This video was done with my childhood friend who grew up with me in Michigan, Kelly Morita. Today’s goal was to show that there is no need to feel self-conscious about speaking in a foreign language to strangers. People are nice and if you make mistakes you only become better. A little Japanese goes a long way. For the next video, I will finally level up and introduce advanced Japanese with another KZbin friend. -Anming

I have been to Japan and it is such a wonderful, inspiring and organized country. The people are also polite and disciplined. My only wish is for it to open up a little more and export its values and soft power abroad. The world can learn a lot from therm. The Olympics was a great opportunity for that and I hope more is done in the future.

@@OrientalPearl You saying you learned Japanese in bars reminded me of a funny author bio in a comedy book about Japan. He said he mistakenly bought an airplane ticket to Japan and ended up stuck there until he had learned enough Japanese to ask for a ticket home. He learned by talking to hostesses in bars, but did not realise that men and women speak differently and he spoke like a women. So he switched to learning from sarariman in the bars, and now when he speaks Japanese he sounds permanently drunk.
@RadioactivePretzels4 жыл бұрын
@@SarthorS This is a common problem for all language learners when they learn from their foreign spouse. It's usually just cute. Some languages (especially middle eastern ones like Assyrian and Arabic) have more genderized language and its easy to mislearn parts of the language and it's a bigger problem. Japanese has more genderized differences than English but it's pretty minor compared to say Arabic.

So in order to live well with Japanese society 😂 I always have in mind that they are always polite, so I try to answer than politely no matter how I understand it. Although in the US they use a lot of sarcasm, and I love it ughhh! Asking for the time, helps you get used to approaching strangers. Where does the string attach to the stone? Does it have grooves for the string?

Its a top, not a stone

Great advice! I need to approach people more, most of my Japanese friends initiated conversation with me... at izakayas 🍻. Starting with basic phrases/pronunciation then moving to particle usage/sentence structure worked well for me (for three years I could only read Roumaji, but illiteracy caught up to me after moving to Japan... "Osusume onegaishimasu" every time I couldn't read a menu got old fast)

Beyond your language ability the reason you connect so well is you are nice and natural.

The gentleman with the black mask playing with the spinning stones could not help himself he was obviously feeling your warmth and light and felt the need to show some hospitality be it in a childish yet loving fashion , I felt that was actually very sweet, he had kept silent for quite some time and then spun you a stone and placed it in your hand.

Wow that KZbinr dude was really friendly, your conversation put a smile on my face hahaha anyways, your videos are awesome and an insiparation for myself. This year I plan to take the JLPT N3 (passed N5 in 2017 and N4 in 2018), but in my country the virus situation is critical so I hope that the exam won't be postoponed to next year. In any case, thank you for the wonderful video!

@@arigabou I started on mid 2016 but it was by myself and I was busy with some exame, so I really started to seriously study on 2017. I tried to take the jlpt on every year since then, passed N5 and N4 but failed N3 last year. If the circunstances improve, this year I will pass N3 for sure since I got more time to study.

This is so cool! Last semester I took a Japanese class at uni for beginners and I although I can grasp languages and their structure quite easily, I always thought that what I learned in this class wasn't a lot. But I understood so much of what you said in this video, holy moly! Really proud of myself now

I'm so glad to hear that. i try to keep the content simple 1) because subtitles are time consuming 2) I want viewers to understand some of the conversation.

Good for you! Very cool and much appreciated. I was stationed there in the '80s.... married my wife from there 30 years ago... but I did not learn Japanese at all... maybe 5% of the skill that you have... maybe. Thank you for making such a good impression and representing us 'gaijin' so well.

I got nervous for you when the girl asked you why you came to Japan. They didn't seem like they were going to be very friendly at first so I thought they were about to gang up on the "American girl" but that went very well! I'm always amazed at your ability to just walk up and chit chat with people! Not everyone has that built in them

The guy next to her scolded her a little for asking so directly. But she spent a lot of time in New Zealand, so she is more westernized.

In my experience it is a very common question for japanese to ask foreigners. everytime i meet someone new in japan i am asked this question.
@youtuveunvideo4 жыл бұрын
I would not understand why they would scold the Japanese woman. As the others said, I think なんで日本に来ましたか is a very normal question for foreigners to be asked. What I was surprised however was that the KZbinr mentioned several times directly that she studied at WASEDA (oh and by the way, I studied at, you know, Waseda) which not only in Japan is so much showing off... Apart from the fact that entering via a foreign uni is not hard, it surprises me that despite living in Japan she has such very direct way of speaking...
