While the experience of traveling via a cruise is awesome, I couldn't go on one, not the way things are. If you're interested, look up the shady practices of cruise companies(even the better ones) have around environmental impact(From grey water, to carrying invasive species to remote or protected areas, to how much fuel is burned, how much food is wasted and so on), the way they treat their employees, the way they avoid taxes and laws by registering the ships at their convenience, the way they have treated suspicious deaths as accidents / health issues to avoid negative publicity.. There is much more. I just can't justify to myself supporting an industry that operates in such predatory ways, especially for something so frivolous (luxury travel), not when you can stay in a luxury resort/hotel/house with similar amenities nearby if that's your thing. Most people look at what they get for their money and don't worry about the rest. Which, I mean, you do you but I'm not personally comfortable with it.

We did this trip from Southampton to NYC and then spent 5 nights in NYC. The food was incredible, but we were the youngest on board (in our 40’s) the amount of mobility scooters were astonishing. It’s not something i would repeat. Ended up looking after an elderly gent the whole trip! Lol

Seasickness only normally lasts for two days even Nelson was for the first couple of days at sea. Just takes time for the brain to adjust to the movement without seeing actual movement for some. A cold or an ear infection may delay adjustment. Looking at the horizon helps. That's why sailors often appear to be staggering when ashore the brain not having adjusted to no movement. For me a ship is the only way to cross an ocean and a train to cross a continent.

My grandmother once travelled to the US on the original Queen Mary, although I very much doubt she would have been in first class! When my mother passed away last March and I was having to go through her precious things, I came across a beautiful Queen Mary pen, which no doubt her mother had got as a souvenir of her once-in-a-lifetime journey. I didn't even know my mum had that pen, but it's now in my proud possession.

My nephew used to be a dancer on cruise lines. He worked for Carnival for a few years and we had the chance (his mum and my daughter too) to have a 12 day baltic cruise (wasn't cold) I had my doubts but I loved it. Hardly noticed that it was moving. Our cruise was free due to him working there. Because of this we got to see the places where the average guest doesn't get to see like the crew bar and nightclub. Behind the scenes of the shows. Add in the awesome countries we visited, made it my holiday of a lifetime. Love that you've found trek trendy ❤️

There are documentaries on KZbin about the construction of the QM2 and you're right, an ocean liner is a VERY different animal to a cruise ship. This actually meant there were massive extra challenges in building this ship. You wouldn't think it, but right down to it's bones the differences are as profound as the difference between an oil tanker and an aircraft carrier. Under the skin they are just THAT different.
@azzifyy5988
@azzifyy5988 Жыл бұрын
Even on the skin they're that different. An ocean liner on average uses 40% more steel for the construction of a comparative size cruise ship and this is just to deal with the stresses of repeated open ocean travel.

Great choice again girls! I live in a village situated between Southampton and Portsmouth. We're right on the shoreline opposite the Isle of Wight. Having two little dogs I walk the beach most days and often watch the late afternoon/early evening ships as they make they're way past the Isle of Wight on their travels. It always looks so romantic as dusk falls and the lights onboard are twinkling away. I've never cruised myself but my parents did for many years after dad retired and although I can't remember which ship they were on at the time I know they went to New York once as it was not that long after the 9/11 attacks and once docked they made they're way to ground zero to pay they're respects. 💞🇺🇸🇬🇧

After losing Dad 10 years ago my sister, Mum & myself did a transatlantic crossing ( The first of the season) across to the Caribbean on P&O Ventura...A huge ship but not at all over the top doing all the zip line ,ice rink, water slide sort of stuff..We had a drama the morning after sailing away from Southampton when a drunk guy decided to jump from the 7th deck. They did manage to rescue him ,luckily, but he was escorted from the ship when we arrived in Tortola.He had a hefty fine £10,000 & a lifetime ban from P&O..Then a couple of days after an elderly gentleman was seriously ill in the ships hospital & needed blood so myself & another lady gave blood for him..As a reward we were invited to go onto the bridge for the last sail away of the cruise...So exciting..What an adventure & Mum enjoyed it so much 3 years later we did a western Mediterranean cruise on the Norwegian Jade sailing out of Venice, something you can no longer do...When I win the Lottery (When!!) I'll do a world cruise with my sister & take Mum's photo so she'll be there with us along for the trip..Thanks Natasha & Debbie, keep up with the fabulous show.xxxxx

My late husband and I used to love cruising and as his mobility became an issue over the last few years it was the best way to get a break. We found cruising such a hassle free way to travel. Your cases are taken from you as you get out of the car and you next see them outside your cabin. When Eric needed a wheelchair they were falling over them selves to help us. you do as much or as little that you like but its there if you want it. Plus you get a little taste of some wonderful places you may do again on a longer trip. I was a travel agent for 17 years so have seen a lot of the world but now i'll settle for the quite life of having a bit of pampering on the sea.

