American bombers, such as Boeing XBLR-1 or XB-15, the XB-17 or B-17 Flying Fortress, the Douglas XB-19 or XBLR-2 or B-19, the Northrop XB-35, the Convair or Consolidated XB-36 or B-36 peacemaker, the Boeing B-47 Stratojet, the Convair B-60 or YB-60 and the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress.
We will take a look at some of the most iconic and powerful aircraft that helped shape the history of aerial warfare.
First up, we have the Boeing XBLR-1 and the XB-15. These were two experimental heavy bombers that were developed in the 1930s, prior to the outbreak of World War II. The XBLR-1 was built to test the concept of a long-range bomber, while the XB-15 was designed to be the largest and most powerful bomber of its time. Although neither of these bombers were put into production, they laid the groundwork for the development of the B-17 Flying Fortress, which would become one of the most famous bombers of World War II.
Speaking of the B-17, it was a four-engine heavy bomber that was primarily used by the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The B-17 was developed in the 1930s and became known for its toughness and ability to withstand enemy fire. Its high-altitude performance made it ideal for bombing missions over Germany, and it was responsible for dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft during the war.
Moving on to the Douglas XB-19, XBLR-2, and B-19, these were three experimental heavy bombers that were developed in the 1940s. The XB-19 was designed to be the largest bomber in the world at the time, while the XBLR-2 was built to test long-range capabilities. The B-19 was a refined version of the XB-19 and was intended to serve as a long-range bomber. However, it was never put into full production due to the end of World War II.
Next up is the Northrop XB-35, which was an experimental heavy bomber developed in the 1940s. The XB-35 was unique in that it was a flying wing aircraft, meaning that it had no traditional tail section. It was designed to have long range and high altitude capabilities, but unfortunately, it was not put into full production due to its high cost and technical difficulties.
Moving on to the Convair or Consolidated XB-36, which was also known as the B-36 Peacemaker. It was a strategic bomber that was developed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. The B-36 was the largest bomber ever to enter production and was capable of carrying nuclear weapons. It was designed to be a deterrent against the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War and played a significant role in the development of the United States' strategic bombing capabilities.
The Boeing B-47 Stratojet was a strategic bomber that was developed in the 1950s. It was designed to be a high-speed, high-altitude bomber that could deliver nuclear weapons to targets deep inside the Soviet Union. The B-47 was the first mass-produced jet-powered bomber and played a significant role in the United States' Cold War strategy.
The Convair B-60 or YB-60 was an experimental jet-powered bomber that was developed in the 1950s. It was designed to be a successor to the B-52 Stratofortress and was intended to be faster and more capable than its predecessor. However, the project was cancelled due to cost overruns and technical difficulties, and the B-52 remained in service for many years.
Finally, we have the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, which is perhaps the most iconic American bomber of all time.
The Convair B-36 "Peacemaker" is a strategic bomber that was built by Convair and operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) from 1949 to 1959.

Born in 1950, I lived that era - growing up in a traditional "America the Beautiful", we (kids) had these model airplanes, pictures, games all over the place - our country was, in our eyes, invincible - God was on our side after all. It was an exciting time to grow up, regardless of how naive and "innocent" we were... before Vietnam. Thank you DroneScapes for bringing us back the memories, Ciao, L (Veteran)

Now, retired, I was yet thrilled to get up close and listen to, feel, and smell an original Nieport 28 fighter at my local airport, spewing castor oil & smoke as it rushes away from me down the runway.

Moved to Travis AFB mid 50s; the first thing you felt & heard was the B-36, whether is was taxi'ing (BRAKES); powering up for take-off, and the ground shaking when it started to roll. Then the B-52 came in, low fly-overs of our houses during Cuba. The airshows every years were great. I loved the F-104 (Starfighter), they actually covered the wings so people would not get CUT, just a seat with a rocket on the back.

I met a retired Colonel at Chanute AFB while training as a Firefighter, who flew the B-58 Hustler. He and his wife were walking their dog and saw me admiring the plane on display, one of many planes displayed on base. Besides the A-10 Warthog, (Of which I saw the first iteration in 1976 at Malmstrom AFB, so new the maintainence crew covered the cockpit to keep the Soviets from seeing it from space) the B-58 is my favorite aircraft. It's as mean looking on the ground as it is in the air!

In San Antonio, Kelly AFB was the overhaul facility for the B36. They completely rebuilt the P&W4360s and I remember in the early morning, as they warmed these monsters up, the noise created a sound wave which could be felt 10 miles away. It was a peculiar sound produced by no other craft. Underneath one of these giants as they lifted off was an experience. San Antonio produced air shows like no other place with Kelly, Lackland, Brooks, and Randolph AFB. Magical time to be a kid.

