Half of the Monarchs Guard annual service is on operations and the other is ceremonial. When Coldstream Guards are concerned its the 1st Battalion and No.7 Company which are the two ceremonial as such units for them. Grenadiers its Nijmegan Company (the first of foot they were, but their rivals Coldstream (both being English regiments) is the oldest in the whole army.

There's a common misconception that British people don't care or understand what our military do. Nothing could be further from the truth. Do we take them for granted, yes to a point. But that's because we have high expectations and demands built on past standards. It's been that way for centuries.

I was a police dog handler here in the UK. Things may have changed as a I retired 10 years ago but in general we do not duel train search and patrol dogs. German shepherds and Malinois are generally used for patrol work and other breeds for more specific searching: drugs explosives money etc. Our search dogs are very rarely duel substance trained. i.e. a dog would not be trained for drugs AND explosives. It is very much an either or situation. In answer to your question the military dogs cover military airfields, our civilian airfields are covered the UK Border Force / HM Customs. and the police cover almost everything else. I myself worked German Shepherds for police patrol work and a Labrador for explosive detection.

The reasoning for not using protection breeds for specialised detection work, as explained to me, was that protection breeds are perceived as aggressive and threatening by the general public which cisnt good in public scenarios like airports and train stations where you want people to pass close by without them thinking they are going to get their face bitten off, protection breeds can also be provocative in other situations, taking a malinois into a house or car to do a search is more likely to attract unwanted and possibly threatening attention than cute looking springer or lab.

If I remember correctly, all British armoured vehicles built since 1948 have the ability to make tea...its actually called a 'Boiling Vessel' and can be used to heat up food as well as make tea. Some time in the last few years the US Army adopted Boiling Vessels for their vehicles. All be need to do now is to get them to drink tea as well!

I remember as a child on trips to the seaside we always passed the famous Golf Balls at RAF Fylingdales, for over 3 decades they were the only landmark for miles. The "Golf balls" were ballistic early warning radar systems built during the cold war to warn of attacks from the Soviet Union, when the Iron Curtain finally fell they were sadly demolished in 1992, and a more modern station was built.

Hi girls. The first royal guard was a regiment of Cromwell's army that lay down their weapons in front of the returning King Charles II, & then picked them up again in his support becoming the King's Guard. This was on Horse guards Parade, where trooping the colour takes place every year on the monarch's official birthday still. The colour is the flag you see being carried. Each regiment has one & the gold decorations you see on it is an embroidered name of each war battle or action that regiment has taken part in over the years, many commencing in the 17th & 18th centuries. Occasionally new colours are needed, when there is no more room on the flag, they get worn out, units are merged & new regiments created. The colour is trooped through the ranks of soldiers so that they recognise their own & appreciate the history of the Regiment. It is sort of sacred like the Eagles of the Roman legions of ancient days. Great video girls. Thanks for your Respect. Cheers Dan.

The RAF have their own police within its service. Plus, they also do check for contraband, as well as check luggage of service personnel. The RAF transport aeroplanes do have a nickname. That being 'Crab Air'. Plus, the seating arrangements are either sideways, or rear facing in their passenger aeroplanes. Not like commercial aeroplanes. It's a safety protocol. Have served in Cyprus doing UN duties in 1985. That border is the real deal, and can be just a small wall. The one thing you cannot do, ever. Is a to take any photographs. Just a small fact about the challenger 2 tank, which is due to be replaced by the challenger 3 in the mid 2020's. During the war in Iraq, a Challenger 2 was subjected to over 30 direct hits from hand held anti tank weapons, there were no casualties and the tank was still operational. To date a Challenger tank has never been destroyed by enemy fire and only once by friendly fire, with no casualties recorded. Great video, so nice to see mutual support from across the Atlantic, we are truly better together. It makes a nice change from being lambasted about a colonial past that had nothing to do with present day Brits, by people that clearly know nothing about the history of the British Empire. keep these videos coming, they're great.

