home...... unless if I wanted to attend a girls' school ;) We started playing rugby in grade 1 (6 turning 7). The second, third, fourth, fifth choice schools were all rugby schools - I think you get the idea.

The head covering is called a scrum cap. Its main reason is to help stop you getting “cauliflower ears”, check out the ears of some players that aren’t wearing one. Also, in extreme cases, from your ear being ripped off.

It seems to me that when an event or an institution or an award is named after an individual (say a Nobel prize) it is appropriate to know their name correctly and something of their history. Dr Craven is on record opposing professional sport and multi-racial teams. He is also on record promoting skills development of any Rugby player though funding and events that allow opportunity to compete and to display their skills. So what I am suggesting is that he was human and his views shifted over time and he {like all of us) had some cognitive dissonance. He certainly played a great role in promoting the sport but I believe it would be a dishonour to portray his life as different to his own beliefs, public statements and choices at various times in his life.

Some of the older English-language schools in South Africa have college in their name but they are still only high schools. Most of the players are 17 or 18 with here and there an exeptional 16 year-old. The current Springbok flyhalf, Handre Pollard, competed in three Junior World cups so he was probably in the 1st team from when he was 16.

It’s a different game.. the defensive line is built to stop players sacking the QB. The defensive backs are much more athletic than a rugby back rower but again.. they don’t have to play 80 mins. With the way rugby is going, it’s becoming more like NFL with the amount of cards and penalties 😂

High School boys, every last one. "College" is used to describe many schools in Southern Africa, it just means "place of learning". What you call College we call University or just "Uni". All these boys will be between the ages of 13 and 18. I guess 7th/8th grade to 12th by the US system. Also bare in mind, rugby is a fluid sport, there are no where near as many stoppages as there are in American Football. The flow of the game is much more like soccer. These boys go hard from starting whistle to ending. They are beasts and have stamina to back it up. We had an American Football player come and try to play rugby with us (club rugby) and he just couldn't keep up. He had the skill and power but couldn't fire on all cylinders for an entire game, by half time he was ready to pass out. The "helmet" is called a scrum cap and exists only to protect the ears of the forwards in the scrum. Before scrum caps were implemented people literally would have their ears ripped off in the scrum sometimes and tearing/bleeding was pretty much happening in every game. The offer very little protection outside of keeping the ears tucked and safe. I don't think they were even invented to protect players as much as to prevent stoppages. Rugby players are hard core and are well known to play with broken ribs, arms, wrists, noses and just about anything else you can grit your teeth through the pain for. I remember our rugby captain in high school was awarded man of the match after scoring 4 tries in a tense match, he had 3 broken ribs, a sprained wrist and a concussion by the end of the game but did not once step off the field. He collapsed 5 mins after the game and an ambulance was called. "My team was counting on me" was all he had to say when he came back to school on Monday, our games were on the weekends. THAT is rugby!

These gentlemen are between 14 and 16. The most prestigious rugby schools are Parl gym, Grey High, Grey college and Ronde Bosch. My boys are big. When I use to play back in the day I played school rugby and club rugby at 100kg and leg wise breaking 12seconds and there were bigger and faster boys on my team. This is what we do from the start, we don't get a dummy (pacifier) we get a size 4 Gilbert.

How old are they? In South Africa we commence school in the year that we turn 6 years of age. After 12 years, final (matriculation) year at school occurs when we turn 18 years of age. In high school, the First (top) rugby team will have players of 18, 17 and on rare occasions 16 years of age - exceptionally talented pupils will be promoted to play for their schools First team even though they are not in their final school year. There are 2 levels of rugby in the national schools. First group are the schools who are very serious about the sport. They are being trained from around 9 years if age all the way through school till year 12. Second group are trained by teachers etc who only train each season. The difference is that group one are trained over 10 years and have professional trainers. Hence the difference between the 2 groups. Top 4 are Grey College Bloemfontein, Paarl Gymnasium, Paarl Boys both in Cape Town and Paul Roos Gymnasium Stellenbosch Cape Town. The rest of the ranking schools are across the country and professionally trained.

Players who have suffered concussion wear scrum caps to avoid the reoccurence of further concussions while playing. As play evolves into more organized structures, defense becomes more aggressive, which leads to high-speed collisions that can result in concussions. Tackle laws have been changed to bring the level of the tackle below shoulder height, but the speed of the game can result in desperate attempts to stop an attack which leads to high tackles and stiff arm tackles or even no arm tackles which can cause damage to both attacker and defender. When a squad system(23 players to a squad with 15 on the field during play) was introduced to ensure play would speed up, by having fresh players come on when key players tired, injuries became more prominent. That's what professionalism brought to the game.

We do not have special rugby schools in SA .. all schools have rugby teams that play school leagues.. Hilton College is a high school .. those boys would be around 18 years old

This is high school rugby bud. Colleges are private schools here in SA. So these guys are generally 18 and under
