Mabuhay! Please visit Iloilo too. Just 4 hours away from Boracay by land. ILOILO is the regional capital of Western Visayas, a first class highly urbanized city, boast a unique blend of ancient history, old-world charm and comforts of a modern city. Iloilo is more than just a tasty La Paz Batchoy (like Ramen) or the colorful Dinagyang festival (The best tourism event of PH, every 4th Sunday of January). Do you love seafood?, then you must dine to the two of the most highly recommended restaurants, Tatoy's, famous for its native roasted chicken and seafood, when at Breakthrough, grilled Managat fish and Binakol Chicken or Beef is the best, seafood is also available. Iloilo has the freshest seafood in the region because of the abundance from near by towns and provinces in Panay island, Ilonggo cuisine is one of the most delicious in the country, in fact Iloilo is now dubbed as the "Food Haven of the Philippines" and recognized internationally by UNESCO as the Creative City of Gastronomy in the Philippines. Visit our old Central Business District "Calle Real" (Royal Street) where the old world charm and the past is always present, the second old CBD declared as a heritage site after Escolta in Manila, J.M. Basa Street in Calle Real is famous for its Siopao (stuffed steamed buns), you can try it at Roberto's or Kamsukkee also at Mr.Cow in Chinatown Iloilo just a walk away from the said street. Visit Iloilo Business Park (by Megaworld) awarded as the best township development in Asia in 2018, behold the beauty of its Parisian and Italian inspired edifices and enjoy its everyday festive vibe. Aside from old historical churches (must visit is Molo church and must try the famous Jo-anns fishball at Molo Plaza), and mansions Iloilo is also known for its Museums, a must visit if you want to know more about its history, people culture, traditions, arts etc. Our beaches outside the city like Isla Gigantes in Carles was recognized as one of best by Forbes magazine, not far away is Guimaras island and it's sweetes mangoes. Experience nature in the city? visit Iloilo River Esplanade, the longest linear park in the country, the best to jog, walking, exercise or just enjoy the sun and the river (nature) especially in the morning, boat ride is also available in the area. Fyi: all public markets in the city are being modernized, two of the seven are being positioned to compete with other modern markets in the world. The city has great and modern shopping malls too like SM City Iloilo, Festive Walk Iloilo, Robinsons at City proper, Jaro district and Pavia and Vista Mall to name a few, but many Ilonggos are now very excited to the soon to rise SM Supermall in Jaro district, according to it's management the future mall is bigger than SM Megamall, the construction is expected to start in 2024. S&R like Costco is also present located in Mandurriao district and the soon Landers Superstore at Iloilo Business Park to give you the brands you used to enjoy back home. For your entertainment IMAX with laser (a Canadian Company) the first in the Visayas is now open in SM City Iloilo to give you a world-class movie going experience. Don't forget to bring home Iloilo with you, Biscocho by Biscocho haus in Jaro and Galletas by Panaderia de Molo Est. in 1872 is probably the oldest bakeshop in the country located in Molo district is the best pasalubong or take home, also in Molo district is the famous Pansit Molo (like wonton soup). I'm a 72yo Aussie, met a nice 56yo Filipina lady in January 2023, in a small village which is close to Santa Cruz, capital of Laguna Province, Luzon. Not much to do, suits me. Plan on travelling around the province soon. Paying US$150 PER MONTH for an unfurnished 2 brm, single story, solid concrete apartment. There's no contract, no minimum stay or deposit. All based on trust 👍. Spent about 30,000pesos for furniture like double bed, bar refrigerator, tables and chairs, and aircon. All can be taken with me when/if I move out. Handy to shops and walk to town centre. Excellent public transport to most surrounding towns, including Santa Cruz. Conclusion: Quite happy, not so if you're a young stud looking for bars, clubs and loose women.

I've stayed at an Air BnB in the same building - immediately recognized the pool and surrounding areas. $630/mo seems a bit steep, those 1-bedroom condos are merely 35-ish square/meters, great if you're a minimalist. Mactan Newtown does present itself nicely, but it is bubble living. The Robinson's grocery store has the basics, not much beyond that. There's a few restaurants too, which will become routine after you've spent some time there. I would like to see how it develops over the next 5-10 years.....with more amenities and variety.....it has potential. Airport access is 20 minutes with traffic, and flying out of Mactan Cebu International is far better than dealing with NAIA.

