This song is Neil Peart's (drummer & lyricist) modern adaptation of Twains original story. It's about young men like you and me, & how we navigate our way through todays world. "Todays Tom Sawyer". The location was a recording studio in Quebec Canada, where Rush (Canadian band) recorded a lot of this album. The studio, Le Studio, is no longer there.

@erikthompson619

Well, not exactly an adaptation of Twain's story. Neil started off from a poem by lyricist Pye Dubois, of Max Webster fame, reworked it a little and fit the Tom Sawyer reference in there because he simply thought the character fit in there attitudewise. It's kind of confusing to anyone who is not Neil Peart.
@TheRandalltex
@TheRandalltex Жыл бұрын
@@erikthompson619 Yes agreed on the Dubois influence 100%, but the opening line & song title, for me at least, cements this as more an adaptation from Twain than anything. I'll go 70/30 :)

Tom Sawyer is an icon. Rush’s song begins, “Today’s Tom Sawyer…” so it’s not about the old Tom Sawyer, it’s embracing what a modern Tom Sawyer might be.

This is a quote from drummer Neil Peart, who co-wrote the lyrics: "Tom Sawyer was a collaboration between myself and Pye Dubois, an excellent lyricist who wrote the lyrics for Max Webster. His original lyrics were kind of a portrait of a modern day rebel, a free-spirited individualist striding through the world wide-eyed and purposeful. I added the themes of reconciling the boy and man in myself, and the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be-namely me, I guess."

They're Canadian it was recorded there. Rush is one of the greatest rock trios in the world and their drummer Neil Peart (RIP) was one of the greatest drummer's to ever live earning the nickname "The Professor" because no matter how good a drummer was Neil could take them to school and teach them new thing's also he played drums with clinical precision.

Rush has over 150 songs, and most of them have deep meanings, or tell a story. Tom Sawyer is one of the few where the meaning is more abstract. I've been a Rush fan since the 70s, and I still am not really sure what the song is supposed to mean, except maybe describing some guy. Mark Twain wrote both Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. This song was recorded in Le Studio, up in Quebec Canada, and I'm pretty sure this video was taken while they were actually recording the song. Great reaction, man! I hope you check out more Rush!

They are in a legendary Canadian recording studio called Le Studio, in the province of Quebec. Welcome to the world of Rush….they began in the early 1970s, and only ceased to exist as a band in 2020 after the drummer, Neil Peart (aka The Professor) passed away. Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Geddy Lee (bass, keys and vocals) didn’t want to continue without him. It’s almost a prerequisite for Canadians of a certain age to love Rush 😉😄

Tom Sawyer was an protagonist in the book. He was the wildcard always in trouble. The singer was comparing himself to Tom Sawyer. Rebellious and won't align with anyone. The Spacey invasion was upon us back then. Star wars, Star Trek, Lost in Space, David Bowie with his Ground Control to Major Tom and Billy Thorpe with Children of the Sun. Rush jumped right in the mainstream and did their thing. The singer for Rush was a perfectionist who was seen throughout his career railing inept Roadies and their drummer is considered 2nd best drummer of all time behind Keith Moon. Neil Pert was truly an amazing drummer. Billy Thorpe who performed Children of the Sun died to soon . That song is bad ass.

I've gotta ask for sources on your assertations regarding Geddy's relationship with roadies (I am a life-long Rush fan and have NEVER heard any issues with this. In fact, quite the opposite.) As far as your opinion that Moon is better than Peart, that is really debatable and certainly not a certainty as you present it. Moon was wild and thunderous and certainly not afraid to take risks while Peart was meticulously clean, savvy, and deeply learned. They both belong in the top 5 of greatest rock drummer of all time, but more often than not, Peart is listed above Moon as his actually drumming abilities exceeded Moon's.

Your "Pie Dubious" was actually Pye Dubois (pronounced Doo-BWAH), who cowrote this song with Neil Peart, the drummer. Also, "prog" is short for "progressive rock." The video was shot at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, Canada, where this and many of their other great albums were recorded. It is sadly no more, and last I heard, the grounds are being prepped for the building of a new lakeside residential complex. And it's just Rush, not "the Rush." But as was said before, welcome to the Rush Rabbit Hole. It is by far the deepest rabbit hole you'll ever fall into. But I say that with reverence for these 3 irreplaceable music giants.

This song is actually pretty complex musically; it shifts from 4/4 time to 7/8 time at the end of the first keyboard solo, and Neil Peart picks it up flawlessly on the drums. Peart used to say that once he got through this song how it came out indicated how the rest of that day or show's performance was going to go---it was that challenging to him, even after years of playing it.

I saw Rush back in the late 70s. They are one of the most talented and original musicians I've ever heard. 3 members only. They are on my permanent Playlist.

Keep going man. Once you get hooked you will never go back. Three men in one band who sound like 6!

Welcome to Rush! Neil Peart is one of the great lyricists of all time, and probably the greatest percussionist of all time. This is a trio, and each of them have phenomenal capability. Geddy Lee is the vocalist, bassist, and does synths. Alex Lifeson is on guitar. Tom Sawyer is a classic piece of theirs. This is drawing parallels between Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and the symbolism in it, and the restless young romantic kid and his adventures in coming of age. All of Rush's songs have layered lyrical meanings. Other songs you may like of theirs: YYZ for the percussion solo (named after the YYZ airport, and the morse-code call sign for the airport is displayed prominently in the song) Fly by Night - Neil's reflections when leaving home Spirit of the Radio Working Man (pre-Neil Peart) Freewill Limelight The Red Barchetta I'm partial to their work from '74 to '82, but there are some other gems in there.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind, from 1977. Great movie from that era. The ship attempted to communicate with us by using tones and lights. I recommend watching, even with the primitive special effects.

Ok. That was a 3 piece band you just heard. Oh, and arguably, the best drummer that ever lived. Rip Neil Peart.

Always blows my mind, these three guys making that sound. Geddy Lee sings, plays keys and bass. Love this song. So many amazing hits! Prof is short for progressive, a genre of music.

you can never go wrong with Rush. i grew up on them because we live really close to Canada here in NY and my mom was a fan so they’re part of some of my earliest memories. Three of the best to ever touch an instrument or a pen, no contest.
