To Dutch viewers: I will be making a video asking random Americans questions about the Netherlands 🇳🇱 What should I ask them? Thank you all for watching! I will be up in the mountains this week making new videos. See yall soon!
@randar19692 күн бұрын
Just ask them what they want to know from the Netherlands and tell them to be direct and without sugarcoating anything. Beating around the bush is only frowned upon here as if you aren't honest.. Just a culture difference. In fact we like critism as well shows that you care and want to help improve. Oww and you will see a lot of Dutch being unaware about American culture and laws... They will tell you to use an adblocker as they are very legal to use here and providers can't throttle traffic speed for certain usage of software like Torrents or Adblockers that's forbidden by law in our country..

The windmills where also the reason for the golden age. They were very efficiënt in sawing. They provided the shipyards.
@pietergreveling2 жыл бұрын
They also invented the crankshaft, for sawing several logs the same time!

The Dutch still build windmills for sawing timber into useable boards. The large windmill that does heavy millwork along the Zaan with the large green shed is new as being built since I was last up in Wormer in the early 2000's. I miss watching the coco barges and smelling the coco in the air from the nearby chocolate factory.
@RealConstructor2 жыл бұрын
The windmills shown in the beginning of the video, were mills at the banks of the river Zaan and were not for pumping water. Those were factory mills for sawing wood, grinding seeds and nuts for flower and oil and much other goods and products. The Zaan region was one of the first industrialized parts of Europe right around 1700.

The original video repeats something I've heard elsewhere but isn't right: the polders are not the place where flowerbulbs are grown in mass, that is generally done in areas right behind the sandy dunes. The polder soil is heavy clay. After it's dried out by willow trees and reeds, it's better for growing potatoes, cabbage and grassy meadows for dairy herds. The bulbs need the sandy soil where the dunes mix into the clay.

windmills weren't just for the war against water...also war against the english since the dutch could pump out a bigger fleet as lumber could be processed mechanically as the english had to do it manually.
@dunk922 жыл бұрын
the Windmills are still in use. They are not just there to remind the past. No.. They are still maintained for the same function. Some wooden parts inside are replaced with metal parts, but they also often replace wooden parts, because the whole inside mechanism is build so you can easy replace specific wooden parts over time. there is alsmost no original piece inside anymore.

That is indeed how you pronounce Gouda. Gowda, not Gooda. Btw, in Dutch we don't refer to the cheese as Gouda, but as "Goudse kaas" (cheese from Gouda, or Goudan cheese). If we say Gouda, we mean the town, not the cheese.
@bertkassing85412 жыл бұрын
To make it even more complicated.....I love North Dutch cheese. That is a Gouda cheese from North Holland :-) In my opinion the very best cheese there is. It is also the only European protected cheese.

Look up the dutch city Gouda on maps. It is the city the typical cheese is named after. However there are endless brands of cheese named after the city or region they come from here. Gouda cheese (or 'Goudse kaas' in Dutch) is the overall name of the type of cheese.

I live in Volendam, a village on the IJsselmeer with a dike and a windmill. Volendam is probably the most famous🥰 village in the Netherlands. 36,268 people live here. The village receives together about 1 million visitors per year. Also famous people were here..... Mohammad Ali and Larry Hagman -JR Ewing and many more. The village is a musical village in the Netherlands with many famous artists .... but also for its typical costumes, the fishing boats. There are many videos of that ... interesting to watch. Sorry for my bad English🙄 Thank You and Love from the Netherlands 🇳🇱🌷🌷🌷🇳🇱 ❤🤍💙🙋🏼♀️😘

I actually live in the city called Gouda (the G is pronounced gutteral). The cheese with the same name was at first produced in this city. Nowadays it's name is connected to the way it is produced and aged, no matter where it is made.
@user-wn8cp3qf1x3 ай бұрын
Gouda cheese wasn't produced first in Gouda but at its surrounding farms and taken to the Gouda weigh-house to be weighed and then sold at the market place in front of the building. So the name Gouda for the cheese originates from its city's selling place and not from the one it was (first) produced in. BTW, I live in Gouda too.

In Dutch the "G" is pronounced as an "H" which is why the section of Manhattan where Pedro Stuyvesant had his farm in the Groenwijck (Green District) is now called Greenwich Village being a corruption of the Dutch word Groenwijck since the English could not, or would not pronounce the Dutch word correctly - - - you may want to study the highly complex polder/dike and railroad network in the Netherlands. In short all of the polders in the Netherlands are engineered to pump out water to a higher level and then to the next higher level and so on until the excess water reaches the sea. Gang windmills were and still are used to lift this water, whereas one windmill will raise water five meters. Most of the railroads are raised to an optimal level to facilitate foot evacuations during emergencies, which few Dutch people are aware of - have you ever noticed that eerie siren throughout the nation every first Mondag?
