Game time rules (taken from Wikipedia) "A game consists of four quarters and a timekeeper officiates their duration. At the professional level, each quarter consists of 20 minutes of play, with the clock being stopped for instances such as scores, the ball going out of bounds or at the umpire's discretion, e.g. for serious injury. Lower grades of competition might employ shorter quarters of play. The umpire signals time-off to stop the clock for various reasons, such as the player in possession being tackled into stagnant play. Time resumes when the umpire signals time-on or when the ball is brought into play. Stoppages cause quarters to extend approximately 5-10 minutes beyond the 20 minutes of play. 6 minutes of rest is allowed before the second and fourth quarters, and 20 minutes of rest is allowed at half-time." I hope that makes sense.

Field rules, number of players on the ground (also taken from Wiki) "Australian rules football playing fields have no fixed dimensions but at senior level are typically between 135 and 185 metres (148 and 202 yd) long and 110 and 155 metres (120 and 170 yd) wide wing-to-wing. The field, like the ball, is oval-shaped, and in Australia, cricket grounds are often used. No more than 18 players of each team (or, in AFL Women's, 16 players) are permitted to be on the field at any time. Up to four interchange (reserve) players may be swapped for those on the field at any time during the game. In Australian rules terminology, these players wait for substitution "on the bench"-an area with a row of seats on the sideline. Players must interchange through a designated interchange "gate" with strict penalties for having too many players from one team on the field. In addition, some leagues have each team designate one player as a substitute who can be used to make a single permanent exchange of players during a game. There is no offside rule nor are there set positions in the rules; unlike many other forms of football, players from both teams may disperse across the whole field before the start of play. However, a typical on-field structure consists of six forwards, six defenders or "backmen" and six midfielders, usually two wingmen, one centre and three followers, including a ruckman, ruck-rover and rover. Only four players from each team are allowed within the centre square (50 metres or 55 yards) at every centre bounce, which occurs at the commencement of each quarter, and to restart the game after a goal is scored. There are also other rules pertaining to allowed player positions during set plays (that is, after a mark or free kick) and during kick-ins following the scoring of a behind."

Scoring goes, you get a goal (6 points) if you kick the ball through the two main tall sticks in the middle, or it is kicked and it bounces through between the two tall goal posts. If it's touched by an opposition player after it is kicked but before it goes over the goal line, then it's just a single point instead. Not 6 points. If you miss the two main tall sticks in the middle, and kick it through one tall stick and one shorter stick, it is called a behind (also only 1 point). Switching goal ends occurs at the start of each quarter.
@jarredtremain4644
@jarredtremain4644 11 ай бұрын
6 points if kick ball anyway in air or soccer on ground between middle goalposts without been touched. 1 point for touched before going between goalposts or between outside poles called pointposts. You can't push opposition in back unless taking a mark(catch) you can ride there back or shoulders as long as you touch ball atleast. No offside, players can run and be anywhere anytime on field when playing a game.

All things considered (Time on) the games go for two hours of playing time, divided into 4 quarters. There are 18 on the field at any time for each team. 36 in total. You score 6 points and restart play in the centre by kicking it between the long middle posts, kicking it between the long and the short edge post gives you 1 point and gives the opposition team possession You don't HAVE to jump on their shoulders to mark it, however it is a good show to do it - It is called a "Speckie" a "Screamer" or a "Capper" named after Warwick Capper who was a guy well known for doing it, about 1000 years ago. When they catch it, or "mark" it, the man from the opposition team stands where it was marked, and you get to go back and take a kick without being tackled. Incidentally, a few AFL players have actually been recruited as punters because of how far they can kick. Ben Graham. The brothers Sav and Anthony Rocca. I think there are a couple more.

