There's nothing unpatriotic about calling out media manipulation and people's unwillingness to think uncritically about whatever they're told. Don's story is funny to me because I've seen plenty of folks on the right who have disowned friends and family for being on the left and not many the other way round. Personally when I see people getting triggered, regardless of whether they're on the left or the right, I wonder how much independent thinking really goes into the construction of their views.

@@Koake1002 That is a pretty big generalization. I'm a punk fan and I still like their early stuff. Most uber-punks avoid them, and some treat them as a guilty pleasure. When they first played Florida in the early 90's (pre-fame) the room was packed with punks, at the time, the only people who knew who they were. A lot of people dropped off the GD train over time (myself included), and their sound became more varied, but they still had punchy, angry songs sprinkled throughout their albums. And chanting a modified/updated MDC lyric at the Grammys is pretty punk rock. They never forgot where they came from, no matter how big they got. Saying they're not punk rock is like saying the Ramones, the Clash, Descendents, or Buzzcocks aren't. They're all catchy and easy to digest. I would like to address one thing I disagreed with. Music + lyrics (and by extension a music video) is Art, not Media. Even though it may be heard on the radio or seen on television, a song is no different than a painting, a poem, a film, or a sculpture. It is the artist's responsibility to put forth their point of view, which of course many people may disagree with, and not waiver from that point of view no matter the consequences. Of course some music (i.e. Art) is more superficial and is created to enhance experiences, bring joy, excite, soothe, etc. Other music is created to question, provoke, resist, incite, etc. E.g. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Sex Pistols, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, and yes, Greenday.

This song was written shortly after 9/11, released in 2004, and the focuses on the media mania that happened after the Twin Towers collapsed, and the unfair restrictions placed on a wide swath of American citizens and residents from a number of Middle Eastern countries following those events. The propaganda he's referencing isn't Democratic or Republican, per se, it's about how all Muslims were tarred with the same brush after that event, and media mania was used to justify iron-clad restrictions of travel to and from America. Two years later, in 2003, the same propaganda was used to justify Bush's false claims of WMDs in Iraq and the subsequent illegal invasion of that country.

American military brat here. I grew up in Europe and have a very different upbringing from non-military kids. When this song came out in 2004 I was traveling abroad a lot, due to what was going in the world and my job at the time I tried to blend in where I could (not possible in Asia). Most Europeans would be shocked to find out I was from the US, they figured I was Canadian. Then they pointed out a loud mouth bleached blonde woman and said that was what they viewed us all as, I proved them wrong that we are not all like that. AKA "Ugly Americans" - loud and obnoxious. I love my country but we have a lot of issues and there doesn't seem to be anybody wanting to grow past those issues.
@DaveB-hg7el2 ай бұрын
I was fortunate enough to be able to live in France when I was 18. Even back then the stereotype of the ugly American was held by the residents of the small town where I lived. Not because of me, but this town has an old cathedral which has played a significant role in the history of the Catholic church, and drew many visitors. I'm sad to say that I have seen many citizens of the US confirm the picture of the ugly American. But I do feel the need to disagree with the last part of your comment. I think that there are many people in the US who are aware of the issues we face, and are trying to do what they can to make changes. The problem, as I see it, is that not enough people can agree on what the issues are, and consequently don't see the need to work for changes. I think that the upcoming election is a possible turning point in the effort to make positive changes, but the outcome is still uncertain and even if the right wing loses they have shown their ability to be a roadblock in any effort to alter the status quo. My apologies for this long text, but your comment is interesting and there's a lot to unpack in it. I think those of us who are able to live in a different culture for an extended stay, get the chance to enlarge their perspective of the world and the people who share it with us. The ugly American refuses to learn, but those who do will help us all in the long run. Peace 💚

This song needs to be understood within the context of when it was released. The American public was lied to over WMD's. Without outright saying it, they allowed the American public to associate Iraq with 9/11. On the basis of this collective gaslighting, we illegally invaded another country, killed over 200,000 Iraqi civilians, lost over 7,000 brave American service people, lost over 8,000 civilian contractors, started a refugee crisis, and spent an estimated $8B. If you were politically conscious at the time, you knew immediately that this was gaslighting for the sake of war. Many of us protested and were attacked by the (predominately) right wing of the country who fell for the propaganda. With that being said, it is also fair to now criticize their TDS and hypocrisy. It is why I left the Democratic party. I would much rather side with someone I have disagreements with than the performative hypocrisy of propagandists. Sadly, they've lost the plot.

