Also ignore the smartarse's who dismiss less technical football, the vast majority of teams don't have access to the 200 or so players capable of that kind of thing. There is a real art to surviving in the premier league and not having access to much of that quality for example Brentford or Fulham last season.

A lot of people give Dyche crap for the style of his football. But not every team is blessed with the quality of a top 6 team. It's quite common for a team to get promoted, being the best team in The Championship - and then go out and try to play the same style in the Premier League. And it's often lauded and celebrated by TV pundits - but quite often, those teams get picked apart by better quality players and relegated straight back down to the Championship. No one was talking about how cool Burnley were, but they finishing higher in the table than teams with far, far better players than them. Those long ball to a big forward might not be the most visually beautiful football, but I sure as hell would rather support a team that was winning games than one that is playing attractive football and getting spanked every week. Burnley ultimately fired Dyche, but I think he's still well liked by their fans for everything he acheived with them. And this season he came into an Everton team that looked devoid of any kind of hope, destined for relegation - and he saves them from relegation - beating Arsenal in the process. Again, not super trendy football that you're going to see cool KZbin compilations of - but he got the best out of the players he had at his disposal.

About every kid who learns football will learn 442 as their first playstyle due to its ease of play. Its a system national teams fall back to often as well cause they get players from different clubs and unless really talented, drilling a 433 or more complex system in is not always possible so they default back to 442. Its not the flashiest, often looked down upon, but its the basis of modern football from which the other styles developed.
@GaminGilmore
@GaminGilmore Жыл бұрын
For sure for sure. One of the nice things about the 442 is that it doesn’t necessarily require specific good players, like the 433 and 4231 need.
@ezekielduran4386
@ezekielduran4386 Жыл бұрын
@@GaminGilmore You're exactly correct. It can compensate where you lack technicality and explosiveness. It's actually good if you want to have a possession and build up. There is always space to be found by any player. I think when you have the 4231 or 433 your wingers are too rigidly placed. They opposition knows when they get the ball they will look to attack the fullback. That's not true of a 442. You might attack or look to pass and move inside allowing the fullback behind you to fill in or make a deep run. To me personally I think it can be a dominant formation if you have the players who are smart enough to be fluid in their movements with the others around them. If they all understand when one takes up a certain position or makes a certain run the closest two or three need to respond with specific movements that maximize the space.
@manabuhorikita969
@manabuhorikita969 Жыл бұрын
since you know that positions in football are fluid, the best asnwer I can give in regards to the 4-4-2 is that it's the most used formation when pressing nowadays, its shape is really really good for applying pressure. You saw lateral pressure in this video and that's how it is used by teams that naturally choose the 4-4-2, but other teams that use different systems still use it for vertical pressure when trying to prevent a team from building plays from the goalkeeper. Basically I think it can be called the most suffocating formation in football.

I'm an Arsenal fan, and his style really works. He brutally defeated us with his low-scoring defensive 4-4-2 physicality. Midtable teams running 4-3-3 weren't even close to mounting that kind of a challenge. Burnley didn't have Neymar, but Dyche was able to truly get the most out of his players. Nick Pope and Kieran Trippier he mentioned are one of the best premier league GKs and RBs, respectively, now starting every game for Newcastle who surprised everyone this season finishing 4th. And they started their journey with Dyche.

I used to play in a 4-4-2 as a goalkeeper. From a defensive POV it makes life much easier. As the 4 mids are lined up right in front of the 4 defenders, it's super easy to stay organised and compact. This compactness, used with an offside trap is also really potent going forward. The opposition cannot get out of their half if your team has a fast defender.

You have to bare in mind that Dyche is coming from a defensive point of view because of the club he's at are looking to either survive in the league or to push for midtable, so he's looking to make his team to be hard to beat. I think to put it very simply: The reason you force teams to one side is that you can keep your defense very compact. If they are allowed to play through the middle, it will stretch your defense quite thin since you have to cover passes in both directions. If we force them to lets say the right hand side, you only have to cover options to the left.

There's different ways to play 4-4-2 or every other formation. Pep Guardiola played 4-4-2 with 2 false 9s, and Sachi at Milan for a while and neither of them were reactive/defensive low block teams. So it depends on the players anc coaches. Dyche was right, teams played 4-3-3 since the 1960s, Brazil pioneering the formation at the 1962 World Cup.

