Where did beyblades come from? See traditional Japanese ancient beyblades. Would you walk up to strangers and speak to them in a foreign language? I was a bit scared to talk to people in Japanese when I first started learning in 2015, but slowly I got over that fear. Right after moving to Japan years ago, I felt self-conscious too. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. All you need is a little bit of simple Japanese to make some friends and memories. See this American girl speak Japanese to strangers and find out that happens.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

This video was done with my childhood friend who grew up with me in Michigan, Kelly Morita. Today’s goal was to show that there is no need to feel self-conscious about speaking in a foreign language to strangers. People are nice and if you make mistakes you only become better. A little Japanese goes a long way. For the next video, I will finally level up and introduce advanced Japanese with another KZbin friend. -Anming

I have been to Japan and it is such a wonderful, inspiring and organized country. The people are also polite and disciplined. My only wish is for it to open up a little more and export its values and soft power abroad. The world can learn a lot from therm. The Olympics was a great opportunity for that and I hope more is done in the future.

@@OrientalPearl You saying you learned Japanese in bars reminded me of a funny author bio in a comedy book about Japan. He said he mistakenly bought an airplane ticket to Japan and ended up stuck there until he had learned enough Japanese to ask for a ticket home. He learned by talking to hostesses in bars, but did not realise that men and women speak differently and he spoke like a women. So he switched to learning from sarariman in the bars, and now when he speaks Japanese he sounds permanently drunk.

@@SarthorS This is a common problem for all language learners when they learn from their foreign spouse. It's usually just cute. Some languages (especially middle eastern ones like Assyrian and Arabic) have more genderized language and its easy to mislearn parts of the language and it's a bigger problem. Japanese has more genderized differences than English but it's pretty minor compared to say Arabic.

I want to mention that when Japanese ask「何で日本に来たの?」”Why did you come to Japan?” , they want to say “What brought you to Japan?”. It may sound offensive if you directly translated into English but they’re not trying to be rude.

When I was learning English I used to misunderstand sentences as I would understand they there rude, then I learned that English have a very simple daily’s vocabulary. Japanese language is super simple too! More than English!!!!! It drives me crazy sometimes! Japanese words are simplistic enough to drive us misunderstanding what they mean. So in order to live well with Japanese society 😂 I always have in mind that they are always polite, so I try to answer than politely no matter how I understand it. Although in the US they use a lot of sarcasm, and I love it ughhh! Lol 😂 but living in Japan I found it super rude to be sarcastic in some situations I don’t agree and they sense it almost all the times 🤭 it is stronger than me. So I use it in positive ways.

That was wholesome. Such nice people. My dad went to Japan once (I think it was Kyoto) and he said that the Japanese were one of the nicest people he met. They tried their best to assist him even though there's a language barrier. But Tokyo though, not really he said, maybe because people were busy since it was the main city. So it's quite understandable.

Japanese people are much more friendly with foreigners, but they kind of “underestimate” them in a lot of ways. e.g. If you’re working there as a foreigner they won’t turn to you for help.

I like the fact that she's fluent, yet there's no way I'd confuse her with a native Japanese person even if I didn't know what she looked like. She speaks fluently, but you can tell she's a foreigner speaking Japanese. I like that a lot and that's what I want to strive for in my Japanese learning. "Sound just like a native!" Why? No matter how much I sound Japanese, one look at me will show that I'm not. I understand you want to sound as close as possible so you can be understood, but I don't understand the emphasis on it.

Great advice! I need to approach people more, most of my Japanese friends initiated conversation with me... at izakayas 🍻. Starting with basic phrases/pronunciation then moving to particle usage/sentence structure worked well for me (for three years I could only read Roumaji, but illiteracy caught up to me after moving to Japan... "Osusume onegaishimasu" every time I couldn't read a menu got old fast)

@Tommo Ash - the best way to begin talking to strangers is just simply ask for the time or directions. Sometimes, simple questions lead to longer conversations. Asking for the time, helps you get used to approaching strangers. Once you're comfortable with asking for the time, then try to start a conversation about something you've noticed from the person telling you the time. Maybe, ask where they got the nice watch or ask them how they like their smartphone.

I would not understand why they would scold the Japanese woman. As the others said, I think なんで日本に来ましたか is a very normal question for foreigners to be asked. What I was surprised however was that the KZbinr mentioned several times directly that she studied at WASEDA (oh and by the way, I studied at, you know, Waseda) which not only in Japan is so much showing off... Apart from the fact that entering via a foreign uni is not hard, it surprises me that despite living in Japan she has such very direct way of speaking...

So most of the times, they (mostly locals) would approach me first, and I'm glad with it bcs I know that they would spare some time to talk to me and I can keep the conversation go. Anyway, thankyou for making this video! I learnt more ways to approach a stranger haha. Hope to see more of this kind of video from you!

When I went to japan for the first time in 2017 I knew zero Japanese. Maybe a year ago I started studying and I'd say I'm around N4 because I didn't study that often because of school though. But right now my listening and speaking are worse than my reading/writing, so I got to work on that to talk with people on the street because I haven't really gotten the opportunity to do that yet and practice my speaking/listening comp. In your videos it looks like pretty basic Japanese that you and the Japanese people are speaking, I could definitely make out a lot of it, and I understand now you don't need crazy grammar mastery to have fun and make new friends. I realize through your videos that learning a language unlocks so many new experiences and opportunities in the country you're visiting, and that's why language learning is so interesting to me. Because when you learn the language, you also learn part of the culture and the people as well. I want to go back to japan someday and try to do half of what you do without stuttering and making mistakes like crazy lol and I know if I study enough and practice I can. But thanks for making these amazing videos, it gives me and others confidence for the future, and a look at the kindness of the Japanese. :)
