There are kids wearing Messi (and Cristiano Ronaldo) jerseys in Africa, in Asia, on all five continents. You won't see a kid wearing a Tom Brady jersey in Russia. You won't see a kid wearing a Gretzky jersey in India. There are kids wearing Messi jerseys in Great Britain, Russia, Beijing. Brady, Lebron, Gretzky, rival Messi only in the US and Canada. The only US athlete who can sit at the same table as Messi, on a global level, is Jordan. No one else.

Well they were not really debating world wide, but in usa or canada or i missed it? Also maybe because in my country number 1 sport is basketball I might be biased, but Lebron is hella famous. Though I had no idea who s Tom Brady or Gretzky at all. Also it's besides a point, but I'm thinking a bit now about Jordan. He is very famous as even in some books I think when I was in school it could been throwed in, for example if you learning english as second or third language, there might be some sentence with Jordan. So I feel many people know Jordan from such things even though they never seen him play or even cared about basketball to begin with. Sometimes things are widely known for bit different reasons I suppose. Now when I think about it, everyone here knew Michael Schumacher too, though like 1 out of 20 ppl would have watched F1 ever, prolly even less, like 1 out of 40-50, but everyone knew who he was and was like a synonym for ppl who drives good or very fast
@Fyane004Ай бұрын
@@Lokalo1 Yes, I missed the great Schumacher. But my comment points to something else, Messi is a global athlete. Jordan is known globally. I'll give you an example. Who is the best athlete in history? Ali?, Schumacher?, Brady?, Cristiano?, Messi?, Jordan?, Federer?, Nadal?, Navratilova?, I say that the best of all the best is Merckx. Now, who is the most globally known athlete? That's where things can change a bit. That's where Tyson would come into the debate, for example. What happens is that now they have a global athlete, as well as a historical one, in a country that admires (or knows and recognizes) few athletes of absolute global level, who are from outside its borders. There's MILLIONS of players who compete for spots in pro football association teams. IIRC there's an estimated 30 million or so people who play Basketball which includes people playing pickup games and stuff, and the numbers for gridiron due to its complexity are significantly smaller... but there's BILLIONS who play association football. The USA is actually incredibly insular when it comes to sports and only now are they realizing the sheer immensity of a sport they ignored because it wasn't "American enough".

Everyone ignores the fact that most european or latin American immigrants are soccer fans, and there are millions of those in the US

So? That still confirms that they're popular worldwide and that american athletes are only popular in the US, with only a few legendary exceptions.
@gerardoamadopelen143119 күн бұрын
@@facundomontivero2299 That is correct, my comment is about the great potential for growth and development of the sport in the US if real interest and the right people and incentives were set in motion to make it happen. Just the sport infrastructure the US has already in place dwarfs that of any other country, so if they would really made an effort to become a power house they would be able to compete at the highest levels. That is what I meant by my comment

The thing with the US is, that with all the private leagues, they are more into players than teams. So i wonder if football will continue its development once messi retire(wich could be in the next 2 to 4 years)

I've always had a feeling that Messi and Beckham would work. Never expected the casual conversations, but the aftermath of this duo could be the turning point for football in de US.

This is not the 1st they bring a star player to USA to try to get they hooked so I am a bit skeptical that it will work, but maybe the modern day conditions will help

comparing tom brady and lebron james to messi, is like lining a 2007 volkswagen passat up against a jet powered drag machine on the drag strip

It's unbelievable how much changes Messi brought just by his sheer presence, even more when Americans finally saw him play in the field. Especially joining an once bottom tier club in the non-dominated football ⚽ country. Kinda makes me wish that Ronaldo was also joining the MLS instead of going to Saudi, rekindle their legendary El Clásico rivalry once again just like in Spain...