Y’all need to watch “What is AFL” on KZbin. Fields are an oval shape approx 2.5-2.8 acres in area. Games are 4 quarters of 20mins + OT. There’s 18 players per team on the field at any one time and 4 on the bench. Object move ball towards your goal line whilst defending opposition from scoring. Ball can be moved 3 ways. Running with the ball, but it must be bounced every 10meters, handpassed the ball must be hit with a clenched fist from an open palm (the ball cannot be thrown) and it can be kicked. A kick must travel 15meters before a team mate or opponent can mark/catch the ball, this can stop play for a on the spot kick or you can play on. If a penalty is awarded, the ball is taken from a on the spot kick or hand balled, this is play on. Ball can travel in any direction. A Mark is when the ball is caught, to complete a mark, the umpire must deem the player had first contact with the ball and held controlled possession of the ball. A ball can be knocked free in the contest or with contact to the ground and still be awarded as a mark, if the umpire (referee) has made the call it was a mark. To score ball must be kicked (and not touched) through 2 large uprights this is 6 points. If the ball is touched by team mate or opponent and goes through large uprights, ball hits large uprights or goes between large and small outer posts it’s 1 point. If the ball hits the outer lower post or crosses the boundary line on the full it’s an opposition free kick, if the ball bounces into the smaller outer post or across the boundary line it is thrown into play by a boundary umpire to a contested position. A player may carry the ball and be out of bounds, but the ball must remain within the field of play. So a player can run along outside holding the ball inside, but the player must return to the field of play to bounce or dispose of the ball. Tackling is allowed from any direction, but must be between knees & shoulders. Head high contact or tripping is a penalty/free kick to opposing team. Enjoy the Footy boy’s & watch “AFL here comes the boom”.

@@SiRasputin mate, accept it for what is is.... A great spectator sport, best watched at the game (not on tv). The Aussie Rules football field is over 150 metres long and almost as wide. This means that spectators are on average, 100 metres away from the action. That is its greatest drawback as a spectator sport. It is therefore imperative that you are able to watch replays on the large screens around the arena. Both Soccer and Rugby are great on tv. Unless you can get good seats at a game, watch it on tv. I respect soccer immensely. I do however, like to watch high-scoring sports, like: Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union, Aussie Rules and Basketball. Baseball and soccer.... Not so much. Golf is best watched on tv. That way, the beer fridge is never too far away. If I watch golf at a golf course, I will be the bloke holding the club and hitting the ball. -22 Players on each side, so 44 per game. -18 players for each team on the field at one time, with a rotating interchange bench with 4 players on it at all times. -ball kicked through the middle posts = 6 Points. -ball kicked through the outer posts = 1 Point. -2 ways of disposing the ball, either handpassing it (which is punching the ball out of your hands to your team, or kicking the ball. -There is boundary line around the oval, if the ball bounces out, they throw the ball back in at which point the rucks contest to guide the ball down to their rovers. -If the ball gets kicked out of the boundary on the full, it's a free kick to the team who didn't kick it. "Catching" is referred to as a mark, or marking in AFL - Each time a player marks it, they have about 10 seconds to dispose of the ball uncontested, once that's up the ump will blow the whistle and it's play on, meaning they can be tackled. -There is a significant amount of different free kicks in footy, "Holding the ball" being the most prevalent, if a player has prior opportunity to dispose of the ball and get caught/tackled it's a turn over. -Incorrect disposal, Ie; Throwing the ball, will result in a free against. -High tackles are also illegal, so contact above the neck. ("Referees" or Umpires (What we call them) tend to miss an awful lot of frees, so it can be quite confusing understanding the rules when watching lol. -Pushing an opponent in the back is also illegal, so players need to be mindful when tackling not to fall on the player they are tackling. (this rule seems to go out the window when it comes to them taking "Screamers" or "Speccies" when they jump on other players backs/shoulders to take massive marks, Unless it's blatantly unrealistic attempt at taking a mark, an umpire won't ping them for a free against) -There is a tribunal system, so when you are seeing these guys knocking each other out, they often get reported and then the tribunal will determine whether they are suspended for matches or fined to be penalised. The severity of the suspension depends on whether their act was intentional and a medical report. That's an incredibly brief summary of our beloved Aussie Rules, so much more to it. They are trying to make it an international sport, so the more publicity guys like you do, will give it a better shot to be played around the world. I'm very biased as it's definitely my favourite sport. When it's offseason it's very depressing lol. AFL is played between March - September every year, 22 Rounds, + 3 Weeks of Finals and a Grand Final where the top two teams play it out for the premiership cup.

