I so much appreciate that you show how Europe really is. The freedom of walking almost everywhere you want, no fear of trespassing problems. Landscapes, houses, nature, peace, society ... Those fountains with benches to sit down maybe have a talk - are not for private use (only) they are made for public. I like the way you greet everybody - I´m the same (btw from Germany near the Alps)

The Architecture... I always have the impression, that Austria and Southern Germany retained the style of ancient Roman Buildings, with clean lines, white Walls with decorative painting on them, and then wooden roofs and balconies. As more north you go in Germany (where the Romans did not rule), the more you see Fachwerk and Red Brick.

@@bankimmun8621 Both is true. "I" and "J" were pretty much interchangable in written German in the 18th century, when this was erected. I write that because there is no letter "J" in ancient Greek, only "I" (Iota). H can be read as the Greek uppercase Eta (vowel "E"), as well as the Latin H. So both of you are right. You can read the inscription as the first three letters of Jesus` name in Greek; or like bankimmun8621 wrote, if you prefer the Latin. Meaning Jesus mankind´s saviour.

IHS is Greek but latinized and those are the first 3 Letters of the name Jesus in Greek. In Greek Jesus is spelled ΙΗΣΟΥΣ and the 3rd Greek letter Σ which is called "Sigma" got replaced with a Latin "S" but those 3 letters also got so to say a "second meaning" and a "third meaning" (the catholics are obsessed with such "wordplay riddles" and also obsessed with the number 3) the second meaning is the latin phrase "in hoc signo" meaning "with this sign" refering to ancient Roman Emperor Constantin (who wasn´t Emperor at that time... yet.. but General) who let his soldiers write the 3 first letters of "Jesus´name" ΙΗΣ on their shields direct right before his battle against an other Roman General who also wanted to become Emperor because Constantin who was not Christian...yet.. had a "vision" the night before battle were Jesus appeared in his dream and said something along those lines : "With my name/In my name you will win that battle". And with the outcry "in hoc signo" meaning those 3 letters he let paint on the shields of his soldiers right now Constantin stormed into battle which he won. That win made Constantin become Emperor + a Christian and he was then the Emperor who established Christianity as the main religion in the whole ancient Roman Empire which was the start for christianity as a official religious institution because before it was just a small religious sect operating foremost just in the underground in secret. the third meaning is "Iesus hominum salvator" meaning "Jesus, human´s savior" which is self explaining I guess. And by the way Tyrol is actually nicknamed "The holy Land Tyrol/Das heilige Land Tirol" and I guess after strolling around a bit you can now imagine why. "Volksschule" = Primary school/elementary school = the first 4 grades of school for 6 to 10 years old kids. The name "Volksschule" means literally people´s school/folk´s school and that goes back to Empress Maria Theresia who ordered by decree in 1774 that all her subjects in her crownlands between 6 and 12 years old had to learn basic writing, reading and math so she founded the "Volksschule" which was absolutely revolutionary at that particular time because till to this point education was a priviledge solely for the rich who could affort a privat teacher or for those who went the clergy path by entering a monastary in order to become a clergy man... The greeting is "Grüß Dich" literally "Greet you" the short form of the phrases "Ich grüße Dich" (I´m greeting you" or for "Es grüße Dich Gott" (May God greet you) both are shortened "Grüß Dich" or in tyrolian dialect "Griasch Di" where the "G" (but also a "K") is a very hard snoring like sounding throat sound

Hey, that is no river, that is a creek. But when it rains heavily, such tiny creeks can get huge and very wild. Birgitz is a village, Axams is a small town. - Why do you not use your smart phone and Google maps with GPS? It would show you where you are and where you are hiking. You see those large green bushes/trees beside of the fences? To filter the dust and the noise away from that so noisy main street. A martyrer is sombody who has given his life for Christian values. Pfarrer = priest, pastor. Pfarrer Neururer had lost his life by the Nazis.

If you are looking for the center of a village and the oldest parts, look for the churches. Churches have been built since centuries in the center of a village. - Yes you may drink from fountains. - IHS = in Latin Iesus Hominum Salvator, "Jesus, Savior of Mankind". - In old days, large farm houses had wooden barns on the top above the stable. Today some people still .built like this, but it is no barn and stable next the rooms for the people anymore.. In catholic churches people see paintings and statues of the holy ones as well, not only of Jesus and Mary. - Churches and chapelles used to be open, but since foreign criminals are stealing and demolishing everywhere, the priest had to close the door or use an iron huge fence to prevent stepping deeper into the church, exept during holy mass.. Thus people had been walking a lot ibn past days, Christians built little chapells and wayside shrins in crossroads or important points, often benches and small fountains and wells had been beside for rest. The water is drinkable for public and clean. - Volksschule = school for kids age 6-10.

Native Tyrolean here. I am afraid this will be a bit on the longish side. Jump to the end for the solution if you like. As always with Austrian customs and language, it is a bit more complicated than that. Watchers of this video might have already noticed that Tyrol was decisively shaped by Catholic Christian believes. That is another story and much too complicated for a YT discussion, so I won't (and never will) delve into this here. Originally, the whole Tyrolean greeting is "Griaß di!" (please spell it this way). In High German it reads "Grüß' dich Gott!". "Griaß" is a form of the verb "grüßen'" (to greet) in dialect. The apostrophe at the end of "grüß' " indicates that an ending "e" is suppressed. This often happens for the sake of brevity, in exclamations, and especially in dialect, In High German it would read as "grüße". Note that this is Konjunktiv (in English called subjunctive). It is not imperative, otherwise the accusative "di" or "dich" would make no sense. This usage of Konjunktiv is called hortative (instigating). The subject "Gott", meaning God, is left out altogether. This is caused in equal parts by a desire for brevity, by deep respect, and in order to be in keeping with the second commandment. "Di" is the accusative in Tyrolean dialect of the "du" form of address, which is normally used for friends and close acquaintances only. However, in Tyrol, "du" may be used for informally addressing almost anyone, without being considered rude (I intentionally write may, not must, and informally!). This is also true for a few other Alpine regions besides Tyrol, but only there. Don´t use "du" in Vienna or Hamburg. Unless you are a friend of the addressed person, use "Sie". Else, eyebrows will go up at Mach speeds. You have been warned. But I digress. Thus, the greeting "Griaß Di!" on the whole translates as "May God greet you... " In thought, at least in the olden days, folks would have added "...should you pass away, and therefore see Him, before we two meet again." NB: Of course you can use "Grüß Gott!" without "dich", "Sie", etc., as a formal and polite address for any Austrian you consider an adult whom you do not know, meet the first time, etc.

I've lived in Innsbruck for 20 years and I've never had any stress or trouble. But if you go out to these villages outside of Innsbruck, you always end up in a fight. The people in the country are not peaceful, most of them are alcoholics and very aggressive. They're also racist. They laugh at you when you're a tourist because they see your money. If you live there, they would exclude you because you're a stranger and don't belong to them.
