Bagels are bagels though, the issue is that people are more familiar with bad foods than good ones so something being extremely good is because they've had little access to it. Most bagels are frozen and baked even in general supermarkets and bakeries. Bagels have extremely dense centers so I kinda avoid em as I get a upset stomach.

There's probably 2 things that would ahve shocked her 1) McDonalds being stupendously expensive. In Japan a BigMac MEAL costs 800 yen which is like $6USD. You can barely get a BigMac itself for that little 2) Ootoya is a cheap eats chain in Japan. Entire meals rarely cost more than 1000 yen. There's one branch in NYC. Everytime I go there there's always a few Japanese tourists wanting 'a taste of home' that come in all excited, then literally jump out of their seats when they see an edamame appetizer costs more than an entire meal back home.

For burgers (at least in the American front range) you have to go to local joints to get the good ones. Look for places that have a bar along side dinner tables. That means they have an liquor license and for the most part chain restaurants don't go though the extra effort to obtain one. Another type of restaurant to keep an eye out for is an ol' style 1950's diner. The ones that have the vinyl swivel stools and booth tables up against the walls. Look up some pictures of "Gunther Toody's" for reference. And if you go to one order a milkshake.
@StochasticUniverse
@StochasticUniverse 15 күн бұрын
McDonald's burgers are perfectly fine, which is why they've taken over the world -- but therein lies the problem. Because McDonald's exists everywhere, the ones in America aren't really different or special. If you've eaten McDonald's anywhere, you've basically had it in America, too. (This was a thing that came up when Raora said she'd never tried American cheese -- if you've eaten a McDonald's cheeseburger anywhere in the world, you've had American cheese, because it doesn't have to be made in America, only made to be a certain type of specification). People sometimes think that the McDonald's in America will somehow be better than the ones overseas, but they're not. The whole point of fast food is standardization. The McDonald's Corporation is literally trying to produce the same product everywhere (although there are regional differences sometimes, based on things like food availability or differences in the local palate). But the entire goal is sameness.

@@StochasticUniverse Nahhh, McD's in America is actively worse than pretty much everywhere else in the world because America just has worse standards in all. Here it's bottom of the barrel and it's not even cheap to justify it anymore. You get some seasonal offers and that's it, not to mention the perpetually broken ice cream machines. Even among chains, just go to Wendy's and you blow McD's away instantly. Tons more options in food, drinks, and sides, they actually have some decent mix-and-match value offers and DO have unique local options. And even then Wendy's elsewhere blows american wendy's away, look up the video of Fubuki going through a Wendy's menu and there's all kinds of crazy cool stuff we don't get here.

A diner burger is honestly the gold standard in America. Quarter pounder with fries and slaw is the quintessential American staple, though for NYC I'd suggest a dog. The metro area has the best dogs in the country imo. The very best ones are from vendors hanging around outside DMV or transit hubs.

Not really. I’ve found Maccas is better overseas everywhere than in the US. In the US, Maccas is the default cheap fast food. Internationally though, they already have their cheap fast food brands. So American McDonalds is gonna be the standard, and when it goes to other countries, it's gonna start with that standard menu and then add specialties that are adapted to the local cuisine. American fast food is notorious for getting the order wrong and giving bad service. Especially in big cities. You do generally get good service in the locations in smaller towns and such.
