American Popper Fly Pattern Tutorial

Tying up an American Hackle Popper for those summer top water slams.

This fly uses between 15-20 American Hackle feathers from Whiting farms. Its a great feather for these due to its length, color availability, durability, and stiffness of the fibers. If you don't already have a few saddles in a couple colors, its a must for tying streamers.

Quite adequate instruction. I agree with using organic materials instead of synthetic. I remember when Poppers were made with Cork and Deer Hair.🫶👊👍🤙🤙

Correct. They come in both options. I like the saddles personally but you can use either

2/0 to 4/0 usually. Really depends on how big of head I’m using. You gotta make sure you got room to hook a fish

What's your opinion about weed guards on poppers?

Absolutely. Where I fish them I don’t have much surface weeds so I usually don’t tie them in. For anywhere with surface weeds they are a must

There’s a few different styles of weed guards too. It’s always worth experimenting to see what works best for you
