“Schadenfreude“ to me also seems not to be explained quite right. Schadenfreude is not cruelty or lack of empathy per se. Think of Stan and Laurel, slapstick humor. When Ollie slips on a banana peel or both loose a piano they just dragged up a hill under a lot of pain and work, we laugh seeing it rolling down that hill again while they try to catch it, because we realize that these things happen to us just the same. It is not cruelty, but in fact a kind of sympathy/empathy instead! It might, however, also be use when someone always bragging about his superiority slips on a banana peel. He just showed that he is human after all and not the supposed superman, and we take joy in that kind of humbling of them as a regular human being taken off his imagined pedestal…

“Futterneid“ is really more so the feeling of missing out if siblings are fed at the same time and the term is not so much used when adults realize they‘ve ordered the wrong thing. It is a term borrowed from behavioral science when f.e. baby birds cry out loud and open their mouths wide in competing with their siblings for the worm mom brought to the nest. So, when two kids are give three cookies to share, they will watch very carefully that the one cookie split is split very evenly or they will have “Futterneid,“ they will feel getting the shorter end of their fair share….

What is missing here, however, would be the explanation of the advantage of these compound words. Basically, you can take any word, put it together wildly, and come up with something that makes sense in some way. This opens up an incredible wealth of descriptive possibilities and keeps creativity open. It also sharpens the precision of what is said by reducing the ambiguity of words.

Just say "looft-shloss" and you'll come pretty close to "Luftschloss". The German "sch" sounds exacly the same as the English "sh". Some other hints for you: German "a" = like the "a" in "car" German "ä" = like the "a" in "care" German "z" = like "ts" or "tz" and as you totally correctly explained German "v" = like "f" German "w" = like "v" The "w"-sound as it is pronounced in the English language doesn't even phonetically exist in German. No, you can't have "Weltschmerz" when you look at the homeless alone. You suffer from Weltschmerz, when you e.g. look at the homeless and then you take a step further in your mind and realize that the injustice that happens to the homeless can be found in all aspects of life. And that many people are unloved, even if they are not homeless. So you take the pain you feel at the sight of the homeless and you put it on every aspect of life. "Bob is homeless. Nobody loves him. That means I'm unloved too, because I'm emotionally homeless, because I'm defenseless against the elements of life. And that's basically true for all of us humans. And that makes my heart break"

“Fremdschämen“ is a fairly new word. You feel shame for someone else who does NOT feel shame (although s/he should). Think of being Seinfeld and watching Elaine dance awkwardly at a party while everyone is laughing about her (not with her). You feel ashamed on her behalf, while she is oblivious to her awkwardness and standing out like a sore thumb.

Afrikaans, being very close to German does the same thing. We just string as many nouns together, as is required to get to the precise meaning we wish to express. For example: waatlemoenkonfyttentoonslellingsgronde = the venue where jams/jellies, made of watermelon, are exhibited.

"Schadenfreude" means "damagehappieness" translated directly. Schadenfreude is the thing when it comes to Fail Compilations and stuff like it. It´s a natural feeling which everybody feel, nothing too bad. It´s how you live it, right? Greetings from Germany

Never heard Ruinenlust in my entire life. The Duden, kind of the German version of the OED, doesnt list that word either. So I suppose it's something like "Wanderlust", a term that is mainly used in the English language even though it's consisting of German words. German is, unlike most other indogermanic languages, a compository language, so you can easily combine words to create new meanings. Also can lead to very long words like Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz.

No one else can?? There’s a Dutch equivalent for all these words and probably in other languages to. The thing is, we can string words together to make new words. In Dutch we have a verb “swaffellen”, I’m pretty sure there’s no equivalent for that in other languages 😂

Much of the words describe a situation or feeling but not are used in a conversation. "Futterneid" - a dog isn't interestet in his food until a other dog want's to eat it. Then hell breaks loose and the dog attacks. Or a child is not interested in a certain toy. nUtil all his brothers and sisters get axactly this toy. Suddendly the child wants that toy. "Erklärungsnot" A politician is caught lying (what a surprise ;-). He tries to explain the situation. He stammers, can't find the right words, and makes everything worse. He can't justify why he lied. "Fremdschämen" If you are out with your partner and he embarrasses himself without realizing it, just doing one foolish thing after another. Everyone is laughing at him and he doesn't notice. Or even if he does notice and is unable to see that he is doing something wrong, yet continues anyway. Then you feel embarrassed; you experience secondhand embarrassment. "Schadenfreude" Gladstone Gander always cheats his way through everything. No matter what he takes on, he succeeds. Until one day, something goes wrong. He suffers a great loss. It's a tragedy. Yet, we feel joy because this time it happened to that guy who always got away with everything.

I love your theories on how to use these words haha I'll try and explain how you would use some of these things in a sentence: "Erklärungsnot" = being in a situation that's hard to explain Sie geriet in Erklärungsnot. = She has gotten into "Erklärungsnot". "Futterneid" = being jealous of other people getting better food than you do Warum bekommt er Pizza und ich nicht - da bekomme ich Futterneid. = Why is he getting pizza and I'm not - that's how I get "Futterneid". "Luftschloss" = castle in the clouds, a dream that's almost unattainable Eine erfolgreiche Karriere als DJ ist doch nur ein Luftschloss. = A career as a DJ is just a "Luftschloss". "Backpfeifengesicht" = a face that is just waiting to be slapped Da ist schon wieder das Backpfeifengesicht. = There it is again that "Backpfeifengesicht". "Ruinenlust" = desire to watch ruins idk any way this word was ever used, literally nobody says that lmao "Kummerspeck" = eating your feelings Wegen diesem Idioten habe ich mir jetzt Kummerspeck angefressen. = Because of this idiot I've now fed myself "Kummerspeck".
