the brits dont tend to drink cold tea because of the weather, our weather is generally colder and theres nothing more comforting to have a hot drink on a cold day, it warms the bones.. (in addition we drink it when the weather is hot to equalise the internal temps so it feels colder.

Not everyone realises tea has caffeine in it, which gives a uplift of mood (aside for being able to hug a cup of tea as a solace). Of course, nowadays, we have decaffeinated tea (as with coffee), and it's all part of this present specious thinking you are going to live forever.

Hey JT - just a little bit of British ways of speaking for you.... in the south of England you might say "I'd like a cuppa" Cuppa being short for Cup of tea. In the north of England they say "I'm going to make a brew" It is the same thing. When people visit your home it is very polite to offer them tea as soon as they arrive.

Like America, Scotland’s “Public Schools” are the State schools. Privately funded schools are known as Independent Schools up here. Works out well for all the Scots who apply for top jobs in England where social status is determined by which type of school you went to!

Little known fact. The original UK schools were for the elite only, then "private" schools came about that were open to anyone who could pay, hence the term "public", like you might call a shop public, because it's open to the public, but it's still also private, and you have to pay for services!

It's not just that we _drink_ tea, we also know how to _make_ tea even if we do drink a lot of coffee too, which on the whole, Britons don't know how to make. Iced tea is comparatively rare here. Just be aware that when we say 'public school' in Britain we mean an expensive private school such as Eton, Harrow or Repton. Actual public schools are called state schools.

@Pedro Conejo, I hate to contradict you but I very rarely drink tea here in Lancashire and prefer coffee. I also have the added advantage of having lived in Canada and worked for 7-Eleven over there in both Edmonton and Calgary and make an excellent pot of coffee which I used to sell by the barrel full every day of my working life. The trick to making a decent pot of coffee is to add a tiny pinch of salt to the grains prior to percolating it to get rid of the bitterness. Having said that I prefer instant coffee rather than the percolated kind and I always make it in my microwave oven rather than boiling the water in a kettle. I put a heaped teaspoon of a decent brand of instant coffee granules - usually Nescafé, Red Mountain or Maxwell House into a mug, add sufficient sugar, then some milk and top it up with cold water, stick it in the microwave oven on full power for two and a half minutes and Robert's your mother's brother. It comes out really creamy after you've stirred it and is similar to cappuccino. If you want to go the whole hog and have a café au lait instead then just fill the whole cup with milk instead of the cold water after the coffee granules and sugar.

I love a cup of tea, many of my jobs when I was younger was making cups of tea for everyone. Generally here tea is made by putting a tea bag in a cup( though some like old way of using tea leaves) adding boiling hot water from kettle, couple or even 3 tsp sugar and milk, there is a big debate on whether milk should go in before hot water or after. I used to drink really weak tea now I drink black tea, which is tea no milk.

Many people have forgotten or don't know that in the UK people used to drink coffee before they started to drink tea. In the 17th and 18th century coffee houses were in fashion and people, mainly men, used to meet there for debates, to discuss different topics. The first two coffee houses opened in 1652 in Oxford and in London. Tea was introduced later but it was mainly the upper class who drank it because it was expensive. Now coffee is fashionable again, particularly in London.

I moved from S.E London where I'd grown up with tea and everyone I'd ever met drank tea, to Manchester where most people I've met drink coffee. There are still tea drinkers but I've mostly seen, lived with, worked for or served coffee drinkers. Just based on personal observation within my little world. Also saying brew instead of cuppa and dinner instead of lunch. Love regional differences. Also, scrolling through this is the nicest comment thread I've ever seen, everyone on here is so nice and good humoured. Really made me smile :)

I do hate it when people say "beyond the pale" to mean "To work extra hard" and things to that extent. It does not mean that. It means "outside the bounds of acceptable behaviour." Which means something very bad. So, when some one says "A headteacher at a school went beyond the pale" in this day and age. Probably would insinuate they slept with a student. It saddens me when a yotuuber, who is a fellow brit, incorrectly uses phrases.

Exactly. Have never heard anybody use it for the first suggested meaning though. Very odd. They seem to be confusing it with a saying such as 'above and beyond (the call of duty).'