Stayed in that complex in an Airbnb back in august. Looks like he's in the third building we were in the second. Good luck with the outdoor nightclub they have there in the vacant lot across the street. it gets LOUD at night. It may not still be a thing but it was EVERY night when we stayed there. That area is annoying though as those sales people are out there every day handing out sales brochures for the condo's. Area as a whole is pretty expensive and VERY touristy as the lapu lapu shrine is literally just down the street. Not a quiet place at all. We stayed there for almost 2 weeks and probably wouldn't again.

I’ve also decided to move my base to Mactan Newtown - same building at 8NB. I’ve also chosen the area in preference to Ayala which I also love. IT Park didn’t figure as a place to live. Megaworld is the developer - more plans in progress for further development including condos, lagoon and retail. Lapu Lapu is part of Mactan island. The beach - accessible to owners/tenants without payment - exists and is nice to have but does not compare to a nice sandy beach. I wasn’t aware of shuttle but it’s a short walk with entry wristband available from Savoy(?) Hotel. Prices seem to have increased in past year. Pool is 70 meters I believe and is totally awesome (may need to be temporarily closed soon for a renovation project).

@Joepoe20041....Please don't give false or wrong information if you don't know 100% of things you're talking about. Camotes Islands are not part of Mactan Islands. Mactan Islands only have two local government units: Lapulapu City and municipality of Cordova. Lapulapu City includes outlying islands and islets, some permanently inhabited, some are not, of which Olango Island is the biggest. Cordova lies to the south end of the Mactan Island and physically separated by a very narrow inlet, not a river like what most people believe. Cordova also includes a few islets of which only Gilutungan is permanently inhabited while Nalusuan Islet is occupied by a resort who is also a caretaker of a marine sanctuary.

Tubers love to say PH is cheaper than the US. Clearly this is nonsense. $630/mo for a place that yeah, like Jerry said, he can almost touch opposite walls. Comparing apples to apples rent is cheaper in PH than the US, but not by a huge amount. As far as views go...I once built a house in the Eddy Mts across from Mt Shasta in N CA. A massive view if Mt Shasta. Takes about 2 months before I didn't even notice the view. Views are special for a very short time. Most people want a view just to impress other people. Same with things like the infinity pool...Spectacular!!! But only for a couple weeks. Then it's just a pool. 80% of people living there don't even use the pool regularly and 99% don't use the exercise room. Not saying it won't be a great place to live. Could be super. Just saying be careful about getting dazzled by the shinny objects. Try to look at the things that will matter to you.

Glad you pointed out how flat and nicely paved the area of Mactan was. Everywhere I was in the PI, outside of BGC, I noted the dangerous conditions of the sidewalks and asked myself if I wanted to deal with that as I aged. I thought Baguio was the worst, because on top of the irregularity, it was often steep. It's nice to have good walking areas. USA has its problems, but we have the best sidewalks and strictest building codes of anywhere I have been.

This was a pretty good one. The title caught my eye. Moving across the world for retirement in your eighties takes a certain bit of nerve. It looks like Jerry is getting things dialed in with his shirtless and tanned buddha belly hanging out. You oughta be able to do stuff like that when you are retired. Jerry's choice to go high rent in a 1st class city is a pretty OK thing to do if you can afford it. Some of the nicely built condo towers that are also well managed are pretty nice. There was no mention of other incidental costs of living in a place like that but if it's nice, you can be sure there are other incidental costs. There are also other considerations for doing the urban scene living up in the air in a large city but all in all, it's more fun in the Philippines. Congrats to Jerry and good job on the video.

This area in Cebu is perfect for those coming from the US or western countries. Mactan Newtown might be one of the best places to retire in the Philippines without breaking the bank. You picked a winner Chad, and Jerry is in a much better place to live.

