VH1 chopped the heck out of these “Best of Bandstand” episodes, but even edited and kinescoped, at least they gave us an ever-so-brief glimpse into the rarely seen world of late 60’s Bandstand.
This was during the brief time when Bandstand struggled to get dancers on the show. As you can see, there are far fewer kids dancing today vs most other episodes, especially compared to the packed-in studios of Philadelphia and the early Hollywood years. Why didn’t kids want to dance on Bandstand in 1969? Changing times?, changing music?, changing tastes?, or maybe it just wasn’t “cool” anymore? Not sure. This period did not last long, however, as the dancefloor was crowded again by 1970.
Happy Birthday to @dancer don, Don Sanuskar!!! Don can be seen dancing in this episode, most prominently when he danced with Robin Miller to “Jean” in the Spotlight Dance. Have a great birthday tomorrow Don!
Billboard Hot 100 today:
1) Sugar, Sugar - The Archies
2) Honky Tonk Women - The Rolling Stones
3) Green River - CCR
4) A Boy Named Sue - Johnny Cash
5) Easy To Be Hard - Three Dog Night
7) Get Together - The Youngbloods
8) Jean - Oliver
10) I Can’t Get Next To You - The Temptations
19) Put A Little Love In Your Heart - Jackie DeShannon
39) Commotion - CCR
Thank you for watching and have a Groovy, virus-free day!

They were huge and about to get bigger with the Cosmos Factory LP (that I must have played hundreds of times the next year), but "Commotion" was one of the last songs I'd want to hear while sitting in the gallery on American Bandstand. "Down on The Corner" and "Bad Moon Rising" came out not long after and before "Commotion" which was one of my least favorite CCR tunes.

Thanks Aaron! Oh the times they were a'changin'. A few regulars around, but not many. Don, Karen, Frank and Robin were doing their best Charleston! With Sugar Sugar in AB's top 10, I thought we were going to watch Frank Vanderpuil stomp and spin his way thru the entire song as he has previously done. Except for our regulars, these dancers were kind of boring. One guy even appeared to be dragging his girl across the studio. Hairstyle changes, clothing styles all leading up to the very boring 70's. Hold onto your butts. What a treat to see Don and Robin in the spotlight dance. They were fabulous!!! Thank you Aaron for our Saturday treat! I hope everyone is finding a way to get their vaccine. Aaron everyone needs to catch your descriptor. Spot on. This was a transitional time for American Bandstand. Set changes, waning number of dancers, and changing tastes in dance show preferences. DCP still maintained a stellar cast of talented artists and, as you indicated, by 1970 Bandstand reinvented itself and was back in the ratings' game. Factoid here: Creedence re-taped their performance in color to replace an earlier version that was damaged.

I remember when VH-1 aired this (and your assessment is spot on...butchered, indeed!). This was not only a transitional period for AB but for much of music as well. That said, as Dancer Don correctly assessed, Dick Clark wisely made sure the show kept up with the times with the various set changes (this then-new set would be changed four years later and many more times before the show left ABC in 1987). CCR's appearance (their only one for AB) was part of a month-long series of featured acts - the Association and Stevie Wonder were each given their own special features and Dick continued this over the years (my favorite is when DC did one for Michael Jackson in the summer of 1972).

Aaron, thx so much for putting this episode up! It puts things more into perspective, as I remember telling you I missed seeing this when VH1 had their AB marathon. Not much I can add to the comments I made from the separate clips you uploaded from this episode, except that this is the first time I saw Dick open the show with a performance from the guest! I guess he was feeling the changes with the new set, new theme song, new logo. This was a really cool episode & makes me wonder what VH1 edited out in order to make this a half hour episode. Besides CCR, the music is so eclectic here. That Top 10 is quite interesting, considering it covered almost all the hit genres of the time. I did notice the room wasn't as packed as it usually was, but I know that soon changed when 1970 came in & the changes started to settle & make more sense. Great upload Aaron. Now I'm gonna go & look at the partial color Top 10 clip you put up from this episode. Lol

Yes, the Top 40 Pop chart *was* eclectic and for that reason listening to the radio in those days was great. Without turning the dial, you got pop, rock (hard rock, acid rock), Motown, vocal music (such as Tom Jones, in the Top Ten that week), instrumental ("Theme from Romeo and Juliet"), bubble-gum (the Archies, the Cuff-Links), a little Gospel (Edwin Hawkins Singers), even a little reggae (Desmond Dekker), Beatles and Stones, and other consistent hit-makers like CCR, the Guess Who, and 3 Dog Night. Good music was everywhere.

A color version of this survives I think. There's a clip of Dick interviewing CCR in color and you showed old clips of this episode from the 40tj Anniversary special. I don't know if the tape of this episode is degraded or damaged. But it isn't easy to find VTRs that can play a 2" quad tape if it does.

@YCDTI
@YCDTI 3 жыл бұрын
Yep, I added a few seconds of color to the top 10 broadcast when I posted it last time. It would’ve been too cumbersome to add this time. Also, to answer your other question, the software I use to color these doesn’t allow any input from the user. The software (DeOldify) makes its best guess based on the shade of the black and white. I wish I could input some info to make it more authentic but alas. For now, we get what we get.

Ironic that after DIY colorized clips we get a b&w color-era episode from vh1 which had provided episodes in pristine color. I love "Love American Style", my 8th-grade classmates and I thought that was a cool show. Bummer they didn't get to dance to "Lay Lady Lay" lol. Happy birthday Don, is that shot of him in the spotlight dance the one that Andrew Haberman used to colorize? Unusual we had 2 couples in the spotlight instead of 3.

I'm not sure what Aarons plans are but most have already been colorized. You'll have to ask Aaron. Colorization is still an imperfect process and the quality of the colrization or how it renders depends on the quality of the clip.

Thanks @Keith Idota for the birthday wishes. You’re right, there is some irony thrown into the color, b&w and colorized mix. But after the sale of DCP the ownership moved forward with other ventures and left American Bandstand behind. What remains is an incomplete archive of video tape to film preservation in a pre-digital era. I wish I could recall the sourced interview with Dick Clark where he recanted personally rescuing AB episodes destined for the trash. Not sure what the status of the Vh1 episodes is. I can tell you that less than a dozen of the 1960’s episodes ever made it to the half hour Vh1 rebroadcasts. Lucky to have saved what was transferred to non-degrading kinescopes.