There are quite a few facets of the game, although it is relatively easy to learn. The primary objective is to score the most points, ideally through lots of goals. Goals are obtained by kicking the ball through the two tall posts. If it hits the big posts or goes through the smaller posts, it is considered a behind. Furthermore, if any player touches the ball after the kick before it passes through, it is also considered a behind. Goals are worth 6 points and behinds are worth 1. The game starts in the centre of the field, there are 22 players from each side, 18 from each team on the field. After each goal and beginning of each quarter, the game recommences at the centre of the ground. The umpires will bounce the ball into the air, where two players, called the rucks (they are typically quite tall, at least 6'6) attempt to hit it out and pass it to midfielders. Midfields play most of the field and typically rack up the most possessions. The other roles are defenders, who obviously defend, and forwards whose job it is to score the goals. Any player can score a goal on the field, it is just that the forwards are most likely given the usual spots on the field they play. Goals can be kicked after the time has run out if the player has marked the ball and is within range to kick the ball fully over without it touching the ground (55-60 yards is normally the maximum but some players can kick 70-80). The ball can be passed around two ways (these are called disposals FYI). The first way is through kicking the ball. The second is a hand pass (this entails making a fist with hand and punching the ball out the other). If someone kicks to the ball to the other player and they mark it (the kick has to be at least 16 yards to count) the person can stop the play briefly (if they take too long it is play on) without worrying about being tackled. Any ball received off the ground, from too short of a kick or a hand pass can be tackled by the opposition. Tackles are illegal if they are taken too high (above the shoulder) or below the knees. Tackles are also illegal if the player doesn't have the ball. These are penalised as free kicks, which operate the same as the mark. A player gets the opportunity to kick the ball without being tackled. If during that time a player becomes too close, a 50m penalty (55 yards) is given, allowing the ball to be brought closer to goals. 50m penalties are also applied when unnecessary contact is made to a player after a mark, they refuse to give the ball back to the opposition quick enough and general rough contact outside of play. If a player gets the ball and has the opportunity to pass it but doesn't before being tackled, it is called holding the ball and is also a free kick (if there was no time to dispose the ball, it is considering "no prior opportunity" and a ball is done, similar to the centre bounce with the rucks hitting the ball out). Another free kick can be penalised if the player incorrectly disposes the ball, ie dropping or throwing the ball. The seasons operates like this. There are currently 18 teams and 22 home and away games. There are no conferences or divisions, so each team plays each other once, with a couple of teams playing each other twice. The AFL determines this through teams who played well the previous season before playing other tougher teams twice and the inverse for the teams who played worse. Also the teams with rivalries typically play twice to encourage more marquee games. Teams are ranked on the ladder as following. If a team wins, they get 4 points, a tie gives them 2 and a draw gets 0. Draws are very rare and there is no overtime if this happens. At the end of the season, teams that have accumulated an equal amount of points are then ranked based on percentage. The formula is points scored / points scored against them for the season. So a team that scored 900 points and had 900 against them would have 100%. This means winning is not the only important factor but also how much you win by. The 8 highest ranked teams on the ladder make it into the finals. 1st plays 4th & 2 plays 3rd (qualifying finals) and 5th plays 8th and 6th plays 7th (elimination finals). The top four teams play for a bye week the next round, with the losers playing the winners of the other two games in semi finals. The winners of the semi finals and the two winners of the previous qualifying finals play and those two teams make it to the grand final. The winners receive the premiership cup and the best on ground receives the Norm Smith Medal. Other accolades include club best & fairest (best player from each AFL team), coaches players of the year and the Brownlow (the best player of the season as voted by the umpires, they cannot have been suspended any games to get this award). Here are some notable players you should check out: Gary Ablett Snr and Jnr, Lance "Buddy" Franklin (he was in the video a few times), Leigh Matthews, Wayne Carey, Tony Lockett, Chris Judd, Adam Goodes, Dustin Martin, James Hird and the 7ft American Mason Cox. I hope this was informative and you enjoy the sport more. I probably prefer American Football (I support the evil empire Pats and all Boston teams in American sports) but love both. If you are picking a team, I suggest the North Melbourne Kangaroos (totally no bias). They are the kangas after all, what is more Australian than that.

As a Australian football player i will explain. You have to catch the ball and kick it in to the goal or you kick it to your teammate. If you catch it when it did not touch the ground it's a mark. A mark is a free kick. As for the goal the posts are the goals the sides are 1 point the middle is 6 points.

