It's called banter between the English, Welsh, Scottish and northern Ireland and we quite happily mock one another and throw insults and barb's at one another but if a foreigner does it we gang up on them. It's like sibling rivalry.

I once got lost in Wales. I was in a camper van with my kids and we ended up on a narrow country road up a mountain when it was dark and very foggy. Finally came across a really delightful pub who let us stay in their car park for the night. Next day when the sun came up we found ourselves in the most beautiful countryside, beside a stream and woods and total silence apart from the birds. The pub had chickens and goats and play area for the kids. Absolutely loved it - but never did find Captain Jack on our travels.

I live in Cardiff. Its a great city! You have the castle and the parks ( bute park has 146 acres) and museums but then You can do the city type of stuff - eat, shop, drink etc. What makes it great for me is that its all within walking distance. You dont need to get taxis or buses to get from one part to the other like you do in bigger cities

The zoning rules in the UK are much stricter than the US so you don’t get the the same urban sprawl, and a lot more areas of greenery. There’s also the right to roam laws so you can walk through a lot of the countryside without having to drive to a national park. But where zoning is less strict is also beneficial in that commercial and residential property can be mixed so you don’t need to drive for miles just to go to a store or a pub or restaurant, mostly it’s in or near the town centre and in walking distance

@@TheNatashaDebbieShow You have to look for the Public Footpath signs in the countryside. Officially any path that people have traditionally tended to walk across anyone's land or property gets made an official Public Footpath and the owners are not allowed to fence across it or keep people out. It was a whole political struggle in the 1930s when urban workers started going hiking at the weekend in a big movement. There will be little signs on wooden poles attached to fences or dry stone walls showing where Public Footpaths start and end, and stiles and gates for walkers to cross fences and walls as required. Stiles are hard to describe, so look for images. It's basically a long wooden step passing through the fence so you can step over it from either side. Always close a gate again after you.

June’s probably one of the dryer months, so a good time to visit, not the busiest part of the tourist season, but the attractions are all open. If you’re visiting from a left hand drive country - hire an automatic with sat nav (one less thing to worry about). On a narrow lanes most drivers are cooperative and will pull in to to let you by and flash you to call you forward. In Snowdonia there are plenty of castles and world class narrow gauge steam railways. The Zipworld attractions, whilst expensive, are worth a go if you’re looking for an adrenaline experience.

Single track roads... that was an extreme example. The 'bump outs' or lay-by for allowing cars to pass are usually pretty frequent and the hedges are usually low enough to see if anything is coming. That being said I did get trapped for a while on a road like this a couple weeks ago with three transit vans coming toward me while I was in the Lakes. Oh and GPS isn't actually your friend as it'll take you on these roads when a perfectly viable and wider alternative is available it just might take a few minutes longer. Following brown tourist signs usually keeps you on the main roads where possible. I also wouldn't recommend driving in our cities, they weren't built for it and you'll find the roads narrow and senseless compared to what you're used to. A car however is essential if you want to see the countryside, just don't be put off by that clip.

The Ffestiniog Light Railway is so gorgeous. It was originally an industrial narrow-guage railway for hauling slate from the mountainside down to the port for final cutting (roof tiles, blackboards, snooker tables) and shipping. Since the slate was exhausted and it was shut as part of nationalised railway cutbacks in the 1950s, it's been turned into a tourist attraction by amateur enthusiasts, and both the route and the little steam engines and railcars are so, so, so pretty. The only thing is that the Ffestiniog railway timetable isn't synched up with the local bus timetable, so you may have to wait half an hour before or after riding the train to be able to catch the bus back to wherever you're staying.

If you go to Cardiff, The Welsh Folk Museum at St Fagans is a must. The area has buildings from around Wales that were dismantled and rebuilt at the museum. The buildings are furnished authentically and they have loads of guides there that will be pleased to explain everything. And it's all free, as most of the major museums in Wales are. Cardiff Castle is . . . weird. The Romans built a fort there, the Normans built a castle there and the richest people in the world at the time, the coal barons, made it into a fantasy home, in the Victorian period. It's fabulous inside, but at the same time, fake historical frippery.

