Something I forgot to mention that I have to emphasize here is that Manny had already done an hour and a half of other stuff before this sparring. Before this, he was doing compliance drills, katas/forms, and answering questions from the panelists. So if he looked tired like some of you mentioned, he was. This sparring part was at the end of the belt test. Also, the MCMAP guy might have been Army Combatives, I need to double check with Arnott about that. Apologies if I got the branch of military wrong! More Kenpo here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIrGYaiNYqh1rJI Arnott Kenpo (Manny's school) here: www.arnottkenpo.com/

Can't 100% confirm if the second guy is JKD. Maybe like 95% sure. There's not much else he could be using, except maybe a mix of Wing Chun and Boxing, which is essentially what constitutes JKD's hand game.

I am a black belt in Kenpo JiuJitsu, which is basically just a more aggressive style of Kenpo with a little bit more techniques (i.e. throws and armbars/non traditional submissions), and what people often fail to understand is that Kenpo is often times a very "kickboxing" like style, except you learn things with the intent of using them in the street instead of the cage. For example, we would learn that if we were ever put on the ground to gouge eyes out and bite skin off etc. Kenpo is a very real martial art (when used in it's highest form), and it's about time it gets the respect it deserves

This is a very Good clip. I run my Black belt Tests the same way. 12 three minute full contact rounds against 4 different fighters on a rotational basis. The second fighter doesn't like a Kenpo stylist and appears to doing a lot of flashy slapping moves that seem ineffective. That nothwithstanding, Kudos to the man in the white gig taking the test. Excellent job.

Yeah the second guy was throwing too many flicky arm techniques. That's a bad habit some people develop from not sparring with much contact-- they lose sight of the fact that one good punch is better than a dozen little taps and they just throw barrages of techniques that don't have much potential to be effective even if they were trying to do damage.

Totally disagree. It translates well after modification. I have been training and teaching “old school” Tae Kwon Do for forty years. We hit bags and conditioned our hands for bare knuckle punches. Very valuable. Ten or so years ago I took up boxing to supplement my style. It opened my eyes to many things. I train both. Have you trained serious boxing at all?
@majaimay
@majaimay 5 жыл бұрын
@@georgekondylis6723 Agreed, it all really depends on your ability to adapt what you know to new situations. Been doing dutch kickboxing for two years now and I've been able to successfully adapt very traditional karate techniques into being very useful and functional in a mostly orthodox kickboxing arena. The kind of stuff that for years now so many people preached was useless and showy and ineffective, you just have to learn how to adapt and modify accordingly.

Mike There is no excuse for not practicing the basics all the time. Developing bad habits is detrimental to one’s health. I’ve been knocked out, had my nose broken and my ass kicked from one corner to another. Those guys were better than me no doubt. But, what made it worse was that I had not developed the habits of keeping my hands up, tucking my chin, moving, breathing, timing, setting my opponent up. Once these things started happening, it was like “holy shit!” This is what makes high level fighters so good. I did a lot of traditional martial arts for years and to be honest, the sparring in general was shite. Once I joined a boxing gym and then moved on to an MMA all of that changed. I saw the light.

@@clacicle i find it's sport specific, karate often fights hands down, competition rules (quite often) are no head punches, take a look www.quora.com/Why-are-kicks-to-the-head-permitted-under-the-Kyokushin-Kumite-rules-whereas-punches-to-head-are-not kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ6bg5Samcqgp9k the emphasis on guard up chin tuck in the west comes a lot from boxing. imo traditional martial arts , which karate evolved from, would typically hold weapons, so it was more practical for the hands to be lower, as you can see with fencing.

Yes this karate type sparring does put technical skills to the test but what mma sparring does it teaches you to feel the pain and not be afraid of the hits. This allows practitioners to stay in the pocket and trade. I guarantee he wouldnt do half as good with contact. By the way i take nothing away from him. I just feel mma sparring is closer to the real thing.

I studied both. Kempo is like a flow of hand strikes mixed in with a few kicks and tkd is a flow of kicks mixed in with a few hand strikes. The footwork in Kempo is slightly better I was taught a frunt kick of a cat stance in Kempo also to move out the was at an angle always the only thing is the combos always seemed unrealistic to me until today if I'm not mistaken the guy in white is American Kempo because I was tought to block and immediately hit like a 4 or 5 piece combo which I thought was ridiculous. Tkd is more like move out the way and kick hands are mainly blocking or oleying the opposition away like a matador. Their is hand striking but its pinpointed and a lot fewer. When I learned boxing tho all of it came together it's like I found the missing ingredient and it was simply footwork and balance.