This was great fun seeing all the often astonishing prototypes. There's some excellent historical footage. The sight of the XB-19 bouncing along the runway was dizzying to watch- I can only imagine what it must've been like from the inside of that immense bird. The early prototypes of the XB-36 without the bubble canopy, kind of like a stretched B-29, are gorgeous. It's truly amazing how rapidly aeronautical design advanced in just a few decades.

I feel ashamed that I have made it through nearly half a century of life without knowing much of anything ... and specifically without knowing anything about this entire topic... I've been seriously interested in WWII for maybe 30 years...I still barely know about....literally billions of details. And to think that the knowledge it takes to develop and build any single piece of any vehicle, weapon...whatever... has to be taught and learned and grown in the minds of countless brand new humans....over and over.... I can't even successfully articulate this simple comment about this incredible little summary of this one interesting thing.... It is extremely humbling to consider all that our little species has managed to do. It gets more and more sobering and impressive the more I learn.... ... So...yeah this is a neat video, thanks for posting... I need some Excedrin Migraine and a nap.

Very nice video presentation about some iconic airplanes. The XB-36 "Peacemaker" was a beast. It was an amazingly powered airplane. (six pusher prop engines, and four jet engines near the end of the wings) It had a total of 10 engines. The marvelous technology of this airplane came to be, and it was mass-produced because the Air Force, under then Brigadier General Curtis LeMay, it proved to be the ultimate long-range bomber. Convair has planned out another design much later dubbed the XB-60, that was an all-jet powered concept. It basically was a "Peacemaker" built to become a "swept-wing" large bomber, and transport airplane. This airplane, the XB-60 however, though rather impressive, didn't sit well with General LeMay and the Air Force for the military long-range bombing offensive. The Boeing company had developed the smaller B-52 "Stratofortress", and it was chosen by the Air Force, and was brought into in large numbers. It was in reality, that little did anyone know at the time, that the B-52 was to become a technological marvel after so many years. To this day, the B-52 has become the oldest "still-flying" airplane ever produced. They will have newer engines fitted onto them soon.

Yes, the North American AJ-1 Savage, the U.S.Navy interim nuclear strike aircraft, 2xR-2800 + J-33. Essentially a jet boosted piston aircraft. Took up a great deal of carrier deck space, perhaps a somewhat marginal vehicle (very small prop clearance on trapping), soon replaced by Douglas A3D-1. Other planes such as Lockheed P2V, Fairchild C-119, Fairchild C-123 had booster jets added later in their careers, usually to aid high gross weight takeoffs.

All because the Burnelli B-1000 & 2000 were politically unfavorable, because FDR favored graft over function. Boeing had a 1940s proposal called the model 360, and related 361 & 362: a huge, thick wide chord wing with buried engines usually with pusher props. Looking like the '40s Higgins Bellamce 39-60 logistics plane which can be found mentioned online. They concentrated on minimizing the fuselage and maximizing the wing to carry the load instead. See also the USAAF Materiel Command Design MCD-329 (MX-423) of the same sort: normal cruciform shape, with minimized fuselage and huge thick wings to carry almost all fuel & payload. Sort of a little test plane like the huge Higgins Bellanca logistics, which proved the concept of minimizing the fuselage to just what needed to carry a tail, see Northrop 1929 "Avion 1" x-216h.(not the later N-1M all-wing) Commonly called a "flying wing, it was entirely successful as a flying machine, though he ran out of money and dropped it. It was reported by test pilots as among the best of all planes in its weight/power class in all criteria, and a good deal faster (more efficient) than any. He should have kept on with it, instead of chasing off after the purists' all-wing with no tail.

The XB15 and XB19 were both victims of airframes larger than the engines could lift.
@gregoryfuller1136

How did they fly then? As well, the engines do not lift the aircraft. The wings do that after sufficient air is drawn over them.

I will never understand why you would put a real nuclear bomb in a plane for a test run when you can just put a fake bomb, the same shape, same weight into the plane and do the same test run!

Anyone know (not speculate or guess, or hypothesize, KNOW) why Consolidated liked the single wheel main landing gear design so much? Seems like such a bad idea for so many reasons.

At 18:33. Is that a B 29 parked next to a B 36. ?? Wow, that really puts into perspective how big the 6 turning 4 burning is!!!! (Yes, I know, that one was a early version without the jets, settle down, KZbin warriors)!!!

@PaYankee99

No. The closest one came to flying again was a restoration in the mid 70s where they ran each engine 1 at a time. Probably would have flown but the Air Force shut it down.

I know I'm not going to be the only Vet watching this that can't relate to the crewman at 34:07. Not only do you learn to sleep absolutely anywhere at any time but also to eat anywhere and anytime. Notice the fork tucked into a pocket on his flight jacket.

Turboprops came along in the late 40s, just a little too late to be included in the design. There was a turboprop version designed for the civilian passenger version of the XC99 if any airline wanted to take it up.