Usually when one of the center backs is known for being better passing the ball, the center forward will cover him so the other center back is the one who has to start the play, and it usually makes them lose the ball really fast because he just throws it away as far as possible, so you recover the possession and begin again. 4-4-2 is usually used to defend close to the area and go counter-attack, as you know, while 4-3-3 is usually used to have possession and domain the game. The beauty of football makes that any team can hang on and score a single goal in a corner to win the game, no matter how good they are, if you don't give space it's really hard to receive a goal.

The 4-4-2 was very prominent some time ago. It is a good system for defence, but it is often hard to generate good offence from it because your 2 forwards are always covered by 4 defenders. That caused a lot of boring an uneventfull games when two teams with a 4-4-2 formation faced each other and nobody was able to generate some offence and/or willing to risk switching to a different formation or moving midfielders or wingbacks up for more pressure on the defending team. Because of that the 4-4-2 got a bad reputation with fans who would rather want to see games with more goals and more offence than those with much focus on a stable defence and tactic that end with a 0-0 draw.

The 442 is the spine of many defensive gameplans, so every team knows it even if it's not the formation they step out and go for. I think one consideration is how much emphasis is there on possession and how fast an attack builds. As Dyche says, it's offensive potential depends a lot on how fast your team transitions and is built with the expectation of not having possession a lot of the time. Pair this one up with the video on Mourninho--even past the game that he covers--Inter was ready to absorb pressure (and which they're going to need to be ready tomorrow). Without muddling things too much, I think the tempo you want to play at based on the players and speed in possession and how much pressing. Playerwise, I do think the 442 leans on a 9 who's always going to be under the most pressure, someone who'd naturally have more outlets in the 433.

I´d say a plain 4-4-2 is an "underdog" tactic. Sean Dyche at Burnley had no players that were technically good at all but still managed to keep them in the PL for years. Sweden used a 4-4-2 and got to the quater final in the world cup with some really poor players. Atletico Madrid used a 4-4-2 and got to the CL final with a team who was worse than many others. It works but it´s difficult for a top team to use and dominate games.
@Machinationstudio

Often with a 442 there are 2 strikers. They can be one tall target man and one fast striker, or maybe both are tall. Route One is the tactic of the technically weaker team. Boot the ball to a tall big lad up front who can hold up the ball, and create chaos in the opposition box with multiple runners. A less technical team can disproportionately benefit from that chaos.

That quote about yardage is so true. In the modern game, players' positions are flexible and the roles are more important than positions. A player could start as a #10 and play as a box-to-box midfielder. So the formation doesn't really matter that much, what matters are the specialized tasks the players carry out. Anyone can lineup in 4-3-3, won't make them into Guardiola’s Barca.

On your question about the counter attack, defensive Teams like Burnley will often try and use a solitary striker as an outlet so you’re right that counter attack is very hard. The best that can often be expected is to hope the striker can receive the ball, and shield it long enough for other players to get forward.

In football you most of the time only need 2 or 3 players for a counter attack, yes they have a lot of players far back but that means the opposition doesnt have a lot of players back themselvs so as soon as you win possession you lauch the ball to your target man(the number 9 that stays up) or into the space for them to run onto the ball, hold up for a few seconds for the second 9 and a third player to get up and you attack with those three against the two or 3 defenders that are left back. Its hard work but its effective, most teams cant play tiki taka and have to rely on hard work rather than skill

Theres a lot of variants of a 4-4-2 that a lot of teams work. Portugal National team often plays it with no wingers and with a diamond in the midfield ( 2 CM, one 10 and one CDM) where the strikers (one or both) open wide to create space for the 10 and the oposite side midfielder and striker to attack the central areas. Benfica also did it and went to 2 Europa league finals with a 4-4-2 (both the tradicional and the diamond variants).

The idea of leading/forcing opponents to play out from a side of the pitch is valid for all formations. This offers three main advantages. 1) Your players will easily be able to face the ball carrier with little loss of spacial awareness. This is harder to do when the ball is progressed through the middle of the pitch. 2) Space on the opposite side can be vacated to create numerical advantages in defence. This is beacause a side-to-side cross has enough traveltime in air to allow players to move over and readjust. 3) Forcing the ball out wide increases the distance to dangerous areas and thus reduce the likeliness of concede a goal. It also reduces the awailable angles for throupasses. From the middle of the pitch passes can be angles to both right and left. From a wide area the only angle available is towards the middle. Not counting progression further down the side since this will not by itself create scoring chances.