Weak! So the point in testing against the jiu jitsu guy was on his feet only? Clearly jiu jitsu would of won this. He was on his back and clearly uncomfortable on the ground. Kenpo guy just wasted all kinds of time learning something that doesn't help him on the ground which is where most fights end up. If you are trained in anything or not it typically ends on the ground. I never comment on videos but this just clearly tells me kenpo is only good for standup and might work if they are lucky enough to not face somebody who is a blue belt or higher in jiu jitsu. Just my $.02. Not trolling. Just my honest perception as somebody who has trained in multiple styles.

However, once you’ve had the chance to train with boxers, muy Thai fighters, MMA fighters, things change very quickly. Don’t believe me? Try it. I trained traditional martial arts for years and looking back, the sparring was embarrassingly bad. I saw the light though and joined a boxing gym and then moved on to an MMA gym. There is no excuse for neglecting the basics unless they’ve never been taught to you because your teacher didn’t know them. That was my excuse until I saw the light.

That was a really good video. A great sparring session. It takes me back to the years I spent in Tracy's Kenpo. I really miss stuff like that. During my time in Tracy's, we never went to the ground. But I spent 2 years learning Kenpo 5.0. There, they really incorporate BBJ. Which I feel is more realistic.

@@FightCommentary Kenpo 5.0 is Kenpo 5.0 it is not Ed Parker Kenpo , it is not Tracy's. Jeff Speakman has taken it in a different direction. Even though they may all be similar as in techniques and basics it has a different feel. I love Kenpo regardless of the style. It will always be my go to art.

This was cool. I thought that Karatekas did more point fighting considering they were the only ones who wore helmets. It wasn’t kudo that’s for sure. I’m not sure how things would’ve went if elbows were thrown, the Kenpo guy would be throwing elbows as well (I would imagine). If there was ground fighting the Jujutsu and MCMAP guys would’ve had no problem (though I think the Jujutsu guy pretty much had it), it was clear the Kenpo practitioner wasn’t taught Kenpo 5.0

I love the concept of various martial styles being a thing. Sadly, and always, it seems that once you put people of any style together, it turns into kickboxing/wrestling, etc. So, as someone who actually has experienced some very talented kenpoists, as well as other stylists, it seems to me that you're best bet is to put all the classical mess aside, as Bruce Lee used to say, and just become a dedicated athlete, focus on boxing, muay thai, submission escapes and takedown defense (you know, because you can't grapple safely on a city street). I do wish there was a fantasy world where we could see a master like Larry Tatum, walk into an octagon, and win a match in an MMA event. But then, I might as well wish aikido was an effective martial style as well or praying mantis Kung Fu, or drunken monk, or, you get the drift.

Kenpo aikido karate etc. are all bullshit since MMA became a thing, if you want to learn something start training jujitsu if you like grappling or boxing/muay thai if you like classic fighting, everything else is useless bullshit

@@semenstainsthemountaintops9497 First of all. Kenpo still has a lot to offer so to say it’s bullshit is pretty stupid, and yes while the techniques are not gonna be preformed as taught the principles will still be applied. For example I may use a bit from one technique and put it together will a basic. To put this simply if someone throws a punch I could parry it and do a elbow to the face and a knee to the groin. I’m still using the principles but I’m making it more faster. So to make it clear while some systems are more effective than others it’s truly stupid to say a system is useless or bullshit. Because it’s not meant for combat fighting. They’re still many uses for these systems other than that.

@@semenstainsthemountaintops9497 So how do you explain the folks who use karate in MMA? Do you actually do martial arts?
@semenstainsthemountaintops9497
@semenstainsthemountaintops9497 Жыл бұрын
@@bw5020 You can't compare "using" karate in MMA training to doing karate on its own. I used to do Kyokushin when I was a kid and the sport is very soft compared to muay thai, boxing or MMA. There is not enough contact for karate, aikido etc. to be put on the same level as the martial arts I've mentioned before, if you train to be a good fighter, karate alone will not be sufficient, muay thai on the other hand wlll be more than enough
