I get the formula for reactions, but I sure wish this one had been an exception. I wish you two had known ahead of time that this song was a tribute to John Lennon after his murder. Most of us knew this ahead of hearing the song. I hope you go back and listen knowing this. Amber knew that she was missing some of the meaning and that was impressive. Honestly, I would love to see you react to it again knowing this. I think most of your fans would not mind the redundancy because the lyrics mean even more knowing the context. RIP John Lennon. Sir Elton John outdid himself with this tribute.

Elton remembered the moment he found out about John's murder. He was on a plane to Australia, and when they landed, an announcement said "Would the Elton John party please stay on board." Elton knew someone had died. He feared it was his grandmother. John Reid, Elton's manager at the time, went up to find out what was going on. He came back in tears, and told Elton that John Lennon had been murdered. Elton and the whole band were devastated. They had virtually all known Lennon personally, having worked with him and been friends in the mid-'70s. This song truly came from the heart, and it shows.

@@chrisoakley5830 It was a game between Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. Being a huge Miami fan I was staying up late to watch this because Miami needed to win this game to go to the playoffs and near the end of the game it looked like Miami was going to lose because New England was setting up for a winning field goal to win it. Just then Howard came on and announced the murder of John Lennon. It was devasting, then New England missed the field and the game went into overtime where Miami won it. It was a really bittersweet moment. I still remember that whole event like it happened last year.

That's the gist of the whole song. 'it's funny how one insect, can damage, so much grain' Sir Elton was pointing a finger directly at Chapman, (his murderer), without naming him. After realizing that you don't know about this song, I agree that you need another listen. John used to take care the small garden outside The Dakota. He and Elton recorded "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" in 1974. John made a special appearance with Elton at Madison Square Garden, after saying that he would only perform the song if it hit #1, which it did. EJ said the roof blew off, when John came onstage (there's a clip out there) EJ never played this song, except in New York, until his residency in Las Vegas, a few years ago. There are two live performances, his 60th birthday, and Vegas, where he explains the reasons, and why he needed to share it, again. Please consider another reaction. Love you guys. ✌💙

The next John Lennon song you should do is Whatever Gets You Through The Night. Lennon got Elton to sing backup on that song, and while they were recording it Elton bet Lennon that it would go to number 1 on the charts. Lennon, who had not had a number one solo song to that point and really wanted one, took the bet, which was if it went to number 1 Lennon would have to appear on stage at an Elton John concert. The song did go to number 1, and Lennon appeared at Madison Square garden later that year (1974). It was Lennon's last live performance in front of a crowd.

This song is a tribute to John Lennon. If you guys ever do Elton's "Benny And The Jets", I hope you do a live version. He goes out 110% on that song in all his concerts. He tears that piano up and puts the audience in a frenzy.

Not to burst your bubble here but the "live" version of "Bennie and the Jets" (from the album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road") isn't really a live version at all. It was a studio creation where the engineer added the audience sounds to the studio track. There is a making of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" documentary where they show how the audience applause was added into the studio track.

@@TheCkent100 - You didn't burst any bubble, for the 1980 Central Park version I WAS THERE. Sadly, a couple months after that concert, just a few blocks from there, John Lennon was murdered.

Back in the day, I was damn near obsessed with this song. I carried around a portable cassette player and played this constantly. I wasn't the biggest Beatles fan, but the emotional power behind these lyrics was undeniable.

Jay & Amber- this is my fave EJ song. I still get vivid memories of the days just having graduated HS in Bixby (Okla., of course), driving through the neighborhood. It hit me that my days there were getting short. Between the message of this song and those post graduation thoughts, this song haunts me still. I love it. Glad to see you hear it!

A beautiful tribute to John Lennon after his murder in New York City by two of his closest friends. Elton's lovely melody flows so well with Bernie Taupin's heartfelt words creates one incredible, poignant love song.

A heart-breaking and beautiful song rich in metaphor. The "gardener" is John Lennon, and Elton wrote this song as a tribute after "Johnny's" tragic murder on 8 December 1980. The "empty garden" is the void left behind after the loss of his good friend and soul-mate. I have brief personal story about that tragic day in 1980 .... My father was in the Navy in the early 1960's, and was in Portsmouth (England) in 1962 when these 4 lads with long hair (for the time) came rushing out an adjacent building and promptly stole the taxi he was about to step into. After the taxi sped away, a mob of screaming girls ran after it. My dad turned to a policeman standing nearby and asked what the commotion was all about. The policeman looked at him incredulously and replied "You've never heard of The Beatles???". My dad was 21 years old at the time, and by the time he and my mother got married in 1965, they were both confirmed Beatle-maniacs. As a result, I grew up listening to their Beatles records and became a life-long fan as well. The evening of Monday 8 December in 1980, I was 13 years old and my dad was driving me home from my hockey game. The news bulletin announcing the death of John Lennon came on the radio, and my dad pulled the car over and wept openly. It was the first time I had ever seen him cry. For those who weren't around when John Lennon died, it is hard to convey the impact it had on so many people. He was more than just a musician. He was a beautiful and loving soul. Think of 3 of his songs that demonstrate most clearly who he truly was ... "Give Peace a Chance", "Imagine", and "Happy Christmas (War is Over)". I remember seeing images from a candlelight vigil in New York City in the aftermath of this tragedy. One that stays with me is a young woman, tears running down her face, holding a sign that read "Remember love. Remember John Lennon". So true.💔

One of the finest pieces of writing by Bernie & Elton. A song that hits you emotionally when you understand that this was a song written for John Lennon after his passing. This song still hits the heart. "It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain" referring to the man that killed John. John being the gardener. It is a touching tribute. I do think that now that you know the story behind this song that you will feel it so much more.
