I love how words change over time. These days you are correct with the generic use of "pudding", however it originated from the Latin for sausage/intestine Origin: Middle English (denoting a sausage such as black pudding ): apparently from Old French boudin ‘black pudding’, from Latin botellus ‘sausage, small intestine’.

Shortbread originated in Scotland. Although it was prepared during much of the 12th century, and probably benefited from cultural exchange with French pastry chefs during the Auld Alliance between France and Scotland, the refinement of shortbread is popularly credited to Mary, Queen of Scots in the 16th century.

@@chsh1 A good red leicester (not all the supermarket brands are "good" and may have more in common with mass produced cheddar with the addition of a red/orange colouring) is different. There are some good cheddars not made in the heartland of Cheddar Gorge (cheddaring in that case is the process rather than where it's made). A good cheddar or red leicester probably has a designation of the farm where it comes from, meaning there is a reputation to be lost if it's just a bleah generic cheese. On special occasions (like Christmas or my birthday) I have been known to spring for a more expensive favourite and get some Stilton, hmmmmm

I don't know if it's exactly the same, having never tried US pudding, but I think the closest thing we have is Angel Delight! It has similar flavours too, as butterscotch Angel Delight is a classic here! And to answer your pancake question - I haven't eaten pancakes _in_ the USA, but I have made pancakes from a traditional cookbook which had both English and American pancakes; my understanding is that American pancakes use a thicker batter and end up smaller but deeper and fluffier, whereas English ones use a thinner/runnier batter which spreads to fill the pan with a larger and thinner pancake closer to a crepe (not the same, but closer).

Aside from Yorkshire Puddings or steamed steak and kidney puddings (suet pastry filled with a rich meat mix, steamed for hours and served with vegetables), Pudding relates to when a sweet 'meal' is eaten, rather than what it actually is. We have pudding. You call it dessert. (we also call it dessert or 'afters') It comes after a savoury meal. Pudding can be a cake base (sticky toffee/spotted dick), a jelly type (trifle, jelly and ice cream), it can be what you call pudding - in the UK that instant pudding is sold as Angel Delight. So many pies and tarts (open pie, often Treacle tart), meringues, pastry based goods (profiteroles and other choux confections). Fresh fruit salad, mousse, so many things too many to name. They are all served as pudding.

Lindsay there is nothing wrong with being a crafting and homemaking nerd. If there were more of us out there, there would be less waste in landfills( cuz we use stuff over and over) I also think common sense went out the window when people started relying on tech to fix everything. If they knew have to use their imagination to make things and fix things, they wouldn't need tech as much. FYI there is NO Ai switched on in my house, even th3 devices that have it, the Ai isn't functioning.

When the world went crazy in 2020 I just sat back and used a few of my supplies, so didn't need to go outside. It is sad because at one point people like you and I were the norm. We didn't expect others to pick us up. Those days are long gone and people are the worst for it. It makes me happy when I hear of people teaching the next generation. I agree tech has it's place, you and I wouldn't be sitting here having a conversation if it wasn't for tech.
