I grew up with the music of Elton John. He was really big in the 70's-80's. He collaborated with Bernie Taupin since 1967 on more than 30 albums. They were one of the best song writing teams. Bernie wrote the lyrics & Elton supplied the melody. They had so many great hits together such as "Your Song", "Levon", "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man", "Honky Cat, "Crocodile Rock", "Daniel", "Bennie & The Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle In The Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "The Bitch Is Back", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" etc.

Had to comment on this since I didn't see any other commenters mention this: This song was not a song recorded live in front of an audience. It was a studio creation. The engineer combined the studio track with a live audience recording, fading the audience levels in and out at appropriate times. This information was revealed in a documentary on the making of the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.

One other thing about the audience clapping. The engineer said British fans were always a hair behind the beat (I think all audiences are) so he purposely has the clapping just a smidge behind the down beat to make it appear more like a live recording.

“I Guess it’s Why They Call it the Blues” & “Candle in the Wind” which was written in tribute to Marilyn Monroe and rewritten to perform at Princess Diana’s funeral. Favorite lyric “Your candle burned out long before your legend ever did (will)”.

I saw him live twice in the early nineties. He is an amazing showman and has an incredible sense of humor. Saw him at Madison Square Garden in New York and Billy Joel joined him as a surprise to the audience on several songs and it was amazing!

Billy Joel and Elton John toured together a lot. I saw them at the Meadowlands in the 2000s - at that point, Joel was very animated and John was more reserved (British royalty influence, perhaps?). It was as if they switched roles from who they used to be.

"Philadelphia Freedom" is a great Elton John Hit...kind of a disco groove. It sounds VERY '70's....

Oh, god! Bennie and the Jets is such an iconic weird piece of music! Sir. Elton has always been amazing. I love your love for him. I can not insist enough, "60 years on", best on live 70's... or whatever version. Can't go wrong with him... Thanks for sharing!

Actually came out in '73. Was on the Yellow Brick Road album. After it hit # 1 on the R&B charts, he played it on "Soul Train". The second or third time I saw him live (in the 80's -first saw him in '75) he extended the solo of this song into a wild 5 or 6 minute piano rampage.

Saw EJ for my first concert ever in '75-he played for 3hrs and the crowd was electric. Also saw him 2 yrs ago and it was also amazing-his piano playing is off the charts!

Gonna toss in another vote for "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." It's one I have to tread carefully with (the first half is angry grief encapsulated), but it's brilliant.

Elton John one of the best performers I have seen live. I was was lucky enough to see both Elton and Freddy Mercury at Live Aid. I wasn't fans of theirs at the time being only 14 and into Duran Duran and George Michael, but watching them perform converted me. My son has tickets to Elton's farewell tour this summer, not at all jealous.... really.

This song was underplayed and underappreciated on rock and pop radio. It was HUGE hit on R&B radio. He even performed it on Soul Train.

This is such an underrated, funky song, and one of my all-time favorites! I really like the call-and-response interplay between the piano and synthesizer towards the end. ❤Elton John.

I remember living in Atlanta back in the 1980s and frequinting Oxford Books on Peachtree Road. Elton John lived down the street and used to come in while I was there on numerous occasions. I enjoyed talking to him at length quite often. What a prince of a man.

Elton's early stuff, up until 1975 or so, is amazing. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is pure dynamite, but there are so many great ones in those early years.

This was a great line up today guys. Elton John is my favorite solo male artist of all time. I grew up to his music and every single one of his songs has a special memory in my life. OMG, Elton has so many great hits. Philadelphia Freedom, Someone Saved my life tonight, The Circle of Life (Which he wrote for the Lion King) Etc... Thank you so much.

Just went to an EJ concert back in October. It’s the last of his tours. The farewell. He’s been doing it for years. And it’s been extended because of Covid, but he actually is pretty much getting wrapped up with his last few show dates of his last tour. The concert was amazing. This guy belts and smashes the keys, at 75 years old, for an hour and a half. Amazing.

I was blessed to see him Live on the floor right in front of the stage with 2 of my older siblings (I just turned 55), brother in law, boyfriend and a few friends (and made many new ones) years ago. I took lots of pictures and video and lost everyone of them before I could see any of them when my hard drive crashed. I still have the hard drive because of the Elton John concert on there. I need to take it to a Computer shop to see if they're able purge them. Awesome Memories and Concert!

Elton John was my very first concert in 1976. The entire show was full of hits and he's continued to write & produce even more great songs for decades.

I remember being on a Jr High class trip to Lake Powell in Southern Utah after this song came out. We camped and water skied for a week. Playing music around the camp fires at night. This was the coolest song played. Loved Elton's music ever since. Saw him in concert at BYU in 1984. Best concert I ever went to. He's a great performer.

You guys are "old souls"! I was born in 1954 (67 years old now) and grew up listening to the music of the 60's and 70's, music that you are now learning about. I have been fortunate enough to have seen Elton John perform live, not once, but twice. I also saw the Beatles live in 1964 at the ripe old age of 10 years old. (My older sister didn't want to go the concert alone so she dragged me). I have seen live performances from Janis Ian, Phil Collins, James Taylor, Carole King, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Neil Young, along with his friends Crosby Stills and Nash. Watching you enjoy the music of my youth brings a smile to my face and lifts my heart. Thank you.

I was fortunate to be able to go to one of his Live Performances back in 2012 in Wheeling WV .As great as his songs are unless you have seen him LIVE you are really missing out on all the talent he has and those who support him. He did 4 Hours that night with NO BREAKS at all and then did another half hour of Encore when the crowd asked for it

I had the great pleasure of seeing Elton live back in the late 70s. Amber, I swear he changed costumes after every other song, each time getting more and more flamboyant. If you want to hear his rockier side, check out "I'm Still Standing", guaranteed to have you both chair dancing!
@ammaleslie5092 жыл бұрын
i can believe he changed costumes after every song, they were so elaborate, and he performed with such energy that he sweated through them in a single song (stage lights are hot too)
