We still have them in some places in the UK but they are used now for other things, e.g. "house" for a defibrillator , mini-library, mini-greenhouse. They used to match our red post boxes. Useless fact: Hull never had any red phone boxes because a company peculiar to Hull ran their telephone services. The phone boxes there looked the same as the red ones but they were off-white/cream in colour. They were a real novelty! If I went there as a child I used to look out for them!

London does have bins, you just won't find any in a train station. Bins at underground stations are metal hoops with clear bin bags attached to put rubbish in so you can see through them for anything suspicious 😊

...and the fact that no one ever looks to see what's in there is just one more monument to the fact that idiocy is rarely filtered out from even very large scale undertakings. It's pretty much certain no one in the UK would recognise a berm because the people who make berms don't feel obliged to have them be a bundle of red paper tubes with a mechanical alarm clock taped on the front. I guarantee you, you could take a kilo of modeling clay, wedge an old phone in it, wrap it in curry sauce soaked tinfoil, and drop it in a tube bin and not one person would pay the slightest attention.

'The City of London' is just a one square mile area of central London. So 13 rubbish bins still isn't a lot, but it's not as ridiculous as it first sounds. Most stations have reintroduced bins in recent years in the form of clear plastic bags clipped into a ring lid - so you can now dispose of rubbish, but in such a way that nothing is hidden from sight.

Remember "The City of London" (The Square Mile) is a small ceremonial county at the heart of (Greater) London. It is the old city area (basically Roman and early medievil London. It has it's own Police Force, Mayor and the financial centre (now along with Canary Wharf) of London. There are way more recycling bins in Greater London.

The "City of London" is whatever is within the silver dragon statues dotted around in a circle, each holding an england flag shield, there are two located on the south side of London Bridge and more for the east entrance to the old "City of London" around Whitechapel area not far from one of the jack the ripper victim spots. Not sure where the north ones are as never lived there and when I lived west I didn't know about them. My room mate in London Bridge was (still is but I don't live there now) a London tour guide for anything historical, royalty, conquering other places and bringing back artifacts, ghost tours etc. The financial district is mostly within this parameter but aren't what draw the line of what is the "City of London" and what isn't like the dragons. 😊

OK, some more UK facts: There are apparently over 400 preserved Steam Locomotives in the UK, of which 24 are approved to run on the mainline. There are also over 250 "retired" Diesel Locomotives being looked after by volunteers who bought them for preservation. According to an organisation called the "Heritage Railway Association" there are over 200 "minor" and "heritage" railways across Great Britain, running on around 600-miles of track (largely run by volunteers who come to restore and operate old locomotives in their spare time). The main rail network in the UK has 10,072-miles of track, with an additional 189-miles of track in Northern Ireland which carries 1.7-billion passengers a year and 110-million tonnes of freight annually. There around 1,900 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange (making it the 3rd biggest after the NYSE and Nasdaq in New York), compared to around 2,272 on the NYSE. Trading on the LSE as of last August around $3.18-Trillion vs around $25.564-Trillion on the NYSE. There are still 43 Building Societies left in the UK with 25-million members There are estimated to be 104,700 farmers in the UK, operating around 191,000 farms with only 20% of them exceeding 250-acres It is estimated there are around 2.9-million Anglers (people who go fishing) in the UK, worth about £1.4-billion to the national economy. The UK Supermarket industry was worth £211.8-billion last year, and expected to grow to about £241-billion over the next few years. My home town(well, city actually!) is Portsmouth, in Hampshire on the south coast.....Portsmouth is one of the most densely populated cities in the Uk, and is unique in being the only city in the UK that is on an island.. the island is called Portsea Island and yes, it is definitely separate from mainland UK.It's also the only city in the world that operates a year-round passenger hovercraft service, which runs to and from the Isle of Wight across the Solent. The city was also famous(or notorious, depending on your point of view) at the end of the 19th century for having more taverns, drinking establishments and pubs than any other city in the UK, which as the city was and still is, the home of the Royal Navy, is probably not too surprising....! Also, Portsmouth probably is one of the few cities to be just as well known by its nickname as it is by its actual name, for many years the city has been known by the name "Pompey" the origins of the nickname are sadly lost in the mists of time, although at my last count, I know six different stories , each one reputedly the "real" genuine one.........nobody knows for certain nowadays, where the name came from, but the nickname Pompey is very well known indeed........

