From my amateur eye AM are starting to look more polished. They seem to be controlling their height well
@maxhugen4 жыл бұрын
Does look that way today. Might depend partially on the steadiness of the wind? Looks like they were flying a bit higher at times, possibly to reduce foil arm and rudder drag.

They may need that maneuverability. I would sure love to see what happens when two of these try to bugger one another's air. I bet each team has developed incredible video simulation games.

how fast are these boats going and what is max wind speed they can sail in
@izziebon4 жыл бұрын
I understand its around 48 knots?
@maxhugen4 жыл бұрын
Wind speed limits for the AC are 6-24 knots. All teams are a bit coy about top speed, but say "high 40s". They run into probs then with cavitation.
@jpm744 жыл бұрын
You can get pretty accurate get time distance speed estimates from all the videos when they sail perpendicular out of frame to a still shot with the fastest speeds about 48 knots. Here, Defiant was doing about 36 knots at 4:18 and 38 knots at 6:11. And she was clipping that during what looks like a light breeze day!

This is look a whole lot better from the previous videos. They seem to have the stability of the boat worked out a LOT better now. I am not seeing them touch down all the time. Previously they looked somewhat wobbly. Their tacks and gybes, however, have always been spot on and so far look the smoothest with very few touchdowns as they come around. Emirates seems to still be having trouble with that the last footage I saw. I wish I could say this will be an interesting race (cause it won't be. It will be an interesting start and then a boring drag race like all foiling match races) but it does look like the boats are going to be cool to watch at least.

Matt, very interesting comment, thanks, Mike

ETNZ touchdowns in previous vids looked like ventilation. No change in angle, just a drop. In the previous video they have different T foils port and starboard -a manta and a forward bulb. Both had wide span and some large fences. The intersection is the most challenging point and the 90 deg is more difficult to keep constant pressure than the 120 AM is on. T should be more stable and easier to sail but it hits cavitation problems before the Y. I don't think there is a way around it. IMHO ENTZ team was ahead on control but their foil development looks like it is running late. If they just are hiding their real foils I don't think anyone is fooled.

This makes me think if my grandad. He was almost unbeatable racing on the harbour. I remember walls just chocked full of trophies. No Americas Cup in those days. I only did a bit of sailing. I like it, but was always too busy away working down in the Southern Ocean for months on end.

@@skyak4493 Thanks for your reply. I should have been more specific. When heading to an upwind mark will it be faster for an AC75to gybe like a multi-hull or tack like a yacht?
@skyak44934 жыл бұрын
@@pfied765 The fastest way around the upwind mark is neither a tack or a gybe. If you watch the video there are maneuvers where the boat turns 90 degrees or more with no visible change in sail or foil arm -those are upwind mark simulations. Aim high and tight of the mark at about a 45 to true win, veer off 90 around it and head down -sails continuously under pressure. If they miss the mark and pass under they need to turn 180 through the wind, switch sides of both sails and foils. I don't think I have seen that done yet but I am sure they are looking for tactics that could force their opponent to miss the mark.

These are America's Cup yachts, inshore matchrace yachts basically, not offshore/ocean racers for races like The Ocean Race or Vendee Globe. But, the IMOCA 60s (single-handed /short-handed ocean racing yachts) for example isn't that far behind in terms of foiling these days. They don't fly completely out of the water, they still have "normal" canting keels and are built a bit heavier than the AC75s