When you are in such a defensive state and you want to counter attack, you leave your 9 on the center of the pitch since there is no offside on your side of the pitch, so you can have him "park" himself literally on the starting point, that will also force to have one and most of the times both of the center backs with him. Once you recover the ball, you want to kick not to the 9, but to the space between the mid circle and the goalkeepers area, and let the 9 make a run for it, as they are usually faster than the defenders. If he is able to gain their backs, he will usually be in a 1 on 1 aganits the goalkeeper, all with one sigle pass.

i think that not many teams play a 442 like it was in the 60's through to the late 90's. Most play it now more like a 451 when defending and then a 442 when attacking, so they are looking for a player in the number 10 role who can both get back when required but also get into the opposition box and provide goals and create chances. The biggest problem with the 442 is getting over run in the middle of the pitch, most oppositions play with 3 central midfielders, so they always have that 1 man advantage. But if you can overcome that with the AM dropping deep or a wide player dropping into to make the 3, it can work well. Some teams go to a truer 442 when they are chasing the game to try and overload the box and have two goal scorers in there.

it is still very much used here in the brazilian league. In the middle section you could have two more defensive players with two fast wingers that will turn into a 424 formation while in posession or attacking. If done right its very efffective. Also, if you don't have very skilled wingers, but if they are very disciplined, then, you can have a more defensive team with the wingers teaming up with the halfbacks. It really depends on how good a players you have. Sometimes thow strikers are less mobile but are tall and great headers, then you get a lot of crossing going on. Sometimes those two strikers are very mobile and go out of the box a lot to help with the playmaking. You can also have one or two of those in the middle that have box-to-box characteristics, with them getting inside the opponents box being a surprise attacker in the scoring zone. It's a simple but effective formation, with a fair amount of variation that has been in the game for over 70 years... got to respect that

The 442 (as all the formations) has advantages and disadvantages, the important thing is to recognice them and be prepare to adapt and to change (transition), the other important thing to remember is that some formations are used not because of the rivals, but (like the coach said) because of the characteristic and best development (improvement) of my own players. The football most basic unit to understand is The triangle, if you understand how to move the ball in the middle of the opposing team with passes between 3 players it creates movement and spaces. From that basic concept, you could choose based on the hability of your players how to aproach to a game plan or formation, what is easier for them to implement or understand, how they can create spaces and hallways to move the ball to create danger and oportunities, and how to close spaces to the opposite team. You could use 3 lanes, 4 lanes or even 5 lanes tactics, and plan the movements and positions in the transition. The truth is that at high level nothing is simple, but to be honest the rules (actions and premises which guide the intention and the desicion making process of a player in the field) and basic principles of the 442 are simpler and easier to understand and execute in a proper way than other formations.

It's always difficult create a counter attack if your team is almost complete defending the box. They are scenarios to train by manager. For example you can switch the system in this case.

So I turned 30 this year. I played since age 5 here in Colorado. The 442 was ran by basically all teams when i was growing up. I dont remember seeing anyone run a different formation until we were about 13 or 14 years old. And even then my teams always ran the 442 and we excelled against any competition. In high school we did it with the 4411 variety and looked for the lower striker to make deep runs beyond the higher striker and the higher striker come for a short ball if possible. It creates confusion for the other teams but we wouldn't be particular about that being our only possible movements. The way i was taught the 442 was a interchangeable and fluid formation. With outside defenders making runs up the field the center mid or winger was instructed to stay and replace his position in case we lost possession. That way we were never caught out on a counter. It did happen a few times, but not often. Or the Cm would make a run diagonal and the winger or striker would drop and fill in. It was a case of everyone potentially playing anywhere. Even our CBs would make runs when it was called for. We also did something a little different with our back line and im curious how it sounds to others that know the game well. We did a diamond in the back 4 employing a stopper and sweeper. The stopper was great for stopping short passes in the middle and we never really let people get close to being offside. We let the sweeper drop and be ready for all long balls. It worked wonders for years, hut eventually around 12 years old we did need to shift to a regular back line as the center defenders usually got too worn out as with aging ours and oppnents skill improved to the point that a striker would have a feast on a singular cb and wide full backs.