As an RAF cadet I used to spend a week every year on an active airfield. One time it was a fighter base, and every second of every day there were two fully armed and fuelled Lightning interceptors sitting on the end of a runway ready for take-off. On at least two occasions (I didn't know what was taking off at night) they were scrambled and immediately replaced by another pair. Pilots told us that sometimes they flew every day, shepherding Russian bombers which were eavesdropping on our radar and testing reactions on the edge of British airspace over the North Sea.

There's a few things I noticed here.. Haha, yes the tea making story is true- In tanks and vehicles there's a BV (boiling vessel). Tea and Coffee is part of the ration packs (or "MRE"s in the US) given to soldiers to sustain themselves. Culturally, Tea is very important to us Brits but technically it's more than just a drink. It cools you in a hot climate and warms you up in the cold. It's a great mood lifter ! BVs are found in many military vehicles. Water is saved, used for washing, shaving and drinking. That" knife" is a bayonet. It sits sheathed on the belt on what's known as a "frog". On the bit where the soldier hasn't gotten to fire his rifle yet.. It may be the case for that particular segment of his training, but by the time of his attending the ITC *Infantry Training Centre* in Catterick, he will already be very familiar with his personal weapon system. Very early on, prior to trade training, he will have been instructed on how to use a rifle. Each recruit will have passed a Weapons Handling Test and trained on ranges. Safety is paramount, so he will have to have completed these assessments prior to going on exercise. An often overlooked thing is that each soldier, regardless of what "job" they do is trained as an infanteer first. Medics, Engineers, Vets, Drivers- They all pass the same basics of knowing what to do in the field. My friend CT said in her book- "I'm a soldier carrying a medical kit, not a medic carrying a rifle". Any specialisation is something that goes on top of what a soldier already does. Guards, like the Sentinels, are known for their ceremonial roles- but above all, they're trained for warfighting and peacekeeping roles.

I thought this was really interesting-never really thought about its job being also to look into space to protecting satellites/coms /connectivity as well as protecting the land/ people from a direct strike. So today I've learned something from you. Thanks ladies Xx

The boiling vessel saved the lives of many British tank crews and is considered so essential that a vehicle with a broken boiling vessel is considered unfit for use. the idea is that you don't need to leave your nice armoured box to heat/cook your rations and has the added benefit of leaving you with a pot of boiled water which can be used to make a cup of tea.

Ref Dogs, German Shepherds are use as patrol/attack but nearly any other will be used as sniffer dogs, they work UK military bases or abroad at airports in Iraq/Afghanistan or Cyprus etc. Tanks do have a water boiler BV = Boiling Vessel.

I Was raised in brize Norton it’s a busy base planes land every 30 mins you get used to stopping convos mid sentence for a fly over, it’s a fenced in base yes and the inside even has a bowling alley and nice football pitch. There’s a small festival every year called brizefest which centres around the RAF.

Had a callout to Rescue a girl lost in the Welsh Mountains many years ago (Sad ending 😥) in a Rescue Sea king the main RAF helicopter for Rescue so I jumped into one of the first empty seats up the front opposite the radar room operator, and half way through the flight I noticed the a red flashing light behind the pilots seat and shouted to the Navigator there's a red light flashing and he laughed out loud although most couldn't hear due to the NOISE! in the helicopter and shouted it's the Tea Kettle! it's boiled lol, Another titbit of info most Regiments have changed to old RAF Bases so the have the use of Runways on them, and if someone here can tell me I think all Regiments now have runways for fast deployment, Another titbit of info is the the British forces are training in 10,000 men batches every few months of the Ukrainian Armed forces mainly Army and Navy and you can tell those trained trained in Army tactics on some videos they way the act in the field covering each other and think they look like British soldiers lol and Their Not they are Ukrainian,

Hey guy's, I'm from UK, my dad was a Queens guard. I just wanted to clarify for you on the dogs. The military and the police have these trained dog unit's. The military units deal with the military air bases. So never go to a civilian air port unless for a terrorist situation. It is the police trained dog units that deal with the civilian air port. Bless America we got your back and you've got ours. Awesome... PEACE!!

