When i first started listening to Ren, I didnt connect with some of his songs at first listen because it was so far out of my wheelhouse of what I would normally listen to but the more familiar with Ren I got, the more amazing those tracks became. Now the songs I didnt initially connect with have actually become some of my favorites. You have to be in a place where your in tune with him to truly grasp how amazing what hes doing really is. Love what you do bro! Ren is worthy of every bit of attention he gets. Thanks for spotlighting him. It helped me to see his genius.

Seen most of BP reactions but I don't often comment. This has to be one of the best reaction channels! He can have a producer, an engineer, a songwriter, someone who is super knowledgeable about certain instruments, next maybe a photographer, the next guest maybe a rapper that freestyles for us and the next guest could be Don either way it goes, I learn shit every episode and I love it. Hey guys, I love both of these songs; loved them enough that I went searching for the sample that Ren used in Ocean when I first heard it. Many people have used that sample but I THINK the origin is Autograf - Dream. Maybe someone can correct me if it's not. The only thing I can't figure out is that, in Ren's version, there is a pitch change in the melody on the third verse. I don't know production well enough to know if pitch can be changed like that. Love your reactions!

So I'm interested in this concept of a using a sample of other songs for an original song, not necessarily so much if it's lyrically an homage to another piece, but if this is maybe a genre difference I'm unaware of. Because many artists borrow similar chord progressions from previous songs, but it's never really referred to as a "sample", it's just the same progression so at what point would you say "oh that's a sample from this older song, he's nodding to this artist" vs. simply saying "Oh that's a similar progression as this other song I know"? I'm just trying to learn, because it's an area of music construction I'm unfamiliar with.

A sample is a snippet of someone else’s song literally cut into the current song. In the early days of rap, a DJ would have two turntables and create the beat by mixing, matching and scratching from albums. Then he might rap over it. Then there might be a sample, meaning an actual vocal pulled from an album. And there might be a dozen or more albums in the rotation. So that’s what they mean when they say sample .
