“The northern myth that the confederate soldier went to the battlefield to keep slavery is just that a myth. Their letters and diaries in the tens of thousands reveal again and again that they fought their southern homeland was invaded.” - William C. Davis I can assure you, that the gallant hearts that throb beneath its sacred folds, will only be content, when this glorious banner is planted first and foremost in the coming struggle for our independence. - John Bell Hood “For my part, I have no hesitancy from the first that, right or wrong, alone or otherwise, I go with Virginia.” - JEB Stuart “I would rather be a private in Virginia’s army than a general in any army that was going to coerce her.” - JEB Stuart

Yep, they said later it was "states rights" but if you read every Southern states Declaration of Secession, the upholding of slavery is mentioned as the reason for secession. It is the only reason. Not over tariffs, currency rates, roads, or anything else. To say it was "states rights" is a lie. Is just a handy go-to because they were later ashamed to say they fought to preserve slavery.

The country was evolving its beliefs and implementing federal equality laws to federally enforce the abolishment of slavery and slave labor and the south wanted to reject federal laws from being enforced on their state territory and thats why claim it was a territorial war. The south wanted to protect their rights to continue to slave blacks on their state territory and wanted the north to kick rocks and mind their business. The North said "nope we're going to come onto your state territory and force you to free your slaves", and thats exactly what the North (union states) did to the South confederate states. Kicked their ass and took the chains off their slaves. Now they're back talking about how they'll rise again.

The war wasn’t to free slaves the war was because Abraham Lincoln didn’t want slavery to spread to the west in order to control the black population but stopping the spread scared the south that their main source of income would disappear and a war starting forcing Abraham to free slaves but his ending plan was after the war was to keep the slaves from being citizens and have them deported

FYI 100,000 Free Blacks owned Black slaves in the South during the times of the Civil War..... this coming from a Northerner. As with everything in History no event happenes because of ONE reason the truth is the war was more fought for States Rights Vs Federal Rights, USA was founded in favor of strong State Power and small Federal Power and the North was imposing Federal laws to overtake the souths state laws.For example, the Morrill Tarrif, it was a Tarrif that raised interest rates on Southern goods by a gigantic amount that Southerners were barely making profit( The Nullification Crisis happened because of un constitutional Tarrifs) , another reason is that Northern Merchants were aleanating the South.I can go on and on such as Uncle Tom's Cabin, the raid at Harper's Ferry etc . Bottom line the South felt that there Constitutional rights were being threatened .Slavery itself could not be a main cause in a world which had been phasing out slavery ever since the Empire of Portugal started it in the late 18th century and in a country where it was slowly but surely being voted out by STATE. Those thousands didn't need to die .God Bless the South Deo Vindice .
@joellaz9836

Very few blacks owned slaves. The ones who did own slaves was only due to fact that slaves who were freed by their masters ended up buying their children, wife or a family member or a close friend after they became free. I have read many, many slave narratives. But I have yet to read one that states that they saw blacks owning a plantation or even having slaves that worked for them. I have read a slave narrative where there was description of a Native American owning slaves (and they were described as being far more humane and kind slaveholders than the whites). But none that describe blacks.

Can anyone tell me why the North was keen on ending slavery? My gut tells me (unfortunately) it isn't because the majority of northerners cared whether blacks down south were free or not. There has to be an alternative reason.
@kuwinsitall
@kuwinsitall 7 жыл бұрын
It's a little complex, but I'll do my best to be brief. Basically, the South completely depended upon slavery for their economy. Lincoln's election freaked them out so much that they seceded, fearing he would outlaw slavery. He bent over backwards saying they could keep it if they rejoin. They felt no need to as they didn't trust the North, and few new slave states were being added....and the South thought the Senate would tilt against slavery. The North was mostly motivated to preserve the Union, not end slavery. The border states of Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia and Maryland were even allowed to keep slaves through the war. Once the war was on, Lincoln felt that it was too late to go back and sought to end it by war's end. Emancipation Proclamation made it official. That being said, not all Northerners were "good guys" that were pro-black rights. Many black soldiers were mistreated in the North by their white counterparts and many blacks were lynched in New York City during draft riots. On the other hand, only 12% of Southerners had slaves, so most average people down there weren't monsters or anything, they were mostly fighting for their home states. The South did secede to keep the institution of slavery though, it is in every states' declaration of secession documents. Whew. A bit nuanced, but there you have it. I was administrator of a Civil War Battlefield a few years ago so I often told people this. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but why did Lincoln press on with the Emancipation Proclamation?
@kuwinsitall
@kuwinsitall 7 жыл бұрын
Kush MasterB it was always something he wanted down the line, but he was never willing to risk the union for it. he wanted it to happen naturally or through law, with possible payouts to the south to make it happen. but once the war was on against his wishes, he was basically saying "fuck it, might as well now."

Bleed Green Northern white men didn't like slavery being extended to the territories. They would become poor whites like Southern poor whites if huge plantations loaded with slave labor undercut their prices and kept wages low for any jobs. That's why California and Kansas didn't want slavery. Slaveowners get an unfair advantage over free citizens, plus slaveowners look down on any people who work for a living--including whites--which creates a negative, backward culture. Yankee culture is hardworking, upbeat and forward-looking, and slaves did not fit into it at all. Immigrants coming to the US to make good lives did not go to the South and also avoided slavery for the same reasons.