Like so many have said, this song, in fact this entire album has to be taken into context of when it was written, an answer to post 9/11 Bush era stuff. The album is a concept album in it’s entirety and there isn’t a bad song on it. Trump derangement syndrome isn’t it. That wasn’t even a thought on the horizon when this was written. If you really want something to dive into from this same album, Jesus of Suburbia. It’s long, but there is much to unpack about the apathy that so many were feeling at that time. If you can’t find something to relate to in that song, GreenDay definitely isn’t for you. Little side note, there is a Broadway play based on this album and it is amazing.

Thats a predjudice in and of itself. You can be anti Trump/Anti Kamala-Biden and still hold the beliefs of said party. The figure head doesnt speak for said party in totality. Lines are getting blurred, stances are being set as part of the game. You dont have to agree with 100% of anything to cast a vote. Songs a banger and holds truth no matter what your views are and who you know.

And that people just go along with it using it as proof for their point of view. My family is divided and I see the fighting first hand. Why can’t we come back towards the middle again? Do we need to buy into the hate and separation? It’s okay that people have different opinions and we should respect them. I’ve never been a fan of any politician. At the time when George W was in power, numerous music artists stood up and voiced opposition to him. Some received severe backlash over their comments at the time (such as the Dixie Chicks). You also had a few musicians who stood up and spoke for the opposing views. The comment "redneck agenda" was referencing George W's supposed quest for the oil overseas. George W came from Texas and some took to calling the "Redneck President", supposedly. I am from Texas and never heard him called that.

This was put out when this country was experiencing massive, thoughtless, knee-jerk patriotism at the start of the Iraq war and people were cheering the deaths of a population who were living (up until then) under a long-term, murderous tyrant. So I think you’re right about people not realizing the stereotypes and inherent biases each of us have. I got the message in your response to your statement about the “redneck” lyric, and then witnessed it in your response to learning their California origins. Yes, there are extremists both in California and in redneck-America who want to burn the system down and rebuild it in their own image. Most of us, though, just want a safe and thriving place to live and raise our families. The disagreement is not on where we want to go, but on how we think best to get there.

You can and should critique something you love if you think parts of it are damaging and hypocritical. Praising something no matter what isn't love it's delusional. I was born and raised in Arkansas before moving to Colorado after college so I could be called a redneck I guess, but I wouldn't take offense. I feel like this song is mostly critiquing sensationalized media and propaganda. While pointing out that something is clearly wrong with the direction we've been heading where we've become so divided for having different beliefs. Most of the time the friction is over sensationalized nonsense that has little to no impact on the average persons daily life instead of focusing on things like corporate money in politics ensuring that the politicians we elect aren't acting in the best interest of the average citizen. Instead of focusing on the disappearing middle class and the death of the American Dream (which arguably never existed in the first place) due to things like wage stagnation, automation, and corporate greed infiltrating politics. It's the whole bread and circus argument. Keep the populus fed and entertained and uneducated so they'll be too apathetic to fight back. Keep us so divided over nonsense that we won't come together to force positive change because we forget that we have way more in common than we don't. If the working class isn't united we have no power to force money out of politics so some of the people we elect to the government might actually represent the average American citizen instead of corporate interests, party ideology, and selfishly furthering your career/wealth. The average member of Congress is a multimillionaire and many of them engage in obvious insider trading and cronyism that goes unchecked. Anytime you allow a group of people to police themselves it's going to result in bad behavior especially corruption and greed. I think these things should concern everyone regardless of political affiliation. I think part of it is also the two party system, but it's becoming more and more of a problem because people are spending less time interacting in person and more time interacting online where the algorithms incentivize divisive content. I stopped using social media completely around 2018, I've never watched 24 hour news networks, and I quickly realized that most of the time whatever people were arguing about online had zero impact on my life... And yet I was able to remain informed about the most pressing issues we face. When you realize that these days somewhere between 30-50% of social media posts/comments are coming from bots and disinformation campaigns you can see why the way things are portrayed online and in sensationalized media is largely irrelevant to the average person's daily life. It's just NPCs, opportunitistic grifters, trolls, virtue signaling, and normal people who've bought into that bullshit derailing any chance at having a real, honest conversation that reflects the daily lives of the average citizen.