@Natasha and Debbie - Speaking of the Titanic leaving Southampton, two people I knew in my town in Canada when I was a teen were the Mellenger's, a mom and daughter who survived the Titanic. They were in lifeboat 14 that returned for people in the water. One was 2nd Officer Charles Lightholler. He was pulled from an overturned collapsible lifeboat and obviously very wet and freezing cold. Elizabeth gave him her cape to keep warm and he gave her his officer's whistle which I actually got to hold one time (Talk about a nerd!). Both items are now in the Maritime Museum. Another friend's father lost his uncle, Albert Ervine, on the Titanic. He was 18 and a "volt worker", an electrician who volunteered to stay below to keep power for the lights and wireless. He was never found. If I ever win a lottery this trip would be my dream. I would also like to dive to Titanic. Dream on. Another friend's grandfather was the pianist on the original Queen Mary now docked permanently in California. The word POSH stands for port out, starboard home, supposedly the best location for a cabin.

A trip with a family member can be really great. As a 70th birthday gift to myself I met my big bro in London for a 10 day holiday around the UK. Rented a car, stayed with friends of his, a few nights in a B&B and two nights in London. Since he is a Mainer and I live in Louisiana, this was a true gift for both of us.

A lot of people like cruising to the USA. A few friends said it was convenient to fly over with loads of bags in bags and then shop till you drop and take a ship back over the ocean as there was no baggage limit. My ma did this quite a few times by flying to the USA and cruising back on an empty ship for cheap, with cases of cheap thrift store clothing to sell. Worked really well.

Okay so 4:01 is exactly why I follow your channel. I think this way too. I can't help but consider my small place in history, of those that came before us, and those that will come after. When I feel depressed I look at gravestones and the dates on them, and try to connect what I know of history to what they would've known then of their current life, and put myself into their world. What you do there, is exactly what I would think. I love that.

This new Queen Mary is unknown to me, but I sailed with my fellow choristers on the former SS Queen Mary in 1959. We were on our way to a US & Canada singing tour and back then it was cheaper for kids to sail across the Atlantic than for a party of 20 (incl staff) to fly. It was a great luxury for each of us, but the facilities were obviously less extensive on a ship built in 1937 than on its newer namesake. The old liner was sold by Cunard in the 60s and is now permanently berthed at Long Beach CA, where I hear it now serves as a mediocre hotel.

My ex-husband and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon. We went on a pretty small cruise ship called The Black Watch and we went to Norway. We were the youngest on the cruise by a good 4 decades but we absolutely loved it. We had to dress for dinner every night and on our final night they brought out a huge honeymoon cake for us. It was quiet and peaceful, there was a beautiful library, a cinema, a theatre and a couple of bars but that was it. We sat at a table with a retired Captain of the Black Watch and his wife. They were so lovely. He was employed by the cruise line to give lectures about the Black Watch Regiment because obviously the ship was named for it. He was such a fascinating and lovely man, they were a wonderful couple. I got horribly seasick because our cabin was so low in the ship but a sweetheart fellow passenger gave me her accupressure seasick wristbands and I was fine after that. I wouldn't do another cruise again because of the limited time you get at each port but it was a fabulous once in a lifetime experience and Norway was everything I dreamed of and more.

I’ve done the trip on QM2 got the ship from Brooklyn to Caribbean it’s an amazing ship we dined in the Britannia restaurant and were given all of our menus from each day we dined there on our last day on board. Didn’t stay in a room like that but the “ cheaper “ option rooms were good and we had an outside balcony . The ship has stabilisers for any rough weather and therefore not much rolling along the corridors if the sea was too rough. It has a planetarium on board which is amazing a cinema and the largest library on a ship loads to do too well worth the experience go for it ! 😀

After Brazil the ship went on to Montevideo and Buenos Aires.

That was on board ship for seven days. Back in 1968 I travelled From the UK to Western Australia by ship which took four weeks. To travel by ship is the best way to travel. It was so much fun, even the three day storm after leaving Cape Town, South Africa. As for sea sickness it can happen, I found it was much better to be out on deck, as you can see the movement of the ship, but inside you can't see that so it upsets your stomach.

