One of the things that is telling about culture and cultural differences are TV shows. In this video, I talk about Dutch TV shows that I watch regularly or those that I have seen in the past. As an American, I share the differences that I've noticed between Dutch TV and American TV. I also talk about what stood out to me in some of these Dutch TV series. I was surprised to find out that some of TV series are quite popular with the Dutch!

I like to share my experiences of an American expat in the Netherlands. I describe both the unique and everyday aspects of Dutch culture, and life in Holland while enjoying every bit of it!

Unfortunately it doesn't exist anymore, but you can still find it on youtube: "Ter land, ter zee en in de lucht" (translated: By land, by sea and in the air). A game show with multiple disciplines in which contestants had to build there own vehicles, which had to comply with particular regulations, and go down a slope or over ropes, and so on! Started in the 70's (even got worldfamous for it's backwards driving races in DAF-jes, Dutch car with an gearbox that had the same speed backwards as forwards, on circuit of Zandvoort) and ended on the 00's. Would love to see it return.. And participate haha

A typical farmer doesn't get distracted by how he/she will look on TV. It's the kind of perfect down-to-earth as you can get. This will sometimes give some kind of awkward situations, but for the most part it is as real as it can be (on TV) and I guess that's what attracts so many viewers.
@DutchAmericano

This is exactly the thing. Dutch ‘get’ that awkwardness because it is how Dutch Farmers are and maybe even something the modern Dutch person has lost through our history. The original Dutch person has always been difficult with emotions. And in a dating show it’s all about emotions. That creates a tension which garantees that awkardness.

Exactly. The awkwardness creates endearment, which causes u to bond with the character and profit. Its also (especially early on in the series) about city life meeting and learning rural life and vice versa. It’s basically the same formula as Beaty and the Geek, but with farmers and city folk.

Maarten van Rossem is a historian specialising in US politics (his brother and sister are also historians who specialise in architecture and art respectively), and he's become somewhat of a frequent guest on talk shows, initially to talk about US politics, and later just more general. He just sits there and occasionally contributes random facts (for which he can draw attention using his little service bell); officially he also serves as a judge in case there is some ambiguity on whether an answer is right or not.

Maarten van Rossum is a former professor who is very popular because of his somewhat grumpy, but gezellige performances on tv. Apart from that, I read two of his books and let's say I think he is a very wise man, who knows what he is talking about (something you might expect from a University professor). I think they added him to the show exactly because of these two elements: his grumpy gezelligheid and the information he adds when he feels like it. By the way, he also lives in Utrecht.

You don’t need to be avoiding making a negative comment. Its prefectly fine that you don’t like a show. Beste zangers at least the later seasons is the top show for me. It's about 6 singers from very different genres, doing a weekly show for just a singe one of those singers. Getting to know that singer, their genre or something in their past and performing that song they chose, with great respect to each other. So you get classic opera singers doing rap, only in Dutch language performers going to sing Spanish, metal singers doing opera etc... In the last episode of the season they do a duet with one of the contestants they chose and it is fantastic! It's really about musicians getting out of their comfort zone and paying respect to other musicians, and the results are so respectful and breathtaking!!!!

The Belgian shows you mention, came out of "Woestijnvis", production company that had a Midas touch in the late 90s. Some extremely talented tv makers were working there. TV shows were usually only 2 or 3 seasons, and then they would have something new. The company still exists, and still makes really good shows, but the miracle is gone (and some of the talents have their own companies now, or are retired). And so yes, they created De Slimste Mens, De Mol, Man Bijt Hond, but many many others, some have really become cultural references in Flanders (I think of "In De Gloria" and "Het Eiland").

Between christmas and new years there is another quiz show that's a lot of fun that I would totally recommend. It's a quiz show around music also using bn'ers. It also takes place in a bar and in normal times they also interview random normal people in the bar on music. It's called popquiz a gogo. But you do have to like music from the top2000 (the radio2 list because it is centred around that) Regarding de slimste mens and the guy randomly talking. He is a historicus and is the judge of the show. He gives additional back ground information and has a bit of a cult following. Some people love him and find him hilarious others hate him. But he is a bn'er himself. In the Belgium show they have a similar situation with 2 judges but there it has more of a comedy factor rather then the informational factor in the Dutch show.

For me the charm of BZV is the awkwardness. Everyone is struggling to navigate the social situation. The women don't want to actively compete with each other and are expected to take that 'the farmer will pick whoever is right for him' high road while still trying to sneak in a personal moment to have a better chance of being picked. The farmer is struggling to be fair and balanced in how much attention each 'candidate' gets. Everyone is struggling with their own hopes and expectations and disappointments and all the while they are milking cows while discussing these things. I sometimes can't bear the awkwardness but it's fascinating to watch. It also makes them very relatable, which is why you get emotionally invested. And at the same time there are also some really satisfying moments where two people you hoped would end up together find each other and it's heartwarming.

in dutch TV there is a lot of "meta gaming" as in radio shows pick up on tv shows with reactions interviews etc. like you have radio stations that will interview some players of who is the mole, or dj's dropping hints or rogue ideas radio adverts etc... sometimes even radio news ... same goes for farmer seeks wife, the gossip on the radio shows can be insane ... like turn on radio10 or radio 538, probably also the radio 3 when it is from public tv

Wie is de Mol is really a brilliant show, it really becomes fun when you step in to Hercule Poirot or Sherlock Holmes's shoes and try to find out who is sabotaging the show for real. There is a lot of sabotaging going on off course, by candidates trying to pull suspicion on themselves to have the other candidates falsely suspect them and make a bad test. But the locations, the historic beauty or natural beauty of the scenerey, the bucket list stuff that people get to do, such as flying to an island by helicopter or ziplining between buildings, those are all cherries on the cake and the sum of all these super cool feats makes this show a pure joy to watch.

