Living in this country is a blessing. I traveled all over the world, I like the us, but beeing able to breath fresh air, drinking water of the highest quality, having acess to really healthy food is a quality for live you could dream of. On Donnerkogel I met my late husband 50 years ago....But I thank god, I was born in this country every day. I am able to live in peace and a very healthy environment... what a blessing..." I am from Austria" sobg from Reinhard Fendrich..

You seem to have the same(ish) "fear of heights" as I have. That's why I tend to call it "fear of hitting the ground unchecked" - because that's what I actually fear.

As an Austrian who climbed a bit earlier as an amateur, I had a trick to "survive" such fear spots: Just focus on the next 50cm in front of you (the ladder) and look at only that - don't look down or to the landscape....after you have taken such climbing areas, you can then have a look to the landscape.....
@MouseGeist
@MouseGeist 5 ай бұрын
My fear wouldn't let me focus on anything other than just the next 50cm in front of me anyways. I got such a tunnel vision, it felt like I couldn't see anything other than what's directly in front of me. It's terrifying for sure, but that adrenaline rush is what makes it such a great experience. Unheimlich, aber leiwand.

It sounds to me like you really need to visit the Alps one day. :) I know you have mountains over there too, but the Alps beats most mountains anywhere. It is a huge area though, and many countries have access to it. In many places you can drive quite high up and then take cable cars to get higher (I prefer that before climbing). The view anywhere in the Alps is often insanely beautiful, and you are right about the air - stay overnight in one of those small, cosy mountain towns and sleep like a baby. You will get exhausted even without climbing, just hiking is likely challenging enough. After a rustic meal, some beer/wine, belive me - you´ll sleep nicely.

Alps in Monaco ??? Seriously ? Monte Carlo is right by the Mediterranean Sea, there is no real mountains there, only some cliffs and certainly not in Monaco where everything is built up. Otherwise, everything else is right. I live in French Alps, near Geneva, and wrote a tourist guide for motorcyclists about Alps, toured all these 6 countries from west to east, from France to Slovenia and back, ten years ago...

I see you have a reply from Italy. He's right - there are several other mind-blowing vertigo activities in Switzerland, Italy, and elsewhere. From via ferrata's to high altitude swinging rope bridges. Might be a good idea to get some wall climbing practise at your local suitable gym before you come over to Europe, to at least get a little "acclimatised".

I’ve done many alpine hikes (up to T5, if you are familiar with the Swiss Hiking Scale) and there are definitely scary moments. I’m also a sports climber, indoor and outdoor. But I don’t like Klettersteige/via ferratas, ie, what this video showed. On alpine hikes, you have solid ground under your feet (sure, might be sand or grass). As a sports climber, you mostly know you can slip and fall and nothing bad happens, including being able to bail and be let down safely (exceptions apply). On via ferratas neither of those tends to apply (sure, you’re not going to die). I have some fear of heights like most people do. But I am good at focussing on the ground in front of me and not looking down the mountain.

That would be so exhilarating, I saw the ladder & thought I'd be up that like a rat up a drain pipe. 9 x out of 10 my friends would send me in to do the crazy stuff. If I survived they would give it a crack themselves. I've done some crazy stuff, but that would be a highlight.

I'm one of those weird ones. Looking down is fine. Not an issue. At all. More a case of 'Look how far we've gone / Look what I've achieved' mentality. Looking up, on the other hand? The whole world closes in and reminds me as to a combo of 'Look how much further we have to go' and how damned small and insignificant I am. Disconcerting, to say the least. Even in town (or in Wellington, our capital city), looking up at the large, tall buildings around. Very queezy stomach, quickly coming headache. Sweaty/clammy palms.

As an Austrian, I am used to such views. I live in Styria where we also have very high mountains and therefore a lot of mountain roads. The only difference is that our mountains aren't so rugged but more round, that's because the rock is harder and weathers more slowly. But that only applies to the region in which I live. I'm a passionate motorcyclist and during the warmer seasons whenever it suits me It's possible to travel in the mountains (all over Austria and neighboring countries) and I'm often on the move very quickly. After almost 30 years of riding motorcycles, I've learned to concentrate on what I'm doing at the moment and nothing else, i.e. on the road and the traffic. Not on the landscape or other things! I only do that during breaks at particularly beautiful viewpoints! Some people would say I drive way too fast and dangerously, but from my point of view everything is controlled because I only drive fast where I have good access to the road When I'm on a road I'm not familiar with, I drive much more carefully, but it's not that I don't know the feeling of fear, it's more like controlling my own instincts without turning off my brain!