My ambition is to do the trip but New York to Southampton. The advantage for me of doing it this way around is no jet lag. There are three classes on Cunard, Queens Grill, Princess Grill and Britannia Grill. When you do come to the UK there is a fantastic exhibition about the Titanic in Belfast near the Harland and Wolf shipyard where she was built.

We have just done the voyage to New York. The ship is unbelievable. It is like the Ritz Hotel the Albert Hall and Harrods all in one ship. It even has a British pub serving traditional pub fare and English Best bitter London Pride.. Two swimming pools and every other luxury you can think of. Breakfast in the top buffet is wonderful , and you could be with Americans o9r Germans or French and of course the British. The Captain did not invite us to dinner in his personal suite ; but there were plenty of smart British Officers walking about.. Incidentally the engine room is silent. We often moved at dinner, to meet new people.

Looking at the ship again reminded me of pirates which reminded me of Robin Hood Bay. This is a small town near Whitby which is built on a cliff. You'd need good legs to live there but it is very picturesque so I thought you might like to see it.

In 1956. I travelled Southampton to Montreal First Class on the Empress of Scotland.Several years later I did the journey in reverse on the Ivernia….again F/C Such luxury. Some years later I sailed from Liverpool to Karachi via Suez… this time on a 12 passenger cargo ship…probably my favourite of the 3 Sadly it’s been airports for me ever since!

Not strictly the UK as such, but there's a daily ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam. Sails at 5.00pm, eat and watch a show or a movie on board and wake up in the Netherlands. Perfect for a weekend in my favourite city, Amsterdam. Back home for work on Monday. It's not the Queen Mary, but it's pretty good.

In 1972 I went from England to Denmark by car passenger ferry. Sadly, the Harwich, Essex, to Esbjerg, Denmark, ferry route closed in September 2014. It took 13 hours one way, due to the pollution from the ships funnel, myself and eldest sister, her husband and son paid for a cabin below deck for the go and return journey. As it happens my nephew did stay on deck most of the time, he was 9 at that time. One abiding memory is the Danes like Rémoulade, an essential ingredient on open-face roast beef sandwiches (smørrebrød), as well as the Danish version of fish and chips, fried plaice with fries. It is also one of the essential condiments in a Danish hot dog. Danish remoulade is a modified version of the original French-style remoulade. It is a mayonnaise-based sauce, coloured brightly yellow with turmeric (or a pinch of curry powder), mixed with a purée of capers and pickled gherkins or cucumbers, and sometimes cauliflower, cabbage and carrots. DFDS offer a number of North Sea passenger ferry routes, including three crossings to Scandinavia. The Copenhagen to Oslo, and Kiel to Klaipeda and Karlshamn routes are popular choices for those wishing to visit Scandinavia and the Baltic from Europe by car after arriving in Holland or France from the UK. Harwich is the likely launch point of the Mayflower, which carried English Puritans to North America, and is the presumed birthplace of Mayflower captain Christopher Jones. Wikipedia.

I loved this video. A good start to my day. I used to know a woman who'd fly to London for our meetings and then take the QE2 back to NY every time. I can see why now. I also met Lord Matthews a few times in the course of my job. He owned Cunard then and he told us that, when he was a boy he used to watch - I think, both - the QM1 & QE2 from a hillside as each made her way to port. He said he fell in love with them and made a vow to himself that, one day, he would own them both. And he did.

Have you checked the tour of the late queens royal yacht Britannia? It's amazing yet it's so not what you would expect ...The queen was extremely frugal and was old school ...make and mend generation! ..she very rarely purchased new furniture for her homes ...the Yacht reflects her as a person ..it is not all glamorous as you would expect ..but its completely fascinating...❤😊..The saddest part of its history was the day the queen said goodbye to her boat when it was decommissioned..she cried and that is a very rare thing she never showed her emotions in public ...she was heartbroken it was written all over her face! ..😥❤

Hi from sunny Scotland,all the Great Cunard Queens were built at John Brown's Shipyard on the River Clyde, the last built there being the QE2, when I was wee my father got tickets for the launch of the QE2 and it was something to see and the memory will stay with me, sadly John Brown's is no more and ship building on the Clyde has just about died out, Clyde built ships were renowned throughout the world and so too Scottish engineers.