I went in some of those caves in Kentucky when I visited America - while caves are caves (bear with me), the experience in the caves in America was VERY different to a visit to caves in the U.K. In Kentucky, the caves had light shows and the tour guide spent the time saying things like “that stalagmite there looks like batman” (or whatever). In the U.K., the tour guides spend the time telling you about the ancient geology, how the caves were formed, animals who sheltered in them etc… The American experience was turning the caves into entertainment - in the U.K. the priority was education. - and one of the caves I’ve been in in the U.K. is Peak’s cavern :)

I was working at 55 Bishopsgate when the IRA detonated a truck bomb outside the building next door (99 Bishopsgate). It was the most destructive bombings that they ever set off in London and unfortunately killed one person. Most bombings by the IRA in the city were at the weekend, to cause financial impact rather than loss of life, but after this event, there was fear that they may change their strategy and use smaller bombs on weekdays. It was this bombing that lead to the removal of bins within the City of London. If I remember correctly it was fear that the IRA might use the bins, and the sheer amount of destruction caused that day, that brought in the policy. They eventually returned some bins back after 20 years, which were designed to make them more difficult to drop large items in, as well as being made from material that was less likely to cause large fragments of shrapnel.

There was originally 7 kingdoms in England which united & after Eastelstan became the first "High" king of England (early 900c). One of the original Kingdoms was Kent & king Eadbald of Kent had a daughter called Eanswythe who he built a abbey/nunnery for. This was the first nunnery ever built in England, Folkestone Kent, where I am from. Now there is an 11th century church built on/close to the original dwelling named St Mary & St Eanswythe. Her relics are kept within a special place in the church foundations, & when tested were found to be accurate to the time period. There is a very old primary school called St Eanswythe opposite the church, which is still operational. Unfortunately last year one of the schools pupils, age 7 I think, got killed in a hit & run. His family wanted him buried within the church graveyard, but it was closed for burials sometime in the 18th C. (Funerals are allowed btw) His mum traveled on Christmas day to Sandringham, where the royal family have their xmas service each year. She hand delivered a letter for King Charles, asking for his help in making this burial possible. So King Charles spoke to who he had to in order for this young boy to be buried close to the school he loved, with success. This was big news locally & even made national headlines. The strength this woman showed makes my heart want to burst. A bit off topic I know, but still some VERY PROUD facts about England & my town, where both include Kings & strong women

There are many errors on Wikipedia on a great many subjects. I believe the recycling bins entry (we don't use the term trash can) refers to the City of London, not the city of London. They are two different things. Capital C denotes the banking area of about 1 square mile where very few people live but millions work. Small c London means the vast area that includes suburbs, the central and local shopping areas etc and covers what used to be many, many villages and farms but got swallowed up as London became more important and need to expand beyond the site that the Roman occupiers walled in approximately 2000 years ago.

Many of the bins that were removed were cast iron or concrete construction, which makes for excellent fragmentation to create the highest casualty rate. An unpleasant detail that the terrorists used to murderous effect.

That is one of the most annoying things about london, there is no rubish bins to but your waist. It also annoys me in other smaller towns, you can never find a bin when you want one, and then people just throw their rubbish everywhere. I know it is wrong, but sometimes you can see why people throw stuff on the floor.

Been into the "Devils Arse" in Derbyshire about twenty years ago, really interesting with all the varying mineral deposits like stalactites etc....... Lot's of caves and really old copper and zinc mines, to visit in Derbyshire's Peak District. The Speedwell Cavern had a boat trip through the caves and there's a well known Blue John (mineral) mine closeby.

