The Japanese lost 110 experienced pilots and many experienced mechanics as well as the other crew members for a total of 3,057 killed and 37 captured. They also lost a total of 248 aircraft a heavy cruiser sunk, one damaged and 2 destroyers damaged. If I recall correctly, the Japanese Navy was only turning out about 100 pilots a year before the war. Experienced mechanics were probably at a premium, also. Add that to the four experienced admirals lost, and four fleet carriers lost and it’s easy to see how devastating this was to the Japanese war machine.
