One of the reasons these attacking plays are so impressive is because of how Ronaldo (and other successful strikers) handle the 'offside rule'. This rule states that the furthest player(s) back in defense creates an invisible horizontal 'line' that attackers cannot pass unless: 1) A teammate kicks the ball your way, 2) You are already in possession of the ball, or 3) You steal the ball from a defender. For example, if a teammate passes you the ball while you are too far ahead of the defense, then you are considered 'offside', which awards the opposing team a free kick. Without this rule the players could technically go anywhere at any time. With it you have to be strategic. That's why you often see professional defenders forming a straight 'line' to take advantage of the rule, potentially catching attackers offside. As an attacker you have to time your runs so that you are behind the defense as your teammate releases the ball, and run past the offside line at the right time when it's legal. You'll see what I mean when you watch professional games / play FIFA XD.

Good effort trying to explain the offside rule but a couple huge mistakes: "player(s) back? so 9 defenders back would create a line? and a fail in your 1st exception (thats precisely the point of the offside rule that you don't receive a pass while being offside) Important exceptions you didnt mention: you cant be offside on your own half and you cant be offside when receiving a throw in Short version of the rule: A player is in an offside position if he is nearer to the opponents' goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

Your principal is sort of right, CTE being talked about in soccer is still in the early stages but it's gaining momentum. In some countries they've banned heading for youth players or changed some rules like no throw-ins to reduce the amount of headers. There's not much action for the senior teams though, you still see players going in a fencing position getting checked by doctors and then play on. A nightmare for defenders, but a different kind than Messy. His shot was outrageously powerful and long distance shots had his own unique "double curve" (knuckleball). He jumped too much, ran to fast and was too athletic. His precision and sustained performance over 20 years are products of his obsessive training and preparation, absolute perfectionist. They've gone head to head MANY times, the last section of this video, the 'El Clasico dribbling, passing, goals' part was him vs Barcelona(team which Messi played for for 17 years, is now at Paris Saint-Germain) they went head to head a few times while Ronaldo was at Manchester United, and after going to Real Madrid(El Clasico is any match between Real Madrid & Barcelona)they went head to head every season at least twice. When you dribble with the ball you should not look at it. Most of the time when you dribble your head should be up so you know where your teammates are and to look at your opponents feet so you can go past him. This is tricky sometimes because you need to rely on your instincts and coordination to play with the ball without looking at it most of the time. And they are not going to remove headers from the professional men's football only for the little kids like under 10 or something

Messi is "the artist" and mostly a natural talent, he also is a game maker with a great vision of the game on the pitch who dribbles and sort of avoids physical contact. The thing about isolating the conversation to those two, is that people come to believe that whomever is second becomes an afterthought as a result. As much as I believe that Messi is the player with the most impact and virtue of the two, Ronaldo is historically elite, and there are not 10 players in the history of the game that are at his level. Messi: Short, lower center of gravity, can squeeze between a bunch of defenders and has a great left foot. Ronaldo: Has everything else and still can pass through a bunch of defenders (in speed and physique) and mastered he's weaker foot, the left. Messi is not as strong with headers, body strength, speed. Messi was born with the amazing talent he has, it's natural to him and we're so lucky to see him play. Ronaldo is the product of a kid that dreamt of being the best in the world and never once stopped working for what he believes in. Ronald is Power and Messi is Smoothest. Ronald has better pace and kicking power. He use a lots of tricks in his dribbling. The reason why he stopped doing that is cuz of his 2014 injury. Which forced him to change his playstyle or give up his career. Messi don't use tricks. He play the most simple football. He just run through people and good luck stopping that. At the same time he can pass deadly passes. Messi can find space even if there is no space.