Abraham was a Republican, and a Republican Party general view was to abolish slavery, and let’s face it, a huge part of the south’s economy came from slaves. The South saw slavery wasn’t going to survive if they stayed apart of the Union, so they seceded.

It wanted independence because it felt the Union was not going to let it continue to expand slavery's territory indefinitely, and the only thing that was really making slavery profitable was being able to sell slaves. No new territory, no market for slaves. Otherwise the system of forced labor had inherent flaws, including that mechanization was disadvantageous, as was providing education for everyone, including poor whites.

Pretty much this, but also was an institutional element to it. Roughly speaking, The North controlled the House and the South controlled the Senate and the expansion of the country kept raising the thorny issue of adding new states to the Union and upsetting the series of delicate - and ultimately futile - balancing attempts to reach an equilibrium. Additionally, all three branches of government would sequentially fail to resolve the widening divide between North and South. The Executive failed in the guise of weak president after weak president, the Judicial failed due to that one really famous supreme court case about slavery the name of which escapes me right now - basically the court ruled in a way which called into question its impartiality and integrity and 'took sides' with the South. The Legislative failed just by being a bunch of partisan, unwilling to seriously commit to resolve the issues and quell inter-communal violence, pricks.

How is this war about slavery when south didn't need to attack north to keep their law of owning slaves . . . Union didn't want to pull back from their fort and both sides had ambition of one nation where they would rule . . . Those ambitions exist today still but not in favor of uniting but in favor of spliting and if USA didn't have heavy centralized army and gouverment like commies during USSR , USA would split apart because there are states in USA that would do much better economicly speaking if they were not in UNION . Also democracy is very limited if you wan't to pull from union since you need 60%+ of states suporting you to leave . . .

Metkic 94 “We Are Fighting for Independence, Not Slavery”. - Jefferson Davis President of the Confederacy to Edward Kirk “Slavery is a political evil in every country.” -Robert E Lee “I am rejoiced that slavery is abolished. I believe it will be greatly for the interests of the South. So fully am I satisfied of this, as regards Virginia especially, that I would cheerfully have lost all I have lost by the war, and have suffered all I have suffered, to have this object attained.” - Robert E Lee “I have always been in favor of Emancipation.” - Robert E Lee “Let us stand together. We may differ in color, but not in sentiment. Many things have been said about me which are wrong, and which white and black persons here, who stood by me through the war, can contradict.” - Nathan Bedford Forrest “African Americans should have the right to vote.” - Confederate Colonel John Salmon Ford The confederate soldier “Fought because he was provoked, intimidated, and ultimately invaded” -James Webb Born Fighting a History of the Scoth-Irish in America “I was fighting for my home, and he had no business being there” -Virginia confederate Solider Frank Potts List of causes of the Civil War- Harpers Ferry On the night of October 16, 1859, Brown and a band of followers seized the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), in what is believed to have been an attempt to arm a slave insurrection. (Brown denied this at his trial, but evidence indicated otherwise.) They were dislodged by a force of U.S. Marines led by Army lieutenant colonel Robert E. Lee. Brown was swiftly tried for treason against Virginia and hanged. Southern reaction initially was that his acts were those of a mad fanatic, of little consequence. But when Northern abolitionists made a martyr of him, Southerners came to believe this was proof the North intended to wage a war of extermination against white Southerners. Brown’s raid thus became a step on the road to war between the sections. States' Rights The idea of states' rights was not new to the Civil War. Since the Constitution was first written there had been arguments about how much power the states should have versus how much power the federal government should have. The southern states felt that the federal government was taking away their rights and powers. Political power That was not enough to calm the fears of delegates to an 1860 secession convention in South Carolina. To the surprise of other Southern states-and even to many South Carolinians-the convention voted to dissolve the state’s contract with the United States and strike off on its own. South Carolina had threatened this before in the 1830s during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, over a tariff that benefited Northern manufacturers but increased the cost of goods in the South. Jackson had vowed to send an army to force the state to stay in the Union, and Congress authorized him to raise such an army (all Southern senators walked out in protest before the vote was taken), but a compromise prevented the confrontation from occurring. Perhaps learning from that experience the danger of going it alone, in 1860 and early 1861 South Carolina sent emissaries to other slave holding states urging their legislatures to follow its lead, nullify their contract with the United States and form a new Southern Confederacy. Six more states heeded the siren call: Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Others voted down secession-temporarily. When President Lincoln called for Volunteers to invade the south, six southern states voted to join the Confederacy. The issue of slavery The burning issue that led to the disruption of the union was the debate over the future of slavery. Secession brought about a war in which the Northern and Western states and territories fought to preserve the Union, and the South fought to establish Southern independence as a new confederation of states under its own constitution. Most of the states of the North, meanwhile, one by one had gradually abolished slavery. A steady flow of immigrants, especially from Ireland and Germany during the potato famine of the 1840s and 1850s, insured the North a ready pool of laborers, many of whom could be hired at low wages, diminishing the need to cling to the institution of slavery. Child labor was also a growing trend in the North. The agrarian South utilized slaves to tend its large plantations and perform other duties. On the eve of the Civil War, some 4 million Africans and their descendants toiled as slave laborers in the South. Slavery was interwoven into the Southern economy although only a relatively small portion of the population actually owned slaves. - History . net