I did my undergrad at the University of Indiana. I wanted to do further education at Notre Dame but I couldn’t afford it. They wanted $60,000 US per year. So I talked to the Navy recruiting office and they agreed to pay my university costs at Notre Dame if I gave the Navy 4 years. So at the U.S. Navy’s expense, I completed my Masters and PHD at Notre Dame. I then entered the Navy and completed 4 years service. In the Navy, I worked in the area of hospital health care administration. I was 30 when I left the Navy and walked straight into a hospital CEO job in Chicago. From there I spent 25 years working as a hospital CEO and President in places like India, Hong Kong, Bangkok (2 different stints over 6 years), Manila (2 years) and Phnom Penh. I finished up my career in Dubai and retired from there in September 2022 (my Filipino girlfriend Sheila is still there as she works as a police officer there and has done so for 6 years). My next hospital posting after Chicago was in 2008 to a hospital in Cambodia. I was offered Jersey City and Cambodia. When I arrived in Cambodia in 2008, there was only 4 paved roads. Somehow in the late 1990’s, I also first visited Cambodia. At that time there were only 2 paved roads. I spent one year there then. Also, somehow despite being in Cambodia, I still managed in the 6 years up to 2010 to work as hospital CEO and President at a hospital in Bangkok (before transferring to Hua Hin). I earned $500,000 US for this and my apartment was 1,200 square feet and only cost $300 which my employer paid for. I get confused about this but the hospital had between 16,000 and 100,000 employees. Between 2008 and 2010, there was political unrest between the redshirts and the yellowshirts. Supporters of the military blocked access to the hospital and demanded money from people trying to enter the hospital. I arranged that over $1,000,000 was paid to allow people to enter the hospital. Then a reporter from the Bangkok Post came to see me. I expressed my frustrations to them. Then the next day, I was featured in a front page article in the Bangkok Post. As a result of this I was arrested and taken to jail. I had never had so much as a parking ticket before this. I was initially put into a cell with about 40 others. I still don’t mind pooping in a bucket because of this experience. I was then put in a cell with a notorious Russian arms dealer, Viktor Bout (even though I know him personally, I pronounce his name as ‘bowt’ when everyone else, including him, pronounces it ‘boot’). Vicktor is known as the Merchant of Death. I spent 21 or 22 days total in the Thai prison and in that time I went from weighing 240 pounds to 182 pounds. I wouldn’t have minded the diet of rice and cucumber soup but I hate cucumbers. The US Government then arranged my release and a one-day visa for Cambodia. After travelling from Survarnabhumi to Phnom Penh, I returned to the US where the first thing I did was eat some Taco Bell. The Thai government blacklisted me from visiting Thailand but this was lifted after several years and I have returned several times since. After my Taco Bell, I didn’t stay long in the US as I had a hospital CEO placement at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong. I was in Hong Kong from 2010 to 2012. I had a car there but could only drive it to work on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays due to the vehicle having red registration plates. I had to catch public transport the other days. Parking fees were more per month than my condo cost me when I lived in Dumaguete. I get a bit confused but when I lived in Hong Kong, I either had a 250 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment which cost $4,000 US per month or a 376 square foot, 1 bedroom apartment which cost $3,000 per month. During the 2012 to 2022 year period, I worked in the other places I have earlier mentioned. I also visited mainland China on and off for 6 years. In 2021, I spent 9 months in Cambodia, 2 in Phnom Penh and 7 in Siem Reap. I bought a Honda CRV when I was there which I had to get the windows tinted to the darkest tint as I kept getting targeted in a made up offence scam by the corrupt Cambodian Police. My fluent Khmer was of no use when trying to get out of paying the police fines. I only lost a few hundred bucks when I sold that Honda. I still have a car stashed away in Dumaguete which I will have to deal with upon my return to the Philippines.

I have been to Mactan Newtown but right when it was starting in 2019. It looks much better now. I liked the view from his apartment. I have been to IT Park and Ayala Mall area but not Cebu Business Park. The medical facilities in the Cebu City area, though considered good for the Philippines, were not good at all compared to Thailand. They needed a metro rail system in Cebu last time I was there too. These 2 things could be major considerations when moving to the Cebu City area.

The well-known Ayala Mall (as opposed to much inferior one in IT Park) is part of Cebu Business Park so if you have been to main Ayala Mall, then you have been to Cebu Business Park 😆

All he needs now is contingency plan, in case of emergency .he can always hire live in or live out household help for $100/month . he needs to find friends within the building or who lives nearby ,who will not take advantage of him . if im not mistaken it is also close to the long boardwalk and night food market . he may need a 4 large wheeled walker or a quad/lofstrand crutch and a soft brace for balance and mitigate knees pain .

he needs to hire a maid or houseboy or all around helper .thats what the rich filipinos do with their old folks .they wheel them around via wheelchair or walker.i work here in the USA,with elderly folks . Many of them live by themselves and just waiting for their last breath to occur and its very depressing .Many rely on their neighbors ,while others rely on the Caregivers for few hrs each day . Those ,who are not qualify for Careprovider services ,they ended up in Nursing homes. @@youngandfree93