I am English and I love Wales. I found the countryside a very spiritual experience. At a lovely green spot with trees and a swift flowing river so beautiful and mystical - if a wizard had appeared on the back of a unicorn I would not have been surprised. I feel the Welsh are rooted in the land. Welsh landscape feeds the soul. Wales has some of the best beaches in the world. My favourite Welsh visits - Llandudno a seaside resort of the Victorian kind, Caernarfon castle, Portmeirion village, Royal mint at Llantrisant, caves you travel through by boat can't remember where they are, wonderful craft shops. I havent even scratched the surface yet and will be going back, time and time again. The jokes about the Welsh - the nations of the United kingdom are like a family I can say what I like about my brother but if someone outside says it I'm going to defend him vehemently. The rain - the UK (maritime climate) gets a decent amount of rain otherwise it wouldnt be so green but I think the weather thing is more a reaction to grey days. We dont tend to get torrential rain but frequent showers. In the winter it is miserably damp and grey. I love cold crisp sunny winter days but it doesn't usually get all that cold. If we get 2 inches of snow everything grinds to a halt! The damp in the winter gets right into your bones, my Canadian friend was always complaining about the cold and yet its frequently minus 40 where she comes from!

My mom and dad moved to Wales and lived there for 20 years, so I often drove up to visit. Yeah some of the roads are bad and it does take three times as long to drive distances that take less elsewhere. But it's a beautiful country - and as someone else mentioned here below - they have some stunningly beautiful coastlines. Yeah. It does rain a lot. I always say 4 days out of 7, it rains.

Dear friends, don't bother trying to learn Welsh as I believe you have to be born there to master it! The problem is that nice normal English-looking letters mean completely different things. A double L produces a sound we don't have in English and W can w or an oo sound. Most of the roads are good (unless you're going to visit a farm halfway up a mountain). The scenery is magnificent, the people are friendly, the food is good and they produce some really good beers, which is nice. I recommend a old-ish video on YT called North Wales: Feisty and Magical to give you some idea of that area. It has more castles per square mile than anywhere else on Earth (the king really didn't trust the locals). There are plenty of other things on YT about Wales so you'll find tons of info. FYI, the name Wales comes from an Anglo-Saxon word (walesa) meaning foreigner. Typical, isn't it? The Anglo-Saxons invade someone else's country and then insult them but, to be fair, the Welsh do still refer to the English as "seis" which means Saxons. Thanks and best wishes.......................................................the ancient Englishman.

Many visitors who stayed with me here in Wales were shocked ( and terrified) by ending up on narrow country lanes - but this was only because their google map sent them on 'shortest route' :))) They would have been quicker following the main road signs and staying on the plentiful 'A'' roads. Easy mistake to make though if you are in the countryside - but the same applies all over the UK. Btw - its true - you will find Welsh people are very friendly , funny, welcoming ...and very talkative :) If you visit don't miss the coastline !

Welsh can be a tricky language to learn - not really any more difficult than any other language, but still quite daunting to begin with. The biggest piece of advice I can think of is to recognise that it's *not* English and doesn't have the same roots as English, so the pronunciation is very different. You need to stop thinking like an English speaker. Pronunciation can be difficult. The English have had 1500 years to learn it and they're mostly still awful at it. But it can be done. The actor, Rob McElhenney proved that yesterday with his "party trick" of an almost flawless pronunciation of that longest place name, which many Welsh people struggle with. (McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds recently bought my local football club and made their first appearance in Wrexham this week).