Another great video. 442 is still pretty common. Dyche doesn't really get at this in his explanation but the reason it's kind of the default in a lot of places is because of how balanced it is. Manchester United and alot of Premier League teams in the past weren't viewed as the most technically brilliant players compared to some other regions, because the English game really took advantage of being very fast, very physical, very intense. One thing you'll see today is that even teams that don't use a 442, will still fall into a sort of 442 when they are defending because of how compact it can get. Really hard to break down. The 433 rose to popularity as a way to try and break down the 442 by outnumbering them in the midfield. Great 433 sides have great midfielders that are excellent at playing through the center. 442 never really went away and has always been popular but the 433 was kinda the new hotness for the last 10-15 years or so and the 442 is kind of coming back into prominence again 442 teams take advantage of the width and have an emphasis on those wing players along the sideline. Alot of really good counterattacking teams play with the 442. It's not always a one to one relation but counter attacking teams often play in 442 and possession teams often play a 433. The game is fluid though and managers will tweak things from team to team to best take advantage of their players' strengths

I think it was Lampard, he said that when they (England) played teams, a lot play with 3 in the midfielder so him and Gerrard be out numbered. You have the diamond which gives the full back license to move forward. This is good for attacks from wide and especially going forward in wide position. When Lampard and Sidwell played for Chelsea in a 4-4-2, Alan Hansen i believe said how sidwell and Lampard had a good understanding in how their partnership worked, one was advanced, Lampard, but was on the left central position. Im aware im not making a lot of sense.

Football coaches borrow a lot of concepts from other sports, including American Football. The quarterback isn't exclusive of American Football, as matter of fact, football teams usually have at least 2 players, sometimes 3, that can play that role. One is usually a CB and he's passing the ball 30-40-50 yards ahead to a winger or a striker. Then you have the CAM who also attracts players and sends those deep passes to a forward who's making a run, even if it's only a 10 yards or less. That's something you see on every American Football game too. It's just that it's much harder to pass with your feet, as you already have experienced.

At 6:00 - this is also what Jesse marsch American manager says, however on Oracles statistics Man City are the widest team on the ball in the PL. What you want to prevent is the opposition switching play from one side to the other because this opens up lots of space while you al try to shift over.

I'm no expert, but I think Sean Dyche is more into the older typical English tactics; sit deep, win possession and then long ball for counter attack. Maybe not the most modern & exciting approach, but it is a classic for a reason. So his version of 4-4-2 suits the style best.

in general if you defend you want to push the ball to the outside best case right back or left back because the player has less options to pass to and is easier to press with more than one player. you will let one or two opponent players on the other wing unmarked to gain a numerical advantage.

I maybe out of season because I haven't watch football for years since I come back to my hometown to take care of my sick mother. However it used to be lot of different between how football are play in Spanish, Italy and England(epl). La liga are more fluid and individual player are more important but in epl, formation and structure are more visible. You see how they move and they move as a team. However there are still superstar influence and how the team put it to advantage is interesting to see. Chelsea under Mourinho come to my mind when he fully use Arjen Robben to counter attack and how quickly the other team support them. Man Utd during the early day of CR are also interesting because as a winger, they fully use his speed for quick counter and his skill to blast through defender.

In a 442. That is called a second striker. Not a 10. A 10 is the centre of the 3 in the 4231. Let me explain the difference between a 10 and a false 9. They literally functioned the same, they are the same profile of players. Difference is, when you play a 10, usually he has a pure goalscorer in front of him, and that goalscorer is usually a goal hanger doing little in the build up, just waiting for chances. And one day, a manger thinks, “when my team is playing against a 11 players low block, how about instead of having 10 players creating for 1 man, let’s have 11 creative players creating for each other.” And so the pure goalscorer is replaced by a creative player who drops deep to create.
@joe256
@joe256 Жыл бұрын
@@thierryhenry674 It could be explained like this, but I think for someone learning the game, it's a bit less confusing if you just keep all the positions numbered. Using 4-4-2 as a basis, you can give every position a number, and then adjust other formation from there. This is because, just like you explained, the roles are determined by the coach. Look at Pep's Barca. Messi basically started at 7, performed 10's role in the build up, but ended up as 9 in the final third. How would you explain Messi's role in that team to someone learning the game(especially if they were interested in tactics), without using numbers? That's why I mentioned 10 being a support striker, because 10 can be a lot of things. Besides, we have seen 10s playing as support strikers. Felix, Rooney, Bergkamp, you name them.

the first thing to know about today's game is that formations are not set in stone in modern football what dyche is explaining here is a very simplistic and safe way of using the 4-4-2. this formation thx to its balance still see play today and it's basically the base for most modern formations for example today you might see a team star as a 4-4-2 but transition to a 4-1-4-1 this is prob the most im not letting u play through the middle formation and if u wanna score u need a moment of absolute brilliance. and it can also transition into an ultra attacking formation for ball possession like have the 2 cbs stay back , 1 midfielder to drop into the space between the defenders and midfielders to be the connection between them , have the other 3 midfielders advance and position themselves on the half spaces to have a threat and a chance to play horizontally in front of their box and occasionally make a run may it be a real run into space or a dummy run to attract opposition players to make space. have your wingers tuck into the centre of the box and your fullbacks run up and provide the width this turns the 4-4-2 into a 2-3-5 of course this requires utmost precision and knowledge of your role . basically every team nowadays plays like this total football a style in which a player is not locked to a certain position , created by the dutch and popularized by the likes of manchester united with ferguson and specially guardiola´s barcelona like since pep did it everyone has had to adapt to it and it changed football like a lot

