Something I forgot to mention that I have to emphasize here is that Manny had already done an hour and a half of other stuff before this sparring. Before this, he was doing compliance drills, katas/forms, and answering questions from the panelists. So if he looked tired like some of you mentioned, he was. This sparring part was at the end of the belt test. Also, the MCMAP guy might have been Army Combatives, I need to double check with Arnott about that. I am a black belt in Kenpo JiuJitsu, which is basically just a more aggressive style of Kenpo with a little bit more techniques (i.e. throws and armbars/non traditional submissions), and what people often fail to understand is that Kenpo is often times a very "kickboxing" like style, except you learn things with the intent of using them in the street instead of the cage. For example, we would learn that if we were ever put on the ground to gouge eyes out and bite skin off etc. Kenpo is a very real martial art (when used in it's highest form), and it's about time it gets the respect it deserves

Yeah the second guy was throwing too many flicky arm techniques. Mike There is no excuse for not practicing the basics all the time. Developing bad habits is detrimental to one’s health. I’ve been knocked out, had my nose broken and my ass kicked from one corner to another. Those guys were better than me no doubt. But, what made it worse was that I had not developed the habits of keeping my hands up, tucking my chin, moving, breathing, timing, setting my opponent up. Once these things started happening, it was like “holy shit!” This is what makes high level fighters so good. I did a lot of traditional martial arts for years and to be honest, the sparring in general was shite. Once I joined a boxing gym and then moved on to an MMA all of that changed. I saw the light.

I studied both. Kempo is like a flow of hand strikes mixed in with a few kicks and tkd is a flow of kicks mixed in with a few hand strikes. The footwork in Kempo is slightly better I was taught a frunt kick of a cat stance in Kempo also to move out the was at an angle always the only thing is the combos always seemed unrealistic to me until today if I'm not mistaken the guy in white is American Kempo because I was tought to block and immediately hit like a 4 or 5 piece combo which I thought was ridiculous. Tkd is more like move out the way and kick hands are mainly blocking or oleying the opposition away like a matador. Their is hand striking but its pinpointed and a lot fewer. When I learned boxing tho all of it came together it's like I found the missing ingredient and it was simply footwork and balance.

looks good but the guy in black needs to learn how to check low kicks, blocking kicks under waist level with your hands is very amaturist

I love the concept of various martial styles being a thing. Sadly, and always, it seems that once you put people of any style together, it turns into kickboxing/wrestling, etc. So, as someone who actually has experienced some very talented kenpoists, as well as other stylists, it seems to me that you're best bet is to put all the classical mess aside, as Bruce Lee used to say, and just become a dedicated athlete, focus on boxing, muay thai, submission escapes and takedown defense (you know, because you can't grapple safely on a city street). I do wish there was a fantasy world where we could see a master like Larry Tatum, walk into an octagon, and win a match in an MMA event. But then, I might as well wish aikido was an effective martial style as well or praying mantis Kung Fu, or drunken monk, or, you get the drift.

Kenpo aikido karate etc. are all bullshit since MMA became a thing, if you want to learn something start training jujitsu if you like grappling or boxing/muay thai if you like classic fighting, everything else is useless bullshit

There is a video on this channel of a guy using drunken style...pretty entertaining

@@semenstainsthemountaintops9497 First of all. Kenpo still has a lot to offer so to say it’s bullshit is pretty stupid, and yes while the techniques are not gonna be preformed as taught the principles will still be applied. For example I may use a bit from one technique and put it together will a basic. To put this simply if someone throws a punch I could parry it and do a elbow to the face and a knee to the groin. I’m still using the principles but I’m making it more faster. So to make it clear while some systems are more effective than others it’s truly stupid to say a system is useless or bullshit. Because it’s not meant for combat fighting. They’re still many uses for these systems other than that.

@@semenstainsthemountaintops9497 So how do you explain the folks who use karate in MMA? Do you actually do martial arts?
@semenstainsthemountaintops9497 Жыл бұрын
@@bw5020 You can't compare "using" karate in MMA training to doing karate on its own. I used to do Kyokushin when I was a kid and the sport is very soft compared to muay thai, boxing or MMA. There is not enough contact for karate, aikido etc. to be put on the same level as the martial arts I've mentioned before, if you train to be a good fighter, karate alone will not be sufficient, muay thai on the other hand wlll be more than enough