I live on the border of Mid Wales, in lovely rural Shropshire, ... and I love Wales. The landscape is God's own country for riding the motorbike. Ride into the hills in the middle of nowhere and enjoy the silence. You get used to narrow twisty roads, lol. Actually they are great fun 😀 And most roads are much bigger than the single track in that video. If you like to see Spring lambs, a drive in the hills is joyous. If you love purple Autumn heather covered hills then crossing the Berwyn Mountains in the Autumn is lovely. Weather is better than he makes it sound. Mostly. The castles are are really cool. Living here in the Welsh Marches, they are everywhere :-) Just like the Iron Age Hill forts. And "Offa's Dyke" is very cool indeed ~ it's worth googling the history ;-) Welsh place names are interesting to decipher as they are often very literal. "Pont" or "bont" meaning bridge, "Eglwys" meaning church, "Mawr" or "Fawr" meaning Big, "coed" means trees or woods. The place names are often these descriptive words joined together. For instance a village might be called "PontFawr", because it has a "big bridge" for crossing the river etc. Apologies to any Welsh speakers if I've messed up the Welsh language there. I was never actually taught welsh but just tried to pick things up over the years, living on the border.

Those are just little country lanes to remote farms and such once you're off the beaten track. The normal roads are wider with each way traffic with multiple lanes and motorways where applicable. In a number of areas mainly in North Wales and parts of West Wales the locals use their first language of Welsh in everyday life but they all speak English as well ( even American English) if you visit. The banter and Mickey taking between the Welsh and English indeed all the citizens of the UK countries is pretty much two way and for the most part good natured.

dont worry most Welsh people struggle with that long placename. as a help to start you off LL in Welsh is a letter in its own right different to L and is not pronounced as L to pronounce LL put your tongue to touch the tip of your mouth now try to say a H as in Hat sound while keeping your tongue touching the roof of mouth then sort of end the sound with a bit of L mixed in. If you see an F in Welsh pronounce it as a V (we dont have a letter v in welsh alphabet) if you see FF in Welsh pronounce that as a F. If you see a C in welsh its always like c as in cow. but if that c is followed by a h thats a different letter so CH is pronounced the same way you would pronounce the CH in loch. I think just those tips might make it possible for you to make a good stab at saying it. best of luck. just for your interst this is the full Welsh alphabet. a, b, c, ch, d, dd, e, f, ff, g, ng, h, i, j, l, ll, m, n, o, p, ph, r, rh, s, t, th, u, w, y. as you can see we have a few missing if compared to English and a fair few extra letters made up of 2 characters but still count as just 1 letter.

I'm a quarter Welsh, and my family used to drive to Wales for the summer holiday every year for about 6 years. It's a beautiful country full of lovely people with a gorgeous accent. Apparently in American billiards, the term for putting spin on the ball as you strike it with the billiards pole is "Welsh", because spin was brought over to the American scene by a Welsh player. I have to assume that he was a snooker or pool champion in the UK, because we don't do billiards. On another note, I have no idea why flaking out on a contract is called "Welshing" or welching. I'm sure its just a slander. There's no tradition of calling Welsh people cheats or deal-breakers over here. There is a strong tradition of Welsh people dominating the milk delivery business, because generations ago Welsh beef farmers would herd their cattle across country to London to sell to the butchers there, such as at Smithfield Meat Market and others, and they diversified into also selling milk, because they had the cows and they were going that way anyway. Where they still exist, local dairies which send out the electric milk floats early in the morning to deliver bottles of cold milk to houses often have Welsh names like Jones & Sons Dairy.

The thing about British weather is that it changes frequently. That’s the difference. So, it can be dry one day and wet the next. Even dry one morning and wet the same afternoon... so no it doesn’t rain all the time at all... it changes rapidly which is really entertaining actually.. you need to have clothes for all weather .. come prepared for that and you’ll be fine 👍🏻👍🏻 And you don’t have to hike at all... it is great hiking country for hiking fans but equally wonderful for beautiful driving - in Wales. As someone with Welsh heritage on my mum's side, I've always felt like learning Welsh (and Old English) but found it a real mind f*ck. As for the roads, it's part of the "price" you pay for living somewhere with a ton of history. It's similar to eastern England, where I live. Lots of old Roman roads, medieval stone bridges (check out Trinity Bridge in Crowland) and churches that go back over 1000 years. We're used to this kind of thing though. There's also a detective series set in Wales called Hinterland that you might like. It gives a flavour of how bleak and also beautiful Wales can be and some of the scenes in the English version are shot in Welsh, with subtitles. A small amount of each episode, maybe a couple of scenes, but it is worth a look.