Actor Dean Cain (Superman from 'Lois and Clark'),who is a huge AFL, and I think Essendon, fan has talked up the AFL in Hollywood for 25 years or more. Interesting fact: the first international Australian Rules Football game ever played was between the USA's and Canada's women's teams! You young bucks need to realise that Aussie Rules was far more brutal during the late '70s and '80s - well before they began to clean up the game. Recommended video: Top 10 AFL Villians. This will further alter your perceived notions. To add to this, you should also check out Dustin "Dusty" Martin: Midfielder and Forward for the Richmond Tigers. He is quite simply outstanding. The best thing to have happened to the Tigers for a long time. He took the Tigers to three AFL Premierships in 2017, 2019 and 2020 - and, to think, it took the Tigers thirty-seven years to win another Premiership (since 1980).

AFL is unique to Australia, where we Rugby is played all over the world. AFL requires a lot more speed, agility and endurance too. The aim is to kick a goal, which scores 6 points if you get it between the 2 big posts. If you kick it between the big post and the small post, you get a “behind” or 1 point. You also have to bounce the ball every 15 steps you are holding it when running or what not, other wise it’s “holding the ball” and the opposition gets rewarded a free kick. No throwing either, the ball has to be hand balled or kicked. Games can score as high as 150 points. Great game 🇦🇺

(adding time on is approx. 30 mins/qtr.). It is virtually non stop and players are far fitter than any other code, in that they run 8/9 miles per game and play without pads. It is also older than any other code, started and the rules codified in 1858, and the first league was formed in 1877. Basically, Australia has 4 popular forms of football - Soccer, Rugby Union, Rugby League, and Australian Football (AFL). AFL is a sport unique to rugby that kinda uses some rules from Rugby, Soccer, and Gaelic Football, plus a few of its own. It's extremely popular here in Australia, probably the most popular sport just above Cricket and Rugby. I'd recommend watching a video on the basic AFL rules so you can appreciate how unique it is from other forms of football. Rugby is also very popular here, and both forms of Rugby (Union and League) are played widely. But they are both very different from AFL. Soccer is also played a lot here, especially at a Junior level.

Hey I’ll help you out if u guys see this, basically the aim of the game is to kick the ball through the middle 2 goal posts and that’s 6 points and called a ‘goal’ and if u either kick it into one of those post or between the outer posts that is 1 point and is considered a ‘behind’. There is 18 players on the field and 4 on the bench each team. There is 2 ways to pass the ball down the field, either hand balling which is like punching the ball from your fist out to another player or kicking it and if it goes further than about 20 yards then it is considered a mark and they get to walk back a bit and take an uncontested kick. You can also run the ball down the field but you have to bounce the ball every 16 yards or so. If the opposition has the ball you can go and tackle them but only between the shoulders and knees. If too high or low the ball goes to the other team. There positions just like in any other, forwards playing their half, midfielders in theirs and back an defend the opponents goals. Shout me out yeah.. hope this helps a bit

AFL and NRL are different games. AFL is played on a bigger field and with a smaller ball, yo also have to bounce the ball every 15 metres. NRL is play on a field that is 120 metres long. To score in afl you have to kick the ball in between the two taller post to get 6 points or hit the big post or get it in between one of the smaller posts and a bigger post to get one point. To score in nrl you have to run in two the end zone which is ten metres wide and put the ball down for four points and then you take a kick which is called a conversion for another two points. AFL is played with 22 people, only 18 people are on the field at a time and the other four are on the bench. NRL is played with 17 people, only 13 are on the field at a time and four people on the bench. There ya go boys I got you.

Love watching this. 6 points through the middle sticks must be kicked, 1 point for the outside post, kicked or pushed through. Mark/catch the ball, it's your ball to move on in the your direction. There is alot more rules, hand ball with your fist to pass, or kick to pass. Bestest game. Go the Geelong Cats.

One position in Australian football is called "Ruckman". Basically, he's the guy who takes part in the "bounce" (the equivalent of a basketball jump ball), but after the ball is in play, he becomes just another player. However, ruckmen tend to be much taller than their teammates, and their average height is only slightly lower than that of basketball players. Nic Naitanui, the guy with the dreadlocks who caught two "marks" in your video, is the ruckman for the West Coast Eagles, who are playing in Perth. Naitanui is a native of Fiji and is one of very few non-Australian players in the league.