12:12 normally you don't, you can try to get a throw in or send the ball far as possible, making the opponents to restart the system. But if you really trust in your players skills you can try a fast pass triangulation. Tite normally leave the 9 in the center to recept this long ball and create time to the team leave the defense, but he relies on strong and tall 9 players, which doesn't worked well with national team (Brazil) bc of the characteristics of Gabriel Jesus...

It's not a perfect analogy, but a 4-4-2 is to the modern game, as a standard 2 back set, QB-under-center offense is to American football. In the end, a formation is just a formation. Yes, a given formation may lend itself more readily to a particular style of play. But formations do not necessarily dictate tactics. A 4-4-2 team may indeed play fairly conservative, defensive, counter attacking football. But I've seen creative uses of the 4-4-2 that were as intricate, attack-minded and creative as any more contemporary system. And he's right - the 4-3-3, while fashionable at the moment, has been used in some form or fashion, since the 1950s and even earlier. Just like the modern passing game in American football... People think of old school football from the 1970s as run first, run second, then run some more. But the Chargers in the NFL and BYU in college were chucking the ball all over the place 50 times per game. It's cyclical and evolutionary, just like any sport.

The thing that doesn’t get spoken about much with tactics and might get missed by newcomers to the sport is that no 2 pitches are the same. The fact pitches are different can also impact the tactics you can use, for example there is no one set pitch size only minimum and maximum sizes and each club often sets the pitch size to how they desire to play, for example a team that likes short passing are more likely to be playing on smaller pitch (though not always) and teams that like to play long balls or perhaps believe they have more athleticism might play on larger pitches.

So I think one thing people get stuck with in terms of formations is a lack of fluidity, because they are starting points. But they change constantly depending on the players you have in your system and the roles you are giving them. Take Man City this season for example. On the team sheet they will be a 433. But that is just the players in positions. When defending the wingers and 2 of the defenders will drop back leaving Haaland with de Bruyne or gundo off him in a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1. Then they get the ball, stones will elbow into a midfield leaving a back 3 as the rest comes across and they form a box midfield with him and rodri at the base and the two attacking midfielders ahead of them in a WM(3223 or 325) formation. Transitioning of play and specific times they can resemble a 433, but football is far more Fluid than that. And that’s why we love it

so the 442 was very popular in south america and in italy in late 80s until early 2000s. The most important team to look in that moment was brazil world cup champion in 1994. It was a total classic 442. 442 was very popular in brazil because it was the best way to use 2 types os player that are abudant here, fast and ofensive left/right backs (check for Roberto Carlos the goat of LB) and you can easly acomodate 2 classic playmakers in the middle. The transformation to the 443 era wich we live now was made by replacing 1 playermaker and the second striker for 2 wingers. Theres no winger in 442. The amplitude is provided by the the LB/RB The last great team I can recollect that played a classic 442 and suceed was Flamengo in 2019. It was a magical team to learn from. In Europe i think its rare. Even the weird 343 and 352 is used more often than 442.

A 4-4-2 is good when your team is not necessarily favourite to win a match; it's Ymore defensively sound, despite having 1 less central midfielder, due to its ease of organisation. You've got 2 strikers to hold the ball up when your team isn't as good technically as the opponents, so you may favour playing a long ball as opposed to trying to pass the ball out from the back; having wingers isn't really good for that because wingers tend to be shorter and weaker than your average striker, and especially in this formation you'd deliberately buy strikers who are tall, strong and can hold the ball up. If you don't have ability to pass the ball out from the back, trying to do so is just going to see you lose the ball and give the opponents the chance to win it back deep into your half and when you're out of position.

I drew up my Premiere League team of the year and it ended up being a 3-3-3-1. Apparently it's one Luis Enrique employed at Barcelona, including in their 6-1 throttling of PSG. Have to keep that in mind when you watch this. That is not a knock on Sean, actually it's amazing what he is able to achieve with teams other managers would just not be able to achieve with.