This was such a coincidence!!! I watched this this morning as I was planning a trip for today to the caves in castleton...truly!!!. Sidenote: A quartz type gem called BLUE JOHN is mined from these caves and it is only place on the entire planet wear it is found. Often used to make jewelery and other decorative artifacts.

Those banknotes are non-circulating - so no-one has one to carry around. They're held in the Bank of England as a form of fiscal insurance (don't ask me how that works, reading about it was making my mind spin). And remember that the CITY of London is only a very small area in the middle of Greater London - the rest of it has plenty of recycling bins. The Isle of Man is a Crown Dependency, separate but connected - it's a bit like thinking of Guam as being part of the US. PS - I'm in New Zealand, so you're a lot further from me - the internet is amazing!

I used to live in (north) London & worked shifts in WC1, and on early shifts I'd see mass road sweepers (men with brooms AND road-sweeping vehicles) quickly clearing up yesterday's rubbish that didn't hit the bins. The only difference then (80s), was there were so many more rubbish bins around.

"Æ, mate, that's a letter you find in a bunch of Germanic languages, even in the old days of English and Danish. We call it 'ash,' and it sounds like the 'a' in 'cat.' Nowadays, in English, you see it pop up mostly in borrowed words from other languages, like 'æsthetic' or 'encyclopædia.' But a lot of times, folks just swap it out with 'ae' when they're spelling things out."

For the Trash Cans one, it needs to clarify the distinction between the City of London and Greater London. The fact is referring to the City of London, not Greater London. Greater London is what people normally call London. The City of London is very much smaller, sits inside Greater London, and is roughly the ancient Roman City and now primarily a financial district. Also known as "the square mile" because that's about its size.

Did you know that there isn't a king or queen of England. The last king of England was Edward VI who died in 1553. The last queen of England was Elizabeth I who died in 1603. The City of London is a small area surrounded by Greater London. It is a separate entity that has its own police force which is separate from the Metropolitan Police.

With regard to the thumbnail of the iconic phone boxes, although many have been taken out of service due to the prevalence of mobile technology, some still hang on. Many villages have used them as book swaps, or defibrillator points, but our village has managed to hang to to ours, probably because much of the village does not have a good mobile signal. Although the boxes are very much loved, visually the design by Gilbert Scott is great, they were widely used for urinals, and stunk of cigarettes and wee. I think the last time I had to use one I picked up the receiver and a voice cut in with all sorts of obscenities. It was dark and he might have been watching me, but I felt so cross and told him to stop being silly and to get off the line as I had an important call to make and he did. Also someone had put chewing gum on the receiver and it got in my hair. Why they didn't just add plumbing and make them loos, with the glass made obscure, I really don't know.

Here’s a small fact for you. The best place to see an old red telephone box, is inside the Anglican Cathedral of Liverpool. This is due to the fact that the person that designed the red box also designed the cathedral, and so they decided to install the smallest thing he was famous for designing inside the biggest thing he was famous for designing. Sadly the phone doesn’t work any more, but last I checked it was still there.

Eyup, JT. First of all we love you and Anna's video. Second of all well done for your spot on pronunciation of the county of Derbyshire, as most Americans really struggle with that one in my experience. My partner, Scott was born and raised in Derbyshire and he used to go caving in Castleton down the Devil's Arse when he was young. lol That cave system has a rare stone occurring naturally called 'Blue John' and is the only place on the planet that you can find it. They make jewellery from it. You should look it up, as it is a really beautiful gem. 😊🎉😊

Only about 8600 live in the city of London. I was actually surprised it was that many. They also have their own police force which is the concidered the hardest police force to apply for, you have to be pretty special to get the job. It's a fraction over 1 square mile. I worked there years ago we received extra in our salary each month from the other parts of London called London waiting. We also got more free luncheon vouchers than others working in London. Just a few perks of working the area.