There are also 32 players on the field at one time they are usually divided into four sections aswell forwards, defence, midfield and wings each team has 16 players on field and up to about 8 on the bench 3 of which are emergencies in case players get injured

Aussie Rules has 18 players per team plus interchange, a game lasts around 90 minutes in 4 quarters, and the field is about 125 yards from end to end Points are scored with goals and behinds, a goal is worth 6 points and the ball is kicked between the middle uprights, and a behind is between the outer posts and worth 1 point.

I don’t know what you are on about with regard to the MCG and VFL park ( I presume you mean Waverley ) it seems you are implying that VFL park is smaller than the MCG, well you are wrong again, VFL park was the longest and overall biggest ground in the competition. You were completely wrong in your comment but it seems you are having trouble accepting it. If your math is that wrong on the fly, as you say, then don’t bother! Also, the games last more like 110-120 minutes, remember the clock stops for every stoppage in play. It is so annoying that someone who is obviously clueless jumps in to explain the game to an American. Do you even follow the game at all? You should just butt out of the boy talk and watch the AFLW, or the A Fumble LW as it should be known. Hmmm, I’m not sure now, you are one weird individual. NFL coaches are relatively new to the idea that athletes that aren't from there can be far superior in aspects of their game...every NFL team should have an Aussie Rules punter...no brainer...they have the length and hang time and can kick shapes punt receivers have never even seen before...as a bonus, they will punish any returner who makes it through and is anywhere near them on the last line...tackling and kicking are their bread and butter...

@@markwestaway7207 if you think that Australian Rules Football is toughest sport because of Dermott Brereton got his ribs broken THEN think again for our Rugby League Football Code is lot more tougher than the Australian Rules Football Code simply because, The 1970 Grand Final In the 1970 grand finale, Sattler played with a broken jaw to help Souths to victory over Manly Warringah. In the premiership decider of 1970 South Sydney Rabbitohs were up against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at the Sydney Cricket Ground on the (19th) September. Having lost the previous Grand Final to the Balmain Tigers, Souths were desperate to win. Approximately ten minutes into the game Sattler collapsed after being hit with a forearm by Manly forward John Bucknall while not in possession of the ball. He suffered a double fracture to his jaw but pleaded to teammate Mike Cleary, "Hold me up so they don't know I'm hurt". He was helped up and continued to play in the game. At half time Souths were leading 12-6 when his teammates learnt about his injury. During the interval he refused treatment and insisted he continue playing. He also told the side, "The next bloke who tries to cut me out of the play is in trouble," to prevent his teammates trying to protect him from further injury. At the end of the game South Sydney had scored 3 tries to nil in a 23-12 victory. He later went to hospital to receive treatment but only after receiving the Giltinan Shield and making an acceptance speech. John Bucknall did not finish the game. When it comes to toughness is that Dermott Brereton is absolutely (NOTHING) comparing to Johnny (John) Saddler at all who was playing with a broken jaw of course.

Bonus points for the leg-lock on the head. Wrestling moves don't earn points but are fun. Scoring needs someone to kick the ball through the two centre posts. A goal is 6 points. If it goes between the goal and outer post it's a "behind" for one point.

Here's a little bit of trivia boys....In 1858 in Melbourne, Victoria, members of the Melbourne Cricket Club formed a loosely organised football team, and played against other local football enthusiasts over the winter and spring of that year. The Melbourne Football Club was officially founded the following year on 14 May, and three days later (17 May), four members codified the first laws of Australian rules football. The Geelong Football Club was formed shortly afterwards, and over the next decade, many more Australian rules football clubs were formed in Victoria. Melbourne and Geelong were founding members of the Australian Football League (AFL), making them the world's oldest football clubs that are now professional. In South Australia, the first team to be founded was the Port Adelaide Football Club, in 1870. You boys need to get out more.....