Check out the series "van Rossem verteld" by RTV Utrecht, where van Rossem leads you on fascinating tours around Utrecht over the centuries. I think I've viewed all the episodes on youtube, I absolutely loved them. I lived in Utrecht in 1971. Now I would love to return and visit each and every place he covered. By the way, I enjoy your videos. You have interesting insights. As a 11 year old American kid living in Utrecht for a year in 1971, I think I just loved everything about the Netherlands, but probably wouldn't be able to articulate the differences between it and the US, except for the Dutch love of karnemelk, drop, hagelslag and gestompte muisjes. You also provide me insights into the USA of my sons, who are your age.

For other Mole-fans: the Belgians have a series too, but it still uses non-famous people. Their reactions are more authentic and honestly more interesting to watch. They're also _much_ more daring in their set-up. In season 7 they started _without a mole_ and chose one during shooting. Season 6 started with all of them ... weeeell, you'll have to see for yourself. I still watch the Dutch one, but really the Belgian one is just plain better. There are also multiple groups organizing WidM events on their own. They're not as lavish as the TV-shows, of course, but still great fun.

Though I am one of the few that doesn't really watch Boer zoekt vrouw. What I think that people like about the series is the relaxed pace. It shows a bit the calmer side of the Netherlands where everything is not rushed. To understand what Maarten van Rossum does during "de slimste mens" I think it is good you watch one of the belgium shows. The idea behind it is that they have someone to sort of break the pace of the quiz. In Belgium it are comedians (sometimes from the Netherlands), in the Netherlands we have Maarten van Rossum who sometimes is funny because he is so grumpy.
@qazatqazah
@qazatqazah 3 жыл бұрын
FYI: Maarten van Rossem is a retired university professor of history, who specialized in the history of America. As such, he acquired fame as an expert on American issues. His grumpy style and dry humor are not for everyone, but many people find him entertaining. In "de slimste mens" his formal role is that of a game judge, but he's mostly there to entertain with random facts.

Maybe you missed this.... Met het Mes op Tafel is a trivia quiz mixed with poker. Every round has four questions. Your amount of good answers (0-4) decides how good your "hand" is. Players can pay the blind, raise and call, just like in a game of poker. Players don't use pokerchips, but gamble with real money.

Hi Eva, i watched this episode again and when you told about the dutch show DE SLIMSTE MENS i thought about another show that only is on tv once every year. I think you would like it, it is called DE NATIONALE IQ TEST, what translates to the national iq test. It is interactive then you can do the test as well at the same time while you watch it and using the nationale iq test app. On the show itself are a bunch of BNers and a big stage with people split into groups. At the end of the questionnaire they are going to start over but now they tell you the right answers and you get your own iq score on the app. And they are going to name the winners of the BNers and the groups. It is really fun to do and you get a great understanding of your and your girlfriends knowledge. Hope you don't miss it this year.

I used to watch "Met het mes op tafel" with my parents with the original host Joost Prinsen. What you forgot to mention was the gamble element, where the participants could outbid their opponents on the most right answers. De title of the show refers to a dutch saying, negotiating with the knife on the table. Meaning it is very serious.

I don’t like this show and I don’t think it’s funny, so I only saw it once. He has a not so nice voice to listen to and his topics are mostly about being funny by humiliating a person. Mostly a person in power like a politician, a businessman or just a celebrity, or a group of people. People that can hardly defend themselves against this ‘humorous’ attack, they just have to except being the laughing stock and hope it’ll blow over soon. I heard he hardly attacks left wing politicians, probably because he is left wing himself. Especially right wing politicians are a thankful object of his humor. But he is indeed very successful, every Monday morning (literally every Monday morning) a part of his show is repeated in the radio news at the section ‘what was on the talk show last night item’, just when I am driving to work. So boring. I think the whole editorial staff of this news show is watching Arjan Lubach every Sunday evening, so not original. I’m so glad he announced to stop broadcasting his show in 2021. Although he will be back during the elections in March, probably to support left wing parties with his humor.

About Dutch tv, you definitely should watch some tv shows for children. That’s the most Dutch tv you can get. My favorite is Kletspraat. A show where children learn the difference between science based facts and nonsense. With very funny presentation. Another one of my favorites is Abel, where a man together with a child makes a cake, while interviewing the child. In the past there is the excellent show must see show Theo and Thea. Words like discuzeuren and bombanellas are coming from this show. There is dokter Corrie. Last week I watched an episode where dokter Corrie demonstrates how to make an origami vagina.
