The video was especially controversial, at the time. The anti-war message did not go down well, and her music was banned from radio, thereafter. I love the album and video to this song. Madame X (& videos) is American Life 2.0.

You definitely need to get the hook of "American Life" and react to Madonna's "God Control" and "Dark Ballet", which are equally political and powerful videos.

Material Girl was 100% Satirical but nobody really got it. It fit the mold of a cute pop princess and she ran with it. This song is about questioning the American Dream - Does consumerism equate to happiness? The video takes the specific approach of questioning the war in Iraq and the complacency of the American elite who watch from afar and are unaffected by some of the atrocities and realities of war. An alternate version of the video has a Bush look alike in the audience.

Loved your reaction..yes please do more Madonna ..you'll be in for quite a ride ..she explores so many themes and never afraid to push buttons or challenge the status quo or the system...she is as much a visual artist as a musical one and her creativity and theatricality on tour is second to none.As she gained more commercial success she garnered complete creative control over her work and really came into her own ..there are so many cyphers, symbols and messages in her work .so ballsy and brave and she's still doing it today .love her xx

The lyric 'do I have to change my name' is about being a second generation migrant in America. It's a comment about migrants often feeling that they have to change their name in order to fit in/assimilate and succeed in their new home.

I listened to an interview with her at the time of AL release and she was also commenting on American Idol and all those shows that played to people who just wanted instant fame for the sake of fame, not being successful and receiving plaudits for the work/art you create. "Do I have to change my name will it get me far, should I lose some weight I am going to be a star. She turned the theme of the songs on Album that was about her disassociated with it. There was talk in the air about possible war in Iraq and she wanted to make a piece of work that showed the reality of war. By the time the video was ready for release America had begun the invasion of Iraq and part of her felt that it would be in bad taste to circulate to the networks. A Year later by the time of her Re-invention Tour it was obvious that the invasion was a mistake. So she recreated the video live on stage each nice, but the performance was the video content x 10!!! ✌️✌️🙌🙌🖕🖕❤️❤️

The world literally watched Iraq being invaded on television, live. This is the perspective that defines the video. If you look at the front row viewers, they represent the actual people who inflict the war on people for their gain. The Saddam-Bush version, in which they were sitting front row, side by side and Bush catching the grenade, revealing its a lighter actually and lights up his cigar, was filmed for the ReInvention Tour. Madonna didn’t release the video for it might had have been misinterpreted and in poor taste; she had done the video two months before the war started and by the release day, the invasion had already happened. She received death threats for her family as well. Nevertheless the US, especially Bush sympathizers declared her anti American and managed to end her 20 years long running streak with released singles going top 10 at least. None of the singles charted, radios refused to play the singles. 20 years later the album is a masterpiece. It’s the USA way.

There’s a lot going on. It would be better to do some research before viewing it. América went on war that year, that month actually to which she was a loud opposer. So there you have it