As an English person I highly recommend visiting Wales, I've been many times and it's always wonderful, despite its size there is always something new to see, yes there are a lot of castles and very impressive they are too. You mentioned about the best time to go, you mentioned about star gazing, I would recommend spring or autumn (I know it will be cooler) but the nights will be longer (still warmish from the day but dark enough to look at the heavens properly) you really only need a decent pair of binoculars, you will get to see far more than you ever expected due to how black the nights are. I live in Yorkshire and it too is a beautiful place, it too was also a coal mining area and the loss of the mines has devastated the communities here too, so I have an affinity with Wales, we also have a lot of castles too, oh almost forgot, avoid cities if you want to star gaze "light pollution" kills a black sky for tens of miles and more, fun fact, you will see lots of slate rather than rock (I know they are very similar) the slate is at an angle of 30 degrees everywhere in Wales, its how the tectonics worked millions of years ago so its not going to alter anytime soon, not all roads are that narrow, but a lot will be :)

Definitely have a look at places to go, including the coast, it’s beautiful (and don’t be put off by the roads, most aren’t like that and even I manage on the ones that are and I’m not a great driver)

The vowels don’t “drop off”, Welsh has different vowels to English. Once you learn the Welsh alphabet it becomes much easier. Also, the long place name was made up at attract tourists back in the 19th century.

Indeed, and in fact Welsh has more vowels than English: a, e, i, o, u, w and y.

@@ffotograffydd I have never understood the difficulty in recognising Y and W as vowels (They can be consonants as well). Does SKY have no vowels, what about TRYST, is the Y on the end of funny a vowel or a consonant? There is one other sound not mentioned by Stephanie MacLea above, (well there is more than one , NG at the start of a word when the nasal mutation is in play is another, but you are unlikely to come across that), LL. If you put your tongue to the roof of your mouth and say CL you won't be a million miles away

Caernarfon Castle and Conwy Castle in North Wales are ones to visit. Also in Conwy you can visit the smallest house in Britain.

Wales (Anglo - Saxon for stranger or foreigner) is great, as is Scotland, Ireland and England. Some concentrate on what divides us, but these people need a good slap. The nations of these islands give us ALL a much richer history!

Rachel we are all allowed an opinion, but would you say the same for Canada and the US or Mexico and the US? If the answer is no then why would it be different for England, Scotland Ireland and Wales. My country of Wales has a history ten times longer than the US or Canada with our own language and everything else to every other country on the planet. Please do a bit of research before expressing an opinion in the future Rachael!

Yep, takes the biscuit doesn't it - being called foreigner on your own island. As for what divides the nations. The ruling elite bring inmt upon themselves...you can't beat children and drown villages and expect to not be held to account.

Hi guys, just wanted to say how much I enjoy your content. You come across as a lovely couple who are open to learning new things about unfamiliar cultures with respect and genuine curiosity. I'd like to recommend watching one of my favourite films, Pride (2014) about how an english gay rights group protested for and supported the miners in Wales during the strikes in the early 80's. Not for reacting to, just for your own research and interest. Hope you enjoy x

It doesn't help when you get loads of people from England buying up properties for a weekend escape. It means the locals can't afford to buy those houses but it also means that some villages or country places are empty during the week.

Don't worry about the narrow lanes, have lots of then accross the whole of rural UK. People drive accordongly, expecting to meet traffic ahead, can usually find a proper pull in to let each other pass, can be exciting!!