Aussie Rules Football Aussie Rules has been around since 1841 in some form or another. Its game that is pretty much exclusively played in Australia and the only professional league of its kind, the Australian Football League (AFL) is also situated there. Many players affectionate with the sport may call it a mix of footy, football, Aussie rules and Australian rules. Object of the Game The object of the game is to kick the football between a series of 4 goal posts. Depending on which posts the ball goes between will depend on how many points you score. The ball can be passed around between team mates in a series of fashions and the winning team will be the team with the highest number of points at the end of the game. Players & Equipment Aussie rules pitches are usually played on oval sized pitches with dimensions ranging from 135 to 185 metres in length, and 110 to 155 metres in width. Many Aussie Rules pitches mix with cricket fields as they or of a similar size and proportion. The pitches are marked around the outside to highlight the out of bounds area. At either end of the pitch 4 tall posts will be apparent. These are the scoring zones and are roughly 6 metres in height. The two front posts are 6.4 metres apart and represent the main scoring area (goal). The two post behind are also 6.4 metres apart and represent the secondary scoring area (point). The ball is made from leather and forms an oval shape (similar to a rugby ball). Other markings on the pitch include a goal square that is 9 metres wide and spanning with width of the goals posts, centre square and centre circle. Each team will consist of 18 players of which are all assigned to different positions. These players are allowed to move freely on the pitch. Each team may also have up to three substitutes which are ‘rolling’ meaning they can come on and off as many times as they want. Once a starting player gets substituted these players then become rolling. The positions are broken down into Full Forward, Half Forward, Centre Line, Half Back and Full Back. There are 7 umpires for Aussie Rules in total. The three main umpires are known as filed umpires and they basically oversee all the decisions on filed such as time keeping, infringements and enforcing the rules. The two line judges are there to see if the ball goes out of play or not - these judges can also intervene where on filed umpires have missed a decision. The last two umpires are goal umpires and its their job to signal if a goal has been scored successfully or not. Scoring If the ball is kicked between the two goal posts (middle posts) then 6 points are awarded. If the ball goes between a goal post and one of the behind posts (point) then 1 point is awarded. 1 point is also awarded if the ball is carried or forced over the scoring line by the attacking team. Winning the Game The team with the highest amount of points at the end of the game are deemed the winners. Rules of Aussie Rules Football Umpires signal for all decisions and their call is final By kicking the ball between the goal posts without it being touched by any other player, then 6 points are awarded. If the ball is kicked without being touched between the behind posts (point) then 1 point is scored. A game consist of four 20 minute quarters. The game starts with ruck. This is where the umpire throws the ball into the air and one player from each team will try and tap the ball to their team. After a goal has been scored the game will be restarted with the same way as at the beginning of the game. The only way you can pass the ball is to hand ball. For this to happen the ball must be placed in the palm of the hand and then the ball struck with the butt of the other hand clenched into a fist. You cannot throw or slap the ball to perform a successful pass. A player can ‘mark’ the ball when they receive it. This can happen one of three ways; the player catches the ball without the ball bouncing, the player catches the ball after it has travelled over 10 metres or the player catches the ball before it’s been touched in the air. Once marked the player cannot then be tackled. If a tackle occurs or an opponent steps over the mark then a foul will be called and the team with the ball will advance 15 metres down the field. Players can tackle opponents to try and win back the ball. A player can only be tackled from shoulder height downwards. If a player is tackled and refuses to let go of the ball then holding the ball will be called by the umpire and possession will be turned over. Players are permitted to block their opposition by shepherding players away from the ball. This can only be done within 5 metres of the ball. Players are omitted from pushing their opponents in the back either whilst they are running or whilst in a tackle.

so pretty much its 18 players a side and both teams are trying to kick the ball through the posts and is constant running and kicking and catching. the two middle posts if you kick the ball through is 6 points, and either side of these two posts are two extra goals and if it goes through there its 1 point. players can kick it to one another and if its caught on the full (no bounce) they get 10 seconds to kick wherever they want without any player coming to tackle them. Its just about trying to kick the ball between the posts on each side of the field. Its a very fast paced game.

The ball has to be kicked through the centre posts to receive a goal (6 points) and through the side posts to receive 1 point. An AFL match will run for just under 3 hours from start to finish. A game comprises four quarters, which are made up of 20 minutes of actual game time. However, 'time-on' is added for any stoppages, such as injuries or throw-ins.
