Another great report - really enjoying the style, very easy watching and a decent length. Think this shows what epic was designed to do and get impressive and interesting games in a relatively small space. Interesting changes in dynamic with the flanking attacks (and gave the battle quite a lot of depth) - been inspired to get one of the starter sets, but only painted up one sprue so far so still a way to go 🙂

Awesome feedback and thanks for the support, it is much appreciated - the painting was a bit daunting at first, especially when you see all that plastic in the starter sets, but I just set goals to get so much done and then do something else for a bit to break things up before coming back to it etc and have slowly got there. Best of luck with it 👍🏻👍🏻

Great report again - thanks very much. The style is really good and you have the balance just right re total video length, explaining movements etc and showing the dice rolling. Please keep them coming. Minis are excellent as well by the way.

Hugely enjoyed thanks. When I first saw this scenario, I thought it was too big for my table, but in Epic and on a 4’ x 4’ table it looks very do-able. I note Warlord are going to announce a new Epic project on Wednesday!

Fantastic, glad you liked it and thanks for the support. I think that scenario is probably the biggest I can go on a 4x4 and I did slim down a couple of the Brigades to make it work. I think I’m going to upscale to a 6x4 for the next one and see how that goes. I hadn’t heard about the new Epic release….intriguing!

Great and very useful video! A question: You don't follow the exact deployment suggestions from the booklet. For instance, for the Union first brigade they suggested 3 regiments of infantry. Is there a special reason for that? Thanks. Paolo
@Roll-Some-Dice9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support Paolo, much appreciated 👍🏻👍🏻 I basically scaled the forces down to suit what I had painted and I was also playing on a smaller battle mat, so no special reason. 😎👍🏻

at 4:30 are you shooting the rear of the confederate? if so you get to reroll misses
@Roll-Some-Dice Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for the comment. I’m not sure that’s the correct time stamp you reference, but if it’s where I’m thinking in Union turn 4, then my understanding is that you only get enfilading fire re-rolls for shooting at the rear or front if the target unit is in March column. The Confederates where in Line so enfilading would only count to fire from a flank position (page 53 of rulebook). Let me know if I’ve mis-read that. Many thanks

Excellent battle report; very informative and entertaining to watch. It seems that a lot of people use 3 stands of infantry to represent a regiment instead of 5 stands. Did you do that for table space? I was thinking that I would do the same so that I don't feel too overwhelmed on getting enough painted to play. I plan to paint them, as you suggested, at a leisurely pace so that I'm not burnt out. What are you using for the round bases? Good idea to make them stand out.
@Roll-Some-Dice Жыл бұрын
Hey there and thanks for the support, it’s much appreciated. There’s another video on my channel where I go through how I organise my regiments and why etc, so probably worth checking that out if you haven’t already - but basically it was to save space and reduce the amount of painting, so you’re spot on. For the round bases I just use spare ones I’ve got from Bolt Action as they’re quite thin, so work quite well at this small scale. You can get them from Warlord Games, but shop around. Best of luck 👍🏻👍🏻
@dawnfire82 Жыл бұрын
Three bases scales pretty well for the other sizes, also. Two for small units, one for tiny units. Four or five for large units. Also, according to the Black Powder rules, a regular sized unit should 'normally' have a frontage of 200-250mm. Epic scale infantry bases are 60mm wide. Therefore, you need four of them to fit into this window. Four is kind of awkward and puts the command base off-center. Fortunately, the rules further say that the actual frontage is not important, so long as all the units in the force scale with one another correctly. So three is convenient.

What a battle! Another very well done report. It shows that this game can get pretty exciting. It was nice to see flanking, cavalry and such. What was the reasoning behind charging the Confederate left flank across the river? When I saw you do that I thought you were just trying to get them all killed for some reason. =)
@Roll-Some-Dice2 жыл бұрын
Ha! Excellent comments and much appreciated 👍🏻 yea I think I was basically sacrificing them on the basis they would hold the Union right flank for a couple of turns until the Cavalry Brigade arrived which worked in the end! Generals have to be ruthless at times 😂

Great painting, great board/terrain, and also a great batrep. Do you play alone, or is that just the theme of the batreps? Me and a friend bought the starter set, and split the content. I got the CSA part, and have been painting for what feels like forever, so much content in the starter. Also added a few extra brigades, but still have much left to paint.

Hey there and thanks for the comments/support, much appreciated. I sort of fell into solo games whilst practicing etc and found it could be quite fun! I do play at a local club, but no other ACW players unfortunately. I’ve been painting the stater set and other additional units for about 18 months, but you can still play smaller brigade level games, just reduce the distances and size of board etc. hope it goes well for you 👍🏻

@@Roll-Some-Dice Hi and thank you for your respons. I am a veteran painter, mostly Warhammer, and Bolt Action, but also a load of other board and strategy games. I bought the core set and a few other early units for ACW, and thought that it would be a quick and easy paint job. Well no becouse apart from eyes on the models, they are pretty detailed. And i cant do a quick base, wash and done - job on them, they need to look as good as i can make them. So i have much left to paint. And your paint on your units look great, its hard painting small miniatures. Well it took me 2 videos before i understood that you were playing solo, and no harm in that, you do it well! Question, will you be doing a bigger battle, a homebrew reanactment of a part of a bigger battle not in the intro booklet? Chears and happy wargaming! sub from me.
@Roll-Some-Dice Жыл бұрын
@@Brissebrajan ha…yes I was the same, small minis = faster painting, but like you I like to have them looking good! I’m doing a bit of research on a larger reenactment, but need more units and perhaps an opponent due to managing filming, narrating and playing etc. Cheers for the sub 😎😎

@@Roll-Some-Dice Hi again, i am back, and i have done some more painting, still not finished with the starter box, and i might have ordered the new(er) gettysburg box. I have managed a few games though, and went back to this video too see if we made any mistakes. I also wanted to look at the broken units rules. I find the rule extremely punishing (30:14 into your video), that the whole brigade goes away. I somehow understand the rules for it, but i would like to think that fresh regiments in the same brigade would try to do remain and get engaged. How do you feel about this rule? is it "balanced" or would you consider "house rule" so that un damaged units / fresh regiments stay? There is support for this in the historic record on many occations during the war, for both scenarios. routed units making fresh units demoralized, but also that the fresh units find their grit and fight harder seeing the situation and acting with even more effort.
@Roll-Some-Dice8 ай бұрын
@@Brissebrajan hi there and thanks for the question. The rules for Broken Brigades do allow the remaining regiments to withdraw slowly away from the battle until they leave the table edge. They can’t receive any orders or use their initiative and they make a ‘retirement move”. I don’t do this as it can be quite messy and those regiments can’t do much else anyway, albeit thematically it is ok. I’m not sure it’s unbalanced, it makes you have to think about rotating regiments off the firing line so your Commander can attempt to rally and I found that as I’ve played more, you become more aware of this and adjust tactics accordingly - hope that helps 👍🏻

Thanks for the video, great report. I particularly liked the two disorder markers for disorderly retreat. A small point on the rules, when attacked from behind or the flanks you only get half the dice, at least half is supposed to be to the front, whether or not the unit is engaged to the front.