I love cruising although I’ve never been on any of the Cunard “Queens” I have done 3 round trip transatlantic round trip crossing from Southhampton to the Caribbean. It’s wonderful and makes me never want to fly again. Each time it did a stop over in Madeira on the way and a stop at Portugal on the way back. Each trip was 28 nights. The actual crossing took 9 days in each direction with the rest of the days going around the islands. It’s fantastic and I’d highly recommend it. To give you an idea of how big these ships are on one day on board my iwatch recorded over 15000 steps. They are massive and a little town in themselves. Great video thanks.

When a ship was the only option, the need to keep to a timetable influenced the design of ships; the timetable needed an "ocean liner" - something that can run a transport line across an ocean reliably. This means dealing with the weather. That requires the ship's structure, propulsion, and sea keeping to be able to run on schedule no matter the weather (calm sea, all the way up to a hurricane), and to be fast. And Queen Mary 2 is the last ship built as an ocean liner; all the other passenger ships you see fall into the category of "cruise liner" - flimsy floating hotels that have to run away from the weather. QM2 is built strong, and powerful. Being an Ocean Liner means that QM2 offers something unique that, pre-covid, people certainly wanted - travelling across the ocean as the primary purpose of the trip, doing it in style, and if mother nature felt like putting on a show having the "thrill" of being part of a hard-fought competition between sea, ship and crew; the ship shouldn't sink, but you'd be part of something that, in days of yore, would have been extremely dangerous! And yet you're there, inside, warm, comfy and quaffing champagne... The practical impact on design is that, in an ocean liner, you'd not be finding many large rooms. This marks the biggest difference between a cruise liner and an ocean liner; the cruise liner is basically a motorised raft with a large flimsy superstructure on top that can then have lots of large rooms (theatres, cinemas, restaurants). In contrast, an Ocean Liner is more like one continuous structure where the strength carries on right up through the ship, but then it's more difficult to have large empty voids like theatres. Traditionally, that meant an Ocean Liner would be "boring", because they couldn't have large entertainment venues, but that fitted their job of getting from New York to Europe ASAP (you'd not be bored for long). QM2 is very large, so she can have some such venues and still be strong enough to take the weather.

Hi Girls another great reaction vid and welcome news about Magic Monday. In the video you asked about cruises. My wife and I have done two. The first was a weeks cruise from Dubrovnik taking in various stops including Venice. We followed this up with a weeks stay in a Dubrovnik hotel just a ten minute walk outside the Old Town. We enjoyed this so much that we decided to go on a cruise again, a two week cruise around the Caribbean. This cruise (almost) started badly as we were told for the second week the cabin had been double booked. The cruise company offered us a choice either first week original cabin then transfer to a second cabin for the second week or have the second cabin for both weeks. My wife was unsure until I asked what the cabin number was for the new one. We were told it was Cabin Number One .Decision made two weeks in Cabin Number One. It was one of the best holidays we have been one up there with Dubrovnik. Love, hugs and prayers from Sussex, UK

We have done this crossing twice, in addition to other cruises on the QM2. We love it but it is definitely NOT a party cruise, it is elegant and sophisticated yet friendly. The black tie nights and theme balls are really enjoyable, it makes the whole sailing extremely special. There are places to sit quietly to read, the LGBTQ cocktail get togethers ( Friends of Dorothy) are great fun - 5pm with canapes, a great way to socialise and on the transatlantic crossings pets can be accommodated. Very happy memories.

This cruise inspired me to take my first trip to America in 2014 ( New York) l did'nt book it because my thinking was that if l got bored, l had nowhere too escape too( stupid thinking,l guess) l love the Art Deco Era,so l would have enjoyed the elegance, romance and style of the Liner. I remember when the Queens Royal Yacht " Britannia" was retired and it's one of the few times our belated queen shown any emotions. The Yacht travelled around the world , l guess the queen could totally relax. I guessed £6,000 pounds. l would pay that price. Another great vlog from you guys !! I am looking forward to watching more content. Lots of love from England.Sean Xxx

Southampton is the largest cruise terminal in Europe, in season maybe 3 cruise ships a day arrive and leave the docks. The Queen Mary is a Liner which means is can cross the Atlantic at speed. Once a year (jan - April) it does a 101 day world cruise

Hi ladies, loved the trip to New York thank you. I wonder what the cheaper cabins look like ?? You asked about other forms of transport in UK. Have a look at National Express coaches from London Victoria coach station. They are a really good alternative to trains and cover most of the country. They take longer than trains but are cheaper and you get to see much more of the countryside. Try the You Tube channel 'Let's Make a Trip', they seem good. A lot of trips are overnight but if you want to see the scenery maybe look at a daytime one.
