True. My family had one and she was one of my favorite dogs I’ve had. She wasn’t super needy, calm and confident (which is a good thing, we had a poodle mix too at the same time and man was that poodle anxious and needy), just a great small dog. She was sweet too. Could be independent but still a dog who was happy to see you. Loved her. Most people have the puppy cut so their hair isn’t like that. And they’re actually very sturdy small dogs (believe it or not but their legs/body is stocky under all that fur). Our Pekingese always won when the two dogs we had were playing. She’d pin down the small male poodle mix we had every time, poor guy, lol. I’m thinking about getting a new dog and possibly another Pekingese (debating on a small dog or medium size dog). But yes, I now love the peke. And unfortunately poodles are just a no for me. My sister has one of the popular goldendoodle dogs and unfortunately that dog too is similar to the small poodle/Lhasa Apso mix we had. She’s anxious and has bad behaviors from nerves. Very very needy. So no, get yourself a dog that isn’t a spaz. Calm, confident dogs are the best.

Pekes aren't normal dogs. They love being pampered. If they don't like something you know all about it. They'll bite anyone if they're displeased. Stubborn little sods!
@narnia1233
@narnia1233 3 жыл бұрын
Most people do the puppy cut. These dogs are actually very sturdy. My peke was really fast and ran around just like any other dog. But they’re much more calm than other small dogs. I’m surprised that someone said their peke bites. We had a female peke and she never bit anyone her whole life, not even snapped. The only thing she ever did was growl at my little cousin who literally reached to grab her face. I prevented him from grabbing her face by putting my hand over her face and she didn’t bite or anything. My cousin left and then I lifted my hand and she immediately sauntered out of the room to go hide, lol. Sad to hear some other pekes weren’t as sweet. My dog was wonderful. Our poodle on the other hand was the extremely anxious ankle biter type.
@janeenharris3074
@janeenharris3074 3 жыл бұрын
@@narnia1233 My peke was sweet, but she didn't suffer anything she didn't like. She lived with 4 children, so she taught them to respect her space. She'd growl and if they ignored that she'd bite them. They loved her. We had her for 19 years. She's been gone for 4 years, and I still miss her.
@narnia1233
@narnia1233 3 жыл бұрын
@@janeenharris3074 Oh good to hear. I was gonna say that would be a shame if your peke bit without warning. Yeah, my peke was only around teens (me and my sister) and our parents. But the one time she was around little kids (two boys, my cousins) she growled but only because one of them tried to grab her face. I have been around a small dog that really did bite without any warning. Our small male poodle mix. He was really horrible about biting. I mean literally you could sit next to him and gently pet him and he’d act like he liked it and then suddenly would change his mind and bite you. Unfortunately my experience with any type of poodle hasn’t been the best. They’re not mean per say but just so anxious and needy. Like the small poodle you’d be sitting on the couch and he’d jump up and purposely sit with his body up against your leg himself. But if you moved your leg at all it was 50/50 he might bite you for moving even slightly. It was a bad combination. Anxious but clingy, lol. My sister’s goldendoodle also has some noticeable poodle traits. Her dog is very anxious and clingy too, but doesn’t bite, I guess because she’s a big dog so not afraid of being squashed. The peke was a lot better because she was calm and confident.

Poor dog! No nose but far too much fur! I can't understand how people not only continue breeding extreme forms like this, but make them even extremer without seeing what they're dooing! He can't even "run" without getting out of breath! By the way, the thoung curling is a clear sign of stress-breathing as he can't get enough air! In the standard it's even written: "A long and profuse coat is desirable providing it does not obscure the shape of the body." On this dog you can only guess how he looks like! At the end of the show he even needs a cooling-matt because he can't regulate his own tepmerature!
@nicolaxoxo1
@nicolaxoxo1 4 жыл бұрын
Therese Roidinger my Pekes are shown in conformation AND they RUN in the FCAT competitions. Even after a run, they are not breathing loudly or stressed. I plan to show them in other performance events like barn hunt and rally next as they are nearly done in conformation. One is close to CH and one almost GCH. They have less hair so some judges here pass them up. I call them “Classic Pekes” They have no breathing issues nor history of heart problems in their family. They also have excellent temperaments. Mine are imported from Portugal.
@282Resi
@282Resi 4 жыл бұрын
@@nicolaxoxo1 By "run" you mean the circle around the stage? Or any other kind of competition where the dog has to show some real physikal work? I mean even an appropiate walk with running and sniffing sequences that lasts for more than 20 minutes (and at + 20°C) seems inpossible for these dogs. (I hate when you're on a walk and you can hear the dogs before seeing them because they just can't breath good enough to get enough air.) I would be glad if there where still some "healthy" dogs of these extrem breeds out there, but i never saw one! Instead i see owners that deny any problems.
@nicolaxoxo1
@nicolaxoxo1 4 жыл бұрын
@@282Resi By RUN, I mean RUN....look up FCAT competition. It is a timed 100 yard dash and my Pekes did this full speed no stopping with no loud breathing. In fact, they wanted to go again right away. This competition is a form of lure coursing.....based on hunting with sighthounds but any dog can do the FCAT competition if they are healthy and capable. Obviously Pekes normally do not do FCAT. Mine can and I want people to know that not all Pekes are unhealthy slugs. And no you will not hear mine before you see them.
@282Resi
@282Resi 4 жыл бұрын
@@nicolaxoxo1 But for real... 100 yards is like nothing. If the dog would allready show massive signs of distress after this distance, it would be highly disturbing! (Of course you have to keep the weather in mind!) I would be glad if your dogs are that healthy, but what is in 3, 5, or 7 years? Most problems often come with age (years of constant struggle to breathe often leads to gastorial problems, the soft palate keeps growing and growing, the nerves in the spine are constantly squeezed and damaged, ...) I write about Wasabi and the dogs you see when googling Pekinese (or Pug or english and french bulldog or japan chin, ...). These dogs mostly do not have a functional body. And it is highly normalized by people out there not seeing the problem in dogs snoring, not beeing able to sleep on their side in fear of overheating, dogs fainting after playing for 5 minutes, dogs eyes falling out because the skull is bred to round to look "cuter", ... There is a huge problem with backjard breeding and making money with sick dogs. And the problem mostly lays with people beeing uninformed and not knowing what a "cute round head" (for example) does mean for the dog!
@nicolaxoxo1
@nicolaxoxo1 4 жыл бұрын
Therese Roidinger 100 yard at full speed is not “nothing” for a small dwarf breed. Thankfully mine have NONE of the faults and attributes you mention. They do not snore, their eyes are not bulging, they can safely sleep in any position. They have no back problems. They ran the 100 yard dash twice in succession and wanted to go again (only 2 runs per day are allowed). You have not even seen mine, yet you are criticizing them.