The RAF also are tasked to escort hijacked or potentially hijacked aircraft to the local Airport close to where I live. It covers the whole of North Europe and is large enough to have the aircraft isolated and away from the Commercial traffic, and where the Special Forces can deal with the situation.

The baggage checks being carried out were in the terminal building of RAF Brize Norton. Brize Norton is the arrival/departure airport for passenger flights in military transport aircraft and it operates in virtually the same way as a civilian airport passenger terminal. I have used it several times.

Hey Natasha and Debbie, love all your podcasts, particularly relating to the military, as it’s something I am proud to say, I was there in the nineties and still have the t-shirt. and some of my uniform too. As you know very well by now, there’s many different regiments of the British army, sadly not as many as we did have due to government cuts in defence expenditure. How ever there are regiments that I feel are unsung heroes in battle and when not in battle. The REME, the Royal Signals, The Royal Logistics Corps. All these and others are so incredibly vital within the military machine.

Every British armoured vehicle has a boiling vessel for making tea and heating rations; it dates back to just after WWII when it was determined that many casualties were caused by crews leaving their vehicles to make tea.
@stevetheduck1425

The tea-making station exists, and it's big enough to warm up packaged scran (food), as comes in the standard ration packs. So: on the range popping off at targets, while the BV warms up, then tea and rats at the next stop.

Tanks are equipped with a BV, boiling vessel so crews can brew tea. It's a grey, square box looking thing with a tap. Ot came about after the German tank Ace Michael Wittman destroyed a whole column of tanks which had stopped and the crews were brewing up at the side of the road. I think it was 15 tanks destroyed by Wittman's single tiger tank. One night we were in our tank. The loader/radio op. had put a can of rice in the BV and didn't pierce the tin. It blew up blowing the lid off the BV. None of us realised what had happened. I was in the gunners seat which is below the commander, who was standing on his seat looking out of the cupola, a normal position. I was out of the tank, though the same hatch the commander was occupying. After realising the tank wasn't on fire or anything, we got back in and found the entire interior of the turret splattered with rice pudding. The loader, being tired like the rest of us had forgotten he put it in there.

Brize Norton is the RAF base that is also used by all military branches to fly out of so it has its own airport. Floppy eared dogs used are compliance dogs for searching. Pointed ear dogs like alsatians are noncompliance dogs for security and attack.

Hi I've just found your site. My dad was in the Royal Signals. My sister and I were born in Catterick, East Yorkshire. I am proud of my dad, he joined the Boys Brigade when he was 15yrs old. He fought the Maumau in Africa in the 50s/60s. He and my mum were married in Egypt when my dad was building the telephone system in the Canal Zone, my mum was in the WRAF as a telephonist where they met and married. When he left the British Army he went to Oman and was in the Omani Army, he retired in 1986 after my mum became ill. Sorry for the long post I meant to say that I'm surprised you haven't seen the US Graves in Cambridge dedicated to the US forces who died on UK/European soil.

Brize Norton is an RAF Station thats effectively the Militaries Airport, where troops deploying overseas (and returning) are flown in/out of - so it has the same issues and functions as a civilian airport, hence the drugs dogs.

The greatist thing that maintains the British army is the centuries of tradition which is why the love keeping the names like Hussars and Dragoons that go back over 300 years. This really means so much to the modern military that they ferociously want to be as good as their ancestors in defending their country and way of life and they will lay down their lives to honour their forefathers. Tradition and honour is all.

I formally worked in an EOD squadron and I noticed your surprise at bomb disposal from all three services. Each service has a traditional bomb disposal role, but the interoperability has broken down durisdictions. The RAF would handle anything dropped from an aircraft, or still attached. The Navy would handle anything below the waterline or on a vessel. In the army, The Royal engineers will clear conventional weapons like mines and boobytraps. The Royal logistic corps will clear any munitions or terrorist IEDs. The terrorist threat means that everyone now handles IEDs, but the Royal Logistic Corps still takes the the lead and coordinates response.
